Fruits with nuts?? (WAS: Adrenal Fatigue)

Hi Belinda,

Yes, the body digests the fruits alone fairly quickly, the nuts alone very

slowly. The combination runs more or less at the speed of the nuts, and the

fruits sit far longer than they would going through the digestive tube

alone.

As for the hunger, it seems likely that you are not eating enough fruits.

The nuts pack a LOT of calories ... largely as fat. Would you be willing

simply to eat a second meal of fruit when you become hungry? That can work

well for transitioning.

I suggest that you read my posts, in the archive, on transitioning, if you

wish.

Best,

Elchanan

[Raw Food] Re: Adrenal Fatigue (Joe P) (WAS: Fruit and Insulin)

Is this why we are not suppose to eat nuts with our fruit? Which is

something I do every morning. A big bowl of fruit with some pecans or

almonds or walnuts and flaxseed meal. It seems without the nuts, I am

hungry again in a very short time. Maybe I should just eat the fruit and

then eat the nuts later when I get hungry.

Sure, I will give it a try.

Or perhaps a green smoothie between my fruit breakfast and lunch?

Right now it is very hot here in TN and those cold lettuce and fruit

smoothies are wonderful. Since eating those, I don't even miss the

ice cream any more. I have a pint jar of smoothie every night for

dinner. Sometimes more than a pint if I feel like it.

When is the best time to eat the nuts?

-Hi Belinda,

I only have a blender-not a vitamix.

it works out just fine when i make smoothies with soy milk/yogurt &

greens & fruit

I don't want to haveto add plain water-so I was wondering before I

waste fruit would it work in anordinairy blender.

I'm startingthis 100% on monday

So I'm also thinking that I should have the nuts & seeds at seperate

times??

Also I don't want to graze all day...but I guess I will have to?

thanks :-)

Yes, all I have is just a plain ole blender. I do use distilled

water, just enough for processing. The bananas and mangos will make

the smoothie, very creamy.

I would like to find a bigger blender though. I make quite a bit of

smoothies when I make them. My blender is just 5 cups, I think. Do

they make them any bigger?

Not looking for anything as pricey as a vitamix.

Hi Belinda,

Well, it depends what's in the green smoothie. My primary goal is to have

you consume more calories (fuel) at that time of day, as opposed to more

bulk. So if the smoothie is high in fruits ....

Ice cream ... consider making your own. Just freeze some bananas (peeled :),

then when you want the ice cream, set them out for about 15 minutes to

soften slightly, then into the food processor they go. You can add other

frozen fruits, such as strawberries and the like. I suggest beginning with

just the bananas, to explore your own sense of taste more fully and

accurately.

As for when to eat the nuts, next year would be my first choice. That

notwithstanding, I generally suggest that people associate any high-fat

foods with their last meal of the day, such as a nice salad. So you could

take my suggestion (many posts ago) of dividing dinner into two submeals.

Part 1 is fruit, then wait awhile, then Part 2, salad. This part gets the

high-fat foods, if any.

Best,

Elchanan

My green smoothies just has lettuces, spinach and fruit, distilled

water. Maybe, half or more is fruit. I have been trying to increase

the greens and less fruit (so I will get more greens), but it just

does not taste as good nor as satisfying.

Though smoothies are rather time consuming, they are so handy. I

make up several jars and put in the fridge. It is sort of my " fast

food " . They also encourage my " fast food " daughter to eat SOMETHING

healthy. She likes them too.

Hi Belinda,

Sounds like you might enjoy adding fruit to your smoothies. You can do this

without reducing the amount of greens, since you say that is a goal. Yes?

BTW, fruit smoothies are not time consuming at all! :) Just a thought ...

Please excuse my lack of clarity. I meant, increase the amount of fruit you

already incorporate into your smoothies. Sorry ...

But if I need more greens, shouldn't I put more greens in it?

About all the greens I eat, is a salad at lunch and what greens are

Hi Belinda,

We're talking apples and oranges to one another (sorry, couldn't resist ...

well, COULD have, but the little boy inside (the " inner child " for the more

sophisticated) just had to say it anyway. HAD to!!!

1. As I recall, you commented that a smoothie without nuts would not be

" filling " , that you might wish to eat fairly soon afterward. I suggested

that you might simply need more calories (fuel) and that you add more fruit

to achieve this.

2. You also wish to increase your consumption of greens, and so yes, you

could add more greens, have a second smoothie later on, or ... my personal

favorite ... begin eating a LARGE evening salad. When to eat the evening

salad? Why, during the evening, of course! (I appear to have become

moderately deranged, perhaps it's the heat.)

Anyway, both goals seem constructive ... more fuel in the AM, more greens

overall. Does this help a bit?

Yes it does, thanks

And I guess that is salad with no dressing, huh.

just the bananas, to explore your own sense of taste more fully and

accurately.

Do frozen bananas taste that much different to fresh raw bananas? (I know

cooked ones do) If so, is it because the cell walls are destroyed during the

freezing process (expanding water turning to ice, and so on), or..?

How long would you suggest waiting between the fruit, and the salad with

fats (eg avocado)? I ask this because I've had salad for dinner at my

parents' place three times now, and each time I've ended up with a belly

ache. The first time I'd eaten fruit (apples) shortly before, then a plate

of lettuce, cucumber, and a small avocado; the second time I'd had fruits

for breakfast, the salad was a late lunch, and was a mixed bag of lettuce

(organic), nearly a whole cucumber, and some almonds; the third time was 2

tiny lettuces (hydroponic), half a cucumber and an avocado, about half an

hour after some bananas.

Last night I sat down with my organic iceberg lettuce (about a pound, I

weighed it after cutting out the core, which tastes bitter to me, and

washing it), and ate it leaf by leaf, on its own. It tasted great, but I

could only eat half of it - I stopped when I felt I'd had enough, no change

in taste, just a feeling of not needing to eat more. I had a few little

burps, but no discomfort, and didn't feel a need to eat again afterwards,

for about 3 hours, then started getting a bit of pain in my belly, what I'd

normally call hunger pangs. I drank some water, which helped a bit, and I

didn't actually feel hungry, just a bit blah, so I went to bed. Any thoughts

or suggestions on that experience?

Yes to an extent (though not remotely as with cooked bananas), but most

people love them!

Oh, half-hour to an hour. If your digestive system is really wrecked at the

moment, then somewhat longer. There is not a magic number, as the interval

may vary with your mood, rest, activity, type of fruit eaten, etc. Too many

details to respond to each instance. Look for a commonality among all the

organic/clean?

re frozen bananas

>Yes to an extent (though not remotely as with cooked bananas), but most

people love them!

Will try it when summer hits :o)

re time between meals:

>Oh, half-hour to an hour. If your digestive system is really wrecked at the

moment, then somewhat longer. There is not a magic number, as the interval

may vary with your mood, rest, activity, type of fruit eaten, etc. Too many

The cucumbers were from my organic guy, as was the bag of mixed lettuces,

one lettuce from the supermarket (so loaded with toxins), the hydroponic

ones from the local fruit shop. I'm planning to get lettuces from my organic

guy from now on, they're much nicer. I don't think I need the avocados at

the moment though - they do taste good, but I can do without the bellyache.
