Guest guest
Diana, There is a lot of information about iron (and all the other nutrients, including B12), what influences the rate of absorbtion, a list of the iron contents of foods and such, at : http://www.vnv.org.au/Nutrients.htm I can't help with a Sustagen type product, but to boost my sons nutrient intake I rely on quite a bit on smoothies (probably not as convenient though). He is 13 and has never been able to eat much for breakfast and thus is hungry and wilting by the time school starts. So in the morning (and often after school) I give him I give him a smoothy containing one whole banana (and sometimes some strawberries as well), a small soy yoghurt, carob, a little honey and some soy milk (fortified). It can be further fortified by adding some soy milk powder (fortified as well)( there is a really nice one that comes in a blue box but I can't remember the brand). Guest guest
The best advice I have for low carbs is to avoid the junk carbs. Stay away from white bread and rice--substitute whole wheat and brown rice. Don't have presweetened cereal, have oatmeal instead. Cut out the high sugar foods. I don't have any great suggestions here for substitutes--maybe fruit. What I try to do is stick to quality carbs that provide fiber and some food value and keep away from refined flours and sugars. Guest guest
I hope all of us are trying to do as you say ;=) I can't remember the last time I had white bread or white rice - perhaps the rice when we ate out at a Thai veggie restaurant? But at home, we don't even have any in. There are also some excellent cooked whole-grain cereals if oatmeal doesn't suit (some people have unfortunate childhood memories of it *lol*). Frankly, I don't know why people have to work so hard to wean themselves off what you call the junk carbs - they have no taste anyway! You kinda have to go easy on the fruit, though, for weightloss - those calories add up awfully fast if you have a good appetite!!! ;=) Thanks for posting that. It's always good to be reminded. Best, Pat ;=) , Hilary H Merola <mokad@j...> wrote: > The best advice I have for low carbs is to avoid the junk carbs. Guest guest
Well, you have to include refined sugar in the " junk carbs, " and that includes stuff like donuts, cookies, etc....doesn't lack taste to my taste buds! - veggiehound <veggiehound Wed, 07 Jul 2004 20:11:18 -0000 Re: help? vegetarianslimming Frankly, I don't know why people have to work so hard to wean themselves off what you call the junk carbs - they have no taste anyway! Well, that's my excuse *lol*. And in the savoury stuff, I mustn't forget things like BBQ- flavour cornchips - not exactly tasteless either <blush> gf
Guest guest
Whoops...didn't know about the diabetes...sorry! Yes, I agree about the others...white bread especially...I almost find it revolting! Yes, but not mine. the person who originally posted on this topic had been diagnosed with pre-diabetes . . . >Yes, I agree about > the others...white bread especially...I almost find it revolting! > Well, depending... Well, if things taste of nothing then I suppose one can always make them taste of something? But I figure it's still a good rule of thumb (who said that?) to avoid the refined foodstuffs as much as possible - and go for the whole foods. Better for our *health* as well as our *slimming* *lol* Best, Pat ;=)

Guest guest
Hi everyone! I am needing some help! I was on raw foods for 3 years, 100% raw about 95% of the time and then I decided to try bringing cooked foods into our house because I was overwhelmed with constantly making raw food for my kids and wanted the convenience of packaged foods. I am a single Mom and just don't have the time and energy to prepare foods all the time! For me, I don't need to prepare much, I was happy with fruit and salads and almond milk with only an occasinal raw prepared gourmet meal or dessert etc... but my kids needed lots of prepared raw stuff and I just didn't have the energy or desire to keep up with it. Having the cooked food around for my kids was too much for me to resist and I started eating more and more. Then I actually started having a social life and going out to eat and... well it added up and I am now only about 20-30% raw. I feel awful and I hate it but I just can't seem to resist the food. I am going through a lot of changes: first a divorce (we split a year ago), my kids who have been homeschooled will be going to school in a month and I'm working part time after being an at-home Mom for 10 years and will be looking for full time work as soon as the kids start school, and I am dating (which is wonderful but takes up a lot of time!) The wonderful woman whom I am dating is interested in eating raw foods and I just can't seem to bring myself to make anything except for salads and green smoothies! I don't know what is going on with me and I need help!!! I used to love to prepare raw foods, I don't know what's happened to me! Anyone have any ideas, words of wisdom or just empathy for me? I am feeling really depressed about this! Thanks! Denise Thomas
Guest guest
Good morning, Denise! My first question would be, do your kids _need_ prepared foods or _want_ prepared foods? It's natural for you to progress to the point that you, personally, want simpler foods. The kids should eventually get to the same place if you allow them to. What are their favorite fruits? All blessings to you! Tommie http://reallyrawfood.com http://reallyrawfood.com/forum rawfood , " denisedthomas " <denised> wrote: > > Hi everyone! > > I am needing some help!
