I use agave all the time. It just tastes sweet. I have it in a liquid like

honey and just add it to my coffee like i would add honey. It's runnier than

honey and doesnt have a honey taste....its just...sweet.

Hi Pat,

I¹m definitely not paranoid about everything I put in my mouth. But I don¹t

know much about agave so I found the article interesting and thought others

might, too. Personally I don¹t use much sweetener of any kind ‹ I don¹t

really have a sweet tooth, thankfully.

Oh me too LOL Wasn't meaning you - just that we shouldn't be that way in general

;)

Agreed. It tastes rather nice, actually - in small quantities.

Lucky you! It comes and goes with me - I like to sweeten black tea a little - I

use stevia - but I don't have tea every day by any means. Other things rarely

need sweetening, I find. It's difficult for those who do have a sweet tooth

though - hence my suggesting that there are ways of kicking the habit. Ya know?

Thanks for writing in. Good to get these things sorted out, I think.

Love, Pat

There is a difference between the way that fructose is processed by

the body and the way that glucose is processed by the body. Glucose

can be dumped directly to the bloodstream and used as is. Fructose

needs to be processed by the liver, and it requires glucose in order

to be processed. If you give the body too much fructose to process

(and of course, how much fructose that is will vary from one person to

the next) then the body will pull glucose from the blood into the

liver in order to process it. That can result in hypoglycemia.

Scientists use high-fructose corn syrup to trigger hypoglycemia in

rats. Having to process a lot of fructose can also lead to fatty

liver and other problems.

Agave is highly promoted as a perfect sweetener for diabetics, but

remember that triggering hypoglycemia is as dangerous, if not more so,

than high blood sugar.

Some people can be intolerant of or highly sensitive to fructose. My

father and I both have mild fructose intolerance, and high-fructose

fruits are a problem for us. I can have the occasional apple without

it dropping my blood sugar too much. Lower fructose fruits are fine.

My dad can have about one low-fructose fruit a week without migraines.

For him, agave is out, maple syrup is out, honey is out. I can use

them occasionally without a problem.

Most people won't have any idea if they are sensitive to fructose.

Doctors don't look for it. The only medical cases that they know of

are the life-threatening ones, but they are not the only ones that

exist.
