Guest guest
Fraggle, the first DH was from Northern Italy and that is the land of beef and dairy and lots of veggies. The current DH's family is from Naples and Sicily. Southern Italy is the land of lots of pork and fish and different types of veggies than they seem to grow in Northern Italy. The Noni I learned to cook from was from Northern Italy. She cooked with more veggies than the current DH's family used. Guest guest
That is what I loved about spending time with my grandfather and the uncles and aunties. Uncle Billy was born in the 1850s and remembered the night of the Indian Island Massacre. My Grampa was born in the 1860s and ran a tramp steamer up to the Alaska gold fields. Noni (Ginoveffa Olivastri was her maiden name) came over from Tuscany and would tell us stories of when she was a little girl in Italy. Some of the places they would go, some of the architecture they would see. And when I was younger we used to go to Frediani's on Monday's when they were closed. That was the day Mama Frediani made all the sauces and homemade raviolis. She used to bring in her photo albums and sit me up on one of the big counters and I loved going through all the pictures from her home in Italy! And the Aliotos in SF. The old folks, not the " kids " that are running stuff now. Peter Aliotos isn't there anymore but he had furniture shipped over from one of the old castles up on the Swiss/Italian border and his restaurant was to die for! We worked on the living history project and went around video taping and audio taping the elders and it was so interesting! I love history! Guest guest
I'm a bit biased having grown up in Rome and having spent all my holidays in Sicily, which is where my mom is from, but I think that southern Italy is far less touristic (for want of a better word) than northern Italy. Finding vegetarian stuff is not difficult in Sicily and vegan is possible if you manage to explain about the no egg and dairy thing (some people just don't get it, at all :-). As far as the wine is concerned, some restaurants migh make their own or know the people they buy the wine from so you could ask them about the process and what they use. On the minus side, far fewer people will speak English compared to somewhere like Tuscany. Yet, that's just a good reason to freshen up your Italian or, if your family is from there, your Sicilian, which is almost like another language! Guest guest
I was in Italy in 2005...I am not sure if anything like that exists. Things are still fairly authentic there, pasta, bread, cheese, fish....so eating will be challenging. Let me know if you come across anything in your travels. Have a great time, it is a beautiful country! Guest guest
Dear Roy, I have read that GF food in Italy is readily available. Some is dispensed through the pharmacies and available to Italians through prescription. I assume foreigners can purchase that food. The incidence of CD/gluten intolerance is very high in Italy and waiters in the larger eating establishments seem to be quite knowledgeable. It was suggested that you take a dining card, written in Italian and specifying your dietary needs, with you. I would imagine there is some type of Celiac Society and/or support group available also. You might find a contact person through Google. We traveled in Italy years ago... before the words gluten-free and celiac were part of our vocabulary and it's a beautiful country. Hope you have a good trip. Fran fsunburst1969 <hawkegroup wrote: I'm going to Italy in March. Does anybody have information on GF restaurants/food supplies in Rome and Sorrento/Amalfi Coast areas? Guest guest
Hi Roy, Regarding finding certain food information for your March trip to Italy... You might log on to the Italian Celiac Society's website at www.celiachia.it The info is written in Italian but if you click on the flag on the lower right side of the screen, the info will come up in English. Hope this is helpful. Fran fsunburst1969 <hawkegroup wrote: I'm going to Italy in March. Does anybody have information on GF restaurants/food supplies in Rome and Sorrento/Amalfi Coast areas?
