I'm craving a BLT, what can I use instead of bacon?

Lettuce and tomato on bread is just not going to cut it. LOL I was

thinking temphe, but the good smokey temphe has gluten so that's out.

I really don't want just plain temphe on it. Any other ideas?

I don't know if you can have tofu, but if you can, maybe marinate some tofu

slices in wheat free tamari and cook that to add to your L & T?

Hi Shannon,

 

We have this recipe in our Files ( " Mains " folder, " Mock Meats " ):

 

 

 

Makin' Vegan Bakon

 

 

1/2 cup GF soy sauce

1 Tbsp (3 tsp) nutritional (savoury) yeast flakes

1 Tbsp (3 tsp) maple syrup

1/2 Tbsp (1 1/2 tsp) GF liquid smoke

1/2 lb (225 g) extra-firm tofu

1 tsp of freshly ground pepper or whole pepper corns,

*for extra spicy use 2 tsp or some hot sauce such as tabasco

 

 

Mix the soy sauce, yeast flakes, maple syrup, and liquid smoke

together in a flat container. With a cheese slicer, shave the tofu

into very thin slices.

Marinate the tofu in the soy sauce mixture for at least 24 hours.

 

To cook, heat a lightly olive oiled, heavy skillet (iron is the best)

medium-high heat. When the pan is hot, fry the tofu slices until they

are golden-brown and almost crispy on both sides, scraping underneath

the slices as you turn them with a sturdy spatula. Turn several times

during cooking after you remove from hot pan and are draining oil off

then put your pepper or peppercorns on the bacon for that spicy

peppered bacon taste.

If you can't have tofu or soy.... I suggest using eggplant. It is similar

to tofu in that it picks up the flavors of surrounding foods and can be

marinated. It's very good roasted too. I'd put roasted peppers in too.

Dulse works well. Pan fry or bake at 300 for 3 to 4 minutes until it is

crisp.
