Guest guest
My in laws are Chinese, they say the Chinese vegans don't use garlic because of it's antibacterial properties. I never heard such a thing. Does anyone know about this? Thanks in advance Charleen 8:00? 8:25? 8:40? Find a flick in no time with the Search movie showtime shortcut. Guest guest
I think that explanation may be coming from confusion between two separate issues. As I understand it, garlic does indeed have anti-bacterial agents but that is a good thing. Some Bhuddists however (many of whom are Chinese) avoid garlic AND onions because they are believed to inflame the " passions " (anger, greed, lust, etc). They do this to make it easier to attain and maintain the state of calm peacefulness that is prized above all else. Guest guest
I understood it was because buddhists do nothing which would intentionally cause another organism death and the antibacterial properties of garlic would be intentionally doing that. Guest guest
well, if you were to try and take that stance you would not be able to drive or ride in a car or walk without first sweeping your path. I try to live my life as a vegan while embracing the mantra " all i can do is do all i can. " and i thought is was the janists (sp) who lived that strictly. Guest guest
Could be mk, I was just offering what had been explained to me in response to another person's query about garlic. I believe we have access to all the herbs (or seed bearing plants) for our medicine and our food scripturally. Guest guest
Some do - sweep their paths. And some have others do the tasks that need doing that involve killing (morally or ethically, they seem the same to me - kind of lik the difference between murdering your wife and hiring it done). Of course, simply eating something pretty much kills the bacteria - that is one of the primary purposes of stomach acid. > > > well, if you were to try and take that stance you would not > be able to drive or ride in a car or walk without first > sweeping your path. Guest guest
I have been vegan for thirteen years. I use garlic BECAUSE of the antibacterial properties and the many other health benefits! The Egyptians not only worshipped garlic, but fed it to their slaves to keep them healthy. They not only ate it but also used it for embalming purposes. Roman soldiers believed that garlic inspired courage, they actually dedicated the plant to their so called god of war. It was used in the wars as an antibiotic and antiseptic to disinfect wounds and prevent gangrene. The Soviet army relied so heavily on garlic during the war that they called it " Russian penicillin " Garlic is a very helpful remedy for many reasons, some are as follows - stimulates the immune system - antioxidant - extremely helpful in cases of asthma and hay fever - high in iodine, sulphur, and selenium - used to treat high blood pressure - aids in digestion - Treats ear infectins - helps prevent heart disease and cancer - helps fight against fungus and ringworm the list goes on and on. Needless to say we love eating GARLIC! -Gail
Guest guest
Great Gail, and I agree with you. Sadly my system does not as I am allergic to garlic and it's cousins. Even the smell of something cooking in the neighbour's apartment and I have a major migraine for days. I used to love the stuff and made all sorts of things with it for treating the children's ailments (even oil for treating otitis). Anyway, you are fortunate to be able to make use of it.
