Guest guest
Hi, My 8 year old celiac daughter is recovering from a 2 week bout w/ influenza and has lost 16 pounds (1/4 her original body weight). We want to pack some pounds back on her so I am looking for the most calorie laden foods I can find w/o resorting to Ensure (a name brand product designed for nutrition/calories, but the ingredient list is scary). Does anyone have any ideas or experience? She's getting her appetite back, slowly, but is only interested in fresh produce and fruits..nothing that will help her to gain weight. Thanks in advance. Guest guest
A lady I know has gained weight using homemade almond milk as a base for smoothies. If you soak almonds (or cashews) over night in water, to soften them.. then grind them up with water in the blender, it works really well. There's more calories if you leave the bits in, but if she's picky you can also strain it. Adding banana, some ground flax seed, spinach and berries will give her a fair amount of nutrients to go along with the nuts. Here are some suggestions. Her site is only found via the wayback machine now. http://web.archive.org/web/20041019101517/www.howigainedweight.com/tips.html Good luck! Guest guest
No experience (unless you count gaining weight over the holidays ...) I would suggest higher fat plant-based foods, like olives, nuts, seeds, avocado, tofu, and coconut milk. If she doesn't want them by themselves they can be put on other foods -- chopped nuts on fruit, pepitas in salads, tofu chunks in her veggies (maybe some of those flavored, baked varieties -- firmer and not as mushy), etc. That much weight loss in 2 weeks probably includes quite a bit of water weight that came off. So hopefully with plenty of fluids and high fat foods that weight will come back before you know it. I think you are right to be reluctant to resort to Ensure. I looked at the ingredient lists for different versions -- full of oils, sugar, isolated soy protein, etc. Not real food. Good luck, DianeR
Guest guest
Avocado is pretty high in calories. And how about hummus on celery? I'll try to think of more. Guest guest
Thanks for the advice and the website. We had a lovely snowstorm last night so we’re off school today and my daughter is eating small meals every few hours. I made her a shake last night using bits of the suggestions. So, if you want to gain weight, here’s what we started with: Jasmine’s Gain Weight Shake :-) ½ cup Soy Delicious Chocolate ice cream ½ cup Chocolate Silk Milk 3 TBS almond butter ½ TBS coconut oil By my calculation, this has 430 calories in it and is very kid-friendly. It made enough for one small tummy serving. Lisa in Missouri
Guest guest
Lisa Alton Brown had an avocado ice cream on one of his shows. We made it using coconut milk and it was surprisingly good. You could use something like that as well. BL On 2/1/07, Lisa Watson <lisawatson wrote: > > Thanks for the advice and the website. Guest guest
Sounds yummy. I'd throw a banana in there too (probably instead of the coconut oil; I'm not convinced of its healthfulness, but don't want to debate it, lol). -Erin www.zenpawn.com/vegblog , " Lisa Watson " <lisawatson wrote: > > Thanks for the advice and the website.
