Guest guest
Good morning! I am wondering if any of you have found a tasty morning beverage that you could share. I'm realizing I drink WAY too much coffee! I've given it up successfully in the past, but replaced it with Postum, Inca, etc., which are roasted chickory and barley. Now that I'm gluten-free, those are no longer options. I do like teas, but that's more of a night-time beverage for me. Any good bold-flavored roasted beverage ideas? Thanks so much in advance. -Mary ______________________________\ ____ Looking for earth-friendly autos? Guest guest
I drink teeccino. They have had there product tested, and when it is brewed there is no gluten in it, even though there is Barely. They have a whole thing on it on there website. www.teeccino.com They even say on there packageing, " Brewed teeccino is glutne-free. " They have many different flavors, we all love them. The ingredients on the mocha are: roasted carob, barley, chicory root, dates, almonds, natural mocha flavor, figs and cocoa. They claim a lot of healthy benifits from there product. Neither of my family members who have celiac have had any problems with it. Amy

Guest guest
Although it is a tea, I enjoy Matcha green tea. It is in powder form and it actually tastes nothing like green tea. It is " thicker " more fulfilling beverage for morning drink. And, it is really high in antioxidant. It is kind of expensive so if you can find it in bulk, that is the best way to buy it. Guest guest
How can either of these be acceptable for people who must avoid gluten when they both contain barley and/or rye?? Deborah Here are the answers from the websites: Celiacs and gluten intolerant Dandy Blend is gluten-free, according to tests conducted by Elisa Technologies Laboratory .The process by which all the extracts are made uses only water, and gluten is not water soluble, so it stays behind.. What you get is all the nutrition from the barley and rye, but none of starch or gluten Does Teeccino contain any gluten? " Although Teeccino contains barley, an independent laboratory at the University of Nebraska that specializes in gluten testing found no detectable levels of gluten in Teeccino. Althought gluten is present in barley, it most likely does not extract out of the barley using conventional coffee brewing techniques. Gluten is not extracted by boiling water although it can be extracted using ethanol alcohol, which of course is not present in Teeccino. Click Here to see Gluten testing results. Guest guest
I just checked in Gluten-Free Diet by Shelley Case, which I should have done before posting before. She says coffee substitutes are foods to question. Roasted chicory is the most common coffee substitute and is GF. Others are derived from gluten-containing grains. Guest guest
I love to order tea from Upton Tea Company http://www.uptontea.com/shopcart/home.asp They certainly have matcha (I've never tried it but now you've got me curious). I like the Baker street blend for a really hearty, smoky black tea. Can't imagine having it at night time! It's hard to give up coffee, isn't it! It make my tummy hurt, so I drink it very seldom now--once in a while when I've been pain free for a long time I risk a cup. I really miss it. (I don't risk gluten...) Guest guest
There is a tea called Roastorama, something like that, by one of the mainstram tea companies. It is a dark tea, with that roasted flavor. It is caffeine free. Add a little milk and sweetener if you like, and it might satisfy your morning taste buds. Guest guest
There is NO test commercially available that detects the proteins in barley in a drink (there are some very expensive tests that are done in research labs that do protein separation, but no food manufacturer uses them). The ELISA test they no doubt used only looks for the protein in wheat. Not having it in a barley drink does not mean it contained no gluten. Their claim is easy - there being no legal standard, they can claim it for anything they want (at least in the US - barley can't be labeled as GF under any circumstances in some countries and with others the testing is quite expensive and very little actually qualifies -- even barley malt has been removed from the " safe " list in the UK and it would have much smaller amounts of protein than this drink, especially at the low levels used in cereals). > > I drink teeccino. Guest guest
That one is rye and barley based. Just because an ELISA test (which they mis-spell on the web site) detects no wheat gliadin does not make it gluten free. > > Another option I just heard about is Dandy Blend. > www.dandyblend.com

Even if you believed there was no gluten in the tea it makes -- it is very high in the grounds themselves. Anyone that has played with coffee out of a pod knows that they don't stay neatly in the container, so every bit of it will be a gluten hazard in your kitchen (and on you hand after handling it, on your kitchen wipe/sponge after wiping down, etc). Guest guest
Hello Mary; I too used to drink a lot of coffee! I worked in an office, and when I worked at my desk I could smoke and drink as much as I wanted as long as it didn't interfere with my clients (if they smoked it made it easier for me too.) Smoking and drinking seemed to go hand in hand. I remember drinking coffee that was sooooo black that I thought my spoon would dissolve in my cup. Yuck! Then, I quit smoking, hooray! Then I became pregnant with twins. I didn't want them to be coffee addicts or alcoholics so I quit for their sake. My husband's grandfather was a very dear man. When we went to visit him, he would offer us a cup of hot, or warm water instead of coffee. At first we thought, yuck, who could drink just plain hot water. Guess what! The first thing we do each morning now is reach for the kettle and pour a couple of cups of hot water for each of us. Then we chase it down with a pinch of celtic sea salt. (It really helps to rehydrate our bodies too!) To me, it's very refreshing, especially knowing that my body is now getting what it needs and not what it used to crave. I have never craved coffee since. Now I drink warm or hot water or herbal teas and I am totally satisfied! Praise the Lord! ~Gail , " fullcirclea " <fullcirclea wrote: > > , Mary Williams-Pepin > <calimaryvegan@> wrote: > > > > .
