Guest guest
Hello to all. The one dilemma I have is my thyroid medication. I have had thyroid problems since I was 16 years old, and despite all of the medications, we could never get it well controlled. About 3 years ago, my doctor switched me from synthetic thyroid, which never worked, to Armour Thyroid, which worked brilliantly. Until I became a veggie, I never thought much about medications. Recently, I learned that Armour thyroid is made by the same company that makes Armour Hotdogs!!! That means my medication contains the pigs gland from all of those horribly treated animals from a factory farm, and would contain all of the growth hormones, antibiotics, and steroids the same way the meat would. I am really distressed about this. Has anyone found a better solution, or dealt with the same issue? Thanks for any advice. Brenda

Guest guest
Here is a list of the common thyroid meds....you may have to do some research to see which ones would be right for your condition AND which are at the very least cruelty-free or best case ones that are truly vegan. Armour Thyroid – Manufactured by Forest Pharmaceuticals Forest Pharmaceuticals Armour is a Nature Thyroid product made from porcine (pig) thyroids. It has both t4 and t3 but in a natural form. Armour Naturethroid - Manufactured by Western Research Laboratories Western Research Labs Naturethroid is natural thyroid that is derived from fresh and promptly frozen porcine glands (Pig). Naturethroid has both t4 and t3. Naturethroid is made with microcrystalline cellulose to make it hypoallergenic. Westhroid - Manufactured by Western Research Laboratories Western Research Labs Westhroid is natural thyroid that is derived from fresh and promptly frozen porcine glands (Pig). Westhroid has both t3 and t4. Westhroid is made with cornstarch which makes it different from Naturethroid. Cytomel - Manufactured by King Pharmaceuticals. Cytomel is synthetic t3 only. Cytomel Levothroid - Manufactured by Forest Pharmaceuticals. Levothroid is made of a synthetic t4 (levothyroxine)Levothroid Levoxyl - Manufactured by King Pharmaceuticals .Levoxyl is made of synthetic t4 (levothyroxine)Levoxyl Synthroid - Manufactured by Abbott Laboratories. Synthroid is a synthetic t4 (levothyroxine)Synthroid Thyrogen - Manufactured by Genzyme Corporation. Thyrogen is used in Thyroid Cancer patients. Thyrogen Thyrolar - Manufactured by Forest Pharmaceuticals Thyrolar is a t4 and t3 synthetic product. In the same ratios as Armour Thyroid but synthetic. Thyrolar Unithroid - Manufactured by Jerome Stevens Pharmaceuticals. Unithroid is a t4 synthetic product. (levothyroxine) Tapazole - Manufactured by King Pharmaceuticals. Tapazole is used for patients with hyperthyroidism. Tapazole since you are doing so well on the Armour stuff...my thought is that you need t3 and t4....I am of course just guessing...I'm not your dr...nor am I a doctor...(yet..but working for it!).... Other courses of action besides asking your dr for suggestions would be drop a line to PETA....or call your pharmacist....they have a tendency to know tons of facts and figures about medications..especially ones for fairly common disorders.. and GOOD LUCK!!.. Guest guest
I have wondered this myself. I have a hard enough time being regulated on the natural thyroids, I hate to think about going to synthetics (which didn't work for me anyway several years ago!). I really don't know what to do about it either. I try NOT to think about it actually. I have wondered, though, if the natural thyroids are so refined that the " other stuff " has been removed? I am curious to see what kind of replies you get back on this, so I hope people don't respond to you privately..... Lisa Wife to Chuck (13 yrs.) Guest guest
Berrywell: Ask your doctor about prescribing time release, compounded T3 and T4. You'll need access to a compounding pharmacist, which you can find by going to http://www.iacprx.org. Click on " For Patients, Pet Owners " and then on " Find a Compounding Pharmacist Near You. " If your doctor won't use a compounding pharmacist, call one of the pharmacists you find on the above site and ask for names of local health professionals who do a lot of T3/T4 thryoid med prescribing. Then consider visiting one of them instead of or in addition to your doctor. I recently " fired " my MD who used to sneer at naturopaths, and found a new MD who cheerfully works with them. And for another approach to thyroid medicine treatment, take a look at this site http://www.wilsonstemperaturesyndrome.com/ and read the free on-line e-book " Doctor's Manual. " It's a treatment for people with thyroid symptoms, " normal " blood tests, and who consistently have temperatures below 98.6. The goal of a successful Wilson's treatment protocol is to get the patient's temperature reliably staying at 98.6 and weaned completely off thyroid medicine. And here I'd thought that I'd be dependent on increasing dosages of thyroid for the rest of my life. Glad to know that it may not be so.
