Guest guest
I've just heard that most raisins are coated with Canola Oil! Has anyone else any information on this? Canola oil is a prime target for GMO(genetically modified Organisms).Do you suppose they would coat the raisin with an organic Canola oil? ~Gail
Guest guest
Is there such a thing as organic canola oil. Canola is the polite name for rape seed and from what I understand all the canadian groups are sprayed with pesticides. Haven't heard about american crops but I imagine it is the same. Guest guest
I am in the US and you can buy both certified organic canola/rapeseed oil, as well as certified organic raisins...the latter should take care of your concerns.
Guest guest
There is most definitely organic canola oil. My FIL grows it on his farm. I can get it in my local grocery superstore. Guest guest
I do my best to buy only raisins that aren't oiled at all. The ingredients list on the package says if there is oil or not. Generally, I buy in bulk and they seem to be less often oiled than those in smaller packages. The oiling helps keep the raisins from sticking together, the bulk raisins stick together like crazy, but so what? :-) They take a few minutes to separate, but they are worth the time to me. :-) Deborah On 4/24/07, candocook wrote: > > > > I've just heard that most raisins are coated with Canola Oil! I'm too scared of the scoop being used in the bin next to it (oatmeal or something) and then going back in the bin I want. The nutritionist I went to warned me off bulk bins, and now I'm really wondering. They're so much cheaper. Guest guest
Shannon, is there a market near you that has bulk bins, but not ones that people scoop into? I purchase in bulk from the bins that have a handle and the bulk items pour out of a spout at the base of them. I've always considered them pretty 'safe' unless the grocery who fills them messes up. I share your concern on the other type of open, bulk bins. ~ LaDonna ~ >>>Do you find that you get x-contamination issues from bulk bins? Guest guest
Hi Shannon; To clarify, when I referred to buying " bulk " , I meant I get a case of raisins at a time from my organic distributor... I dunno what it weighs, maybe 25 lbs. It comes packed as a unit straight from the vineyard. I wasn't referring to bulk bins in the grocery store, because YES... cross-contamination is a danger with those. ...good point! :-) Deborah Do you find that you get x-contamination issues from bulk bins? Gotcha. I don't know where I'd put 25 lbs of raisins.
