Guest guest
Yesterday I went to a party given in my daughter and new SIL's honor, hosted by my SIL's mom. She made all the food herself, and it looked great! But it was just about all traditional party stuff. The ONLY vegan items were a tossed salad, white flour rolls and Italian bread, and some bruchetta! ARGH! I ended up having the salad and bruchetta as my only food, and eating the white flour breads--causing a HUGE reaction for hours afterwards. VERY frustrating! This same woman is hosting a party next month for my daughter's baby shower. I know I'm going to run into the same problem with food. Can anyone suggest some great vegan/gluten free party foods that " mainstream " people will like, too? I don't want to bring a doggie bag to my own daughter's shower! I will offer to bring or make some foods for next month, and I'll actually be able to eat! PLEASE share your favorite party snack or main dish, mainstream-family-friendly food ideas! Thanks! Guest guest
Of course, the traditional veggie platter or a fruit platter would be great! - sahmomof8 Cc: GFCFPlus Monday, May 28, 2007 8:14 AM Party food ideas needed! Guest guest
When I hosted my neighbor's baby shower about a month ago, I really needed to make some GF Vegan food for my son (and Vegan for us!). So I scrounged the files and found the most tasty and amazing appetizer - Tofu Corn Puffs! They are excellent - although fried. Everyone loved them (even cold) - and no one was even vegetarian. Compliments kept coming left and right. And no one suspected tofu! Another must is the guacamole dip. Very healthy for you - especially if you use flax seed tortilla chips. The veggie tray is also a great idea, too. Most people will go for it out of guilt! Hope that helps a little. Nicole Tofu Corn Puffs Source: Nutrition Workshop guide by. Eriann & Timothy Hullquist 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup cashews, raw 1 cup tofu, mashed 2 Tbsp (6 tsp) onion flakes (I only had onion powder) 2 Tbsp (6 tsp) nutritional (savoury) yeast flakes 2 1/2 tsp chicken-style seasoning 1 tsp onion salt (I used sea salt) 1/4 tsp sweet basil (I used regular basil, about 1/2 tsp) 2 cups whole kernel corn 2 cups GF bread crumbs In a blender, blend the water and cashews together thoroughly. Remove to mixing bowl and add the rest of ingredients. (My Daughter used her hands and mushed this together for about 10 minutes while I was getting other things together. So everything was well blended) Form patties and brown on a medium-low heat frying pan in a little oil for approximately 6 minutes each side. (I made really small patties and fried on medium-high for about 5 minutes each side.) - > PLEASE share your favorite party snack or main dish, > mainstream-family-friendly food ideas! Thanks! Guest guest
I feel your pain. I always " offer to help " and bring two dishes. That way I know I can at least have two options. Some of my favorites that have gone over well: Three bean salad Stuffed mushrooms (this one is in the files) My famous vegetarian chili Five layer bean dip (I omit the dairy) Fruit salad Roasted vegetables and beans (in the files) I sometimes also make my own soy-based dip for chips and veggies. Guest guest
I am curious about what type of jello mold you can make vegan? Do you know of a vegan gelatine? I have used agar agar, but not overly pleased with the results. Real jello would be made from the boiled skins, ligaments and tendons of animals. You have my curiousity up now! I would love a good substitute for gelatine Brenda , " fullcirclea " <fullcirclea wrote: > > , sahmomof8@ wrote: > > > Can anyone suggest > > some great vegan/gluten free party foods that " mainstream " people > will like, too? > > Guacamole w/ corn tortila chips > taboleeh (spelling?) made with quinoa -they wont know the diffrence! > jello mold > rice salad > potato salad -red potatos red onions oil & vinegar salt & pepper >
Guest guest
At a shower this winter I made some little finger foods out of sliced cucumbers lying on a plate. I made a pate out of nuts and veggies and herbs. I scooped some on each cucumber slice using the tiniest ice cream type scoop you can buy. Then I topped each scoop with a little piece of red bell pepper. People loved them. They were so pretty on a pretty plate. Chips and a fresh homemade salsa goes over really well. Guest guest
I actually attended a potluck yesterday where most of the people were Vegan or Vegetarian, so it really opened my eyes to lots of food that is GOOD, and not the typical beans and rice that we've been doing. (I'm fairly new at being a vegetarian, and working my way to vegan... it seemed so hard before the party!) I made Vegan GF Banana Bread. 1 1/4 cups Bob's Red Mill All Purpose GF Flour 1/4 cup flax meal ~ (You could use more flax in place of the GF flour, if you wish.) 1 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda (egg replacer ~ I did the 2 TBS boiling water + 1 TBS flax, set it aside until it got " eggy " , and cooled off, then added it to the mixture.) 3-4 really ripe bananas 1/4 cup applesauce 1/2 tsp real vanilla extract 1 tsp cream of tartar 1 tsp Xanthan gum (optional ~ cinnamon, " pumpkin bread spice " , chopped nuts, dried fruit, etc.) I added some dried cranberries, some ginger and cinnamon... Preheat oven to 350. Mix all wet ingredients, then dry. Pour in bread pan, or muffin tins. I cook mine for 40 minutes before bedtime and turn off the oven, and let it sit in the oven overnight to gently cook the rest of the way. (I have found I need to do this when I use flax rather than egg, and applesauce instead of oil...) Anyway, EVERYONE at the party was asking for the recipe. They had no clue it was good for them I should have made 2 ~ You can use this recipe for pumpkin, squash, strawberries and bananas, carrot muffins, etc. This is what I usually make when we do potlucks. I really like the Bob's GF flour, because it is fairly easy to use in place of " regular " flour... just add some xanthan gum & most things are really good. (I've found it works best with " sweet " recipes... though, I did make a loaf of bread that was dense, but got eaten within a day by my family. Also, Tinkinyada (sp?) rice noodles are great and no one can tell the difference. You could make a healthy macaroni salad with veggies... Also, at the party, they had: *cooked Noodles (you could bring rice noodles) and a few different pasta sauces to choose from *chips and homemade salsa, bean dips, guacamole * a heavenly rice dish... the woman said she used rice, coconut, saffron, raisins... I'm not sure what else, but it was really delish... I am sure you have some of your own recipes that would work here. *raw veggies and fruits * vegan soups ~ this one woman made a soup with coconut milk, chopped tomatoes, braggs liquid aminos (not sure if this is GF), and other veggies... it was yummy. Possibly bring your fave veggie soup.. *organic juices with lemon and lime juice ice cubes for a " fruit punch " What we cook at home that is a big hit: *mashed sweet potatoes (put a tiny bit of salt, pepper, vegan " margarine " , and milk substitute ~ we like almond or hazlenut milk.) ~ Sometimes instead of pepper, I use cinnamon and a little squirt of Agave Nectar. * stir fry with brown rice * cooked with onions, garlic, colorful bell peppers, cumin, corn, salt, pepper with black beans... when it cools off you can mix guacamole on it... my kids munch on this like it's no one's business... we also use it for " dip " ... it's also good to mix salsa into it. (It is also really good with cool, canned, rinsed, kidney beans) * Dr Oeteker's Puddings are great (and gluten/dairy free). My kids LOVE the chocolate one, made with nut milks... really good as frozen popcicles, too. (They taste a LOT like Jello Pudding Pops) Anyway, you get the idea... maybe pick your favorite meal, and bring it with a snack? That way, even if everything is gluteny & meat/cheese/egg filled, you still have something good to satisfy you. Hope that helped.
