Hello, I'm a new member and seeking advice about my IBS. I have been

changing my diet over the past months as I found that I am intolerant

to wheat and gluten. I also changed to a vegetarian diet and found that

this helped my condition tremendously. I have always favoured a more

vegetarain life stlye and have been enjoying this.

My last Homeopath suggested I give up Coffee! I love my daily coffee,

and find this very hard to do without. I actually find a cup of coffee

gets me going in the morning in more ways than waking me up. It wakes

up my bowel as well. Can anyone tell me why the coffee could be a bad

trigger?

I suffer from a lot of headaches and no one can tell me why and what

causes them. I try to stick to my gluten free diet. But, still I suffer

with IBS symptoms. When will this ever end. Has anyone found a solution

to this problem yet?

Very frustrated.

Alison.

Alison, food allergies were causing my headaches. I got an IgG blood

test and have cut out the positive foods, and my headaches are just

gone--miraculously gone. I had a daily headache and haven't had one

in three weeks now.

From what I understand, acidic foods may exacerbate IBS. My doctor

had told me I had " a touch of IBS " in addition to interstitial

cystitis, and giving up vinegar, acidic drinks (carbonated as well as

caffeinated), and other acidic foods made a huge difference for me.

Here's a couple of other people's stories about how they used low-fat vegan diet

against IBS. Good luck!

Welcome Alison,

From what I understand, caffeine is a stimulant and probably is causing the

bowel to wake up.

You might try decaf -- I'm sure it is all in my mind, but the decaf coffee gets

my body moving in the morning.

Good luck,

Barbara

Hi Alison,

Well, my migraines went away with a gf diet. It might be something else for

you. Actually, it might be coffee—either the caffeine or the coffee itself,

even decaf. I do sympathize with the love of it. I think all

homeopaths/naturopaths/integrative docs tell everyone to stop coffee, no

matter the problem :-). But seriously, I find that if I drink coffee every

day, after a while I have double-over-pain in my guts. With tea I don’t. So

when I’m pain free, I try to have only one cup and I add a lot of soy milk

as a buffer. If I start to feel worse, I run back to my tea.

It can take some time for all of the gluten related symptoms to go away.

Hang in there!

hi alison

sorry to hear about your troubles. check out www.emofree.com. it's not

everybody's cup of tea, but it's free and non invasive (and you might

not even have to give up coffee!) and i've seen it help with many

different situations.

best wishes

I find that any food or drink that I take in the morning helps my intestinal

tract " move " . Consuming anything by mouth tends to do that. When we consume

something by mouth, swallowing starts a wave of action all along the digestive

tract called " peristolsis " that ultimately expells matter at the far end. :-)

Here's a website, about why it can be hard to give up coffee, and why one might

want to do it anyway. Headache can be a symptom of caffeine

withdrawal...http://www.nutramed.com/eatingdisorders/addictivefoods.htm

(from the website) Coffee makes us speedy, irritable, sleepless, and often

causes heartburn or ulcers. The removal of caffeine is supposed to reduce some

of these undesirable effects. Coffee is an addicting beverage. If you consume

more than 2 cups per day, you are likely to experience unpleasant withdrawal if

you stop. The minimal suffering includes a headache, irritability, and fatigue.

The popular idea that the bad effects of coffee are caused by one chemical,

caffeine, is misleading. The 500 or so other chemicals in coffee include

aromatic or phenolic chemicals and many are probably neurotoxic; other chemicals

are allergenic. Coffee is also a crop with high pesticide residues. Coffee is

definitely allergenic and makes some people obviously sick. Chlorogenic acid is

one of the allergens .... The caffeine dose in a cup of coffee ranges from 100

to 160 mg. A cup of tea has 20-60 mg per cup and 12 ounces of regular Coca Cola

has 45 mg of caffeine.

Good luck!

I would also suggest that the coffee could be causing the headaches, if no one

else has suggested this.

When I gave up caffiene I had migranes for 3 weeks, so be prepared!
