Guest guest
I would love to take my son who is on a gfcf egg free soy free, low sugar diet to a community outing on Friday nite, but they are serving the dreaded S'mores over the campfire and I knwo he will want one. A huge sugar load like that (not to mention the gluten, corn syrup solids, and soy) would send him over the edge. Anyone have a cool campfire alternative? A little dark chocolate would be " ok " - I ususlaly use the puple " bug bites " or something similar. Thanks so much! Beth
Guest guest
How about wrapping a banana in foil and heating it over the flames? You can slit the banana and put some pieces of chocolate in too. It's really really good! Guest guest
Hmm, how about peanut butter and safe chocolate on a safe cracker or cookie base for " Reeses " type treat? Roasted fruits (banana, apple, cantaloupe) on a stick or in tinfoil are fun. Hot chocolate? My kiddo wants to participate in the ritual more than in the actual eating of it. Guest guest
I am not sure if this helps but when I was a girl guide leader we made campfire banana splits. You leave the peel on the banana and split it down the middle then you place minature marshmallows and chocolate chips in the middle wrap with foil and cook in the fire until melted. I think you could pierce it with a cooking fork and have them hold it over the fire. If you control the number of marshmallows on the banana the sugar would be less. The other alternative is to make some biscuit dough before hand and have it cooked over the fire and put jam on it. Like bannock. Guest guest
I found this gift basket http://www.ethicalplanet.com/botbaprsaba.html with a gluten free vegan s'mores kit. Not sure about the sugar content. I didn't really shop around much beyond the gift basket but you should be able to buy just the kit and get nutrition info on it. I don't know if it would be soy free either. It's hard to find soy free in the vegetarian market. An alternative would be to get some Enjoy Life cookies or snack bars. http://www.enjoylifefoods.com/our_foods/ They are free of all allergens and are really good! I personally like the snickerdoodles best! To create a s'more like creation though you could get the gingerbread spice and the double chocolate brownie cookies and smush them together. It wouldn't have the marshmellow part, but you could throw a marshmellow in between the cookies if you can find some safe ones to use. Good luck! Guest guest
Enjoy Life Foods now makes 3 chocolate bars which are free of those allergens. It has sugar, of course, but no corn, gluten, dairy or soy. Several companies make gf and dairy free cookies and graham crackers. Guest guest
Another campfire treat is to take a safe tortilla shell and spread with butter and sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on it, you then roll it up and wrap in foil and heat on the fire. My girls make these in the microwave all the time. Lynn
