Guest guest
Well we did a study with a Dr. over in Germany about oats and celiac. When my son was healthy and feeling well, the oats did not bother him. When he did not feel good he seemed to do worse. All the research I have read says that Oats are okay gluten wise, it is the fact that they are processed where gluten products are processed that make them a danger. NOt sure, any ways, we now just leave it to special occasions. Like camping I will get a cereal made with oat flour. Or when we travel I will buy instant hot oatmeal for breakfast. It never seems to bother my son. But then that is only a few times a year. Amy L. angela wrote: > Ok the old controversial subject Oats.! > > > > Just one question. Guest guest
Oh, how I miss oats!! When I was pregnant, I ate a giant bowl of oatmeal each morning, then wondered why I felt so lousy and extremely exhausted... It was after my daughter was born that I cut out wheat and gluten and because of research on what to avoid, I cut out the oats, too... However, I'm sure it had as much to do with the wheat-derived soy sauce and wheat germ I poured on top of the oats as the oats themselves!! I'm still too skittish to try them again... -Mary --- angela wrote: > Ok the old controversial subject Oats.! > > > > Just one question. Who eats oats and how has it > affected you? Who eats oats and how has it affected you? (I am doing >research for a cookbook I plan to write on Entrees) > i haven't had oats in about 8 months, but that's not from avoidance. i continued to eat oats after i went gluten-free, but not to the degree that i was previously. i initially stopped eating them for a year, but after reading the research decided to add them back into my diet. i used to eat instant or quick cooking oatmeal with jam, 5 days a week for breakfast at work. i just got out of the habit, mostly because i have so very little time. i only had them a couple of days a week in the winter. i never have have a reaction and i react pretty quickly to all my food intolerances now. luck? am i damaging myself without realizing it? or are oats part of a separate allergy group like dairy and soy? sorry but - who knows FOR SURE. if i was making a celiac cookbook there is no way i would put oats in it. IMO you would need many pairs of those flame proof undies! people seem pretty passionate about the subject and it just wouldn't be worth the stress. for the anti-oaters - don't eat them. there is research supporting your opinion. for the pro-oaters - eat them. there is research supporting your opinion too. for those on the fence - hot rice is a lovely breakfast if you have time. snow
Guest guest
I have been eating McCann's oats with no problem. I try to only eat them once a week. I think we are allowed a minimum of gluten exposure. Gluten is hard to completely avoid due to cross contamination. I appreciate the oat recipes because it broadens our narrow choice of options, for those of us who eat them. I loved the peanut butter oat bars. Thanks, Suzanne
Guest guest
Allowed? Like we've been good and now we can have our gluten? Personally I won't eat oats and wouldn't buy a gluten free cookbook that contained oat recepies.
Guest guest
Buckwheat flakes make a great substitute even for cooked oatmeal. Guest guest
They are producing wheat free oats. Oats cause the same damage as other gluten grains (per several studies in spain). The rates are similar to barley (which isn't as damaging as wheat). > > > A couple months ago I heard that a company was going to be > producing 'pure' oats that > would be safe for celiacs. No. Most have been steamed and/or subjected to other processes. Others on this list can give you more details. To eat truly raw oats you need to find whole oat groats that have not been heated. When shopping for them, be sure to ask questions. Jeff
Guest guest
One comment--I understand that oats can be contaminated with wheat. Don't remember how/why, but if one is wheat-sensitive, I was told to avoid them. Nan --- Jeff Rogers <jeff wrote: > > On Nov 25, 2007, at 7:02 AM, > williamserinn wrote: > > > Are Oats raw?? Guest guest
If you are wheat-sensitive you need to avoid oats because they both contain gluten. If you are gluten-intolerant you need to avoid rye and barley as well. Helen Nan Coursey wrote: > One comment--I understand that oats can be > contaminated with wheat. Guest guest
Gluten Free and 100% Vegetarian!I believe Spiritual CSA has some, but they are in Bethesda. Guest guest
Bob's Red Mill makes GF oats. A lot of their products are available through amazon.com in bulk at a nice savings. They also offer free shipping on orders of $25 or more. There are a lot of gluten free products available through amazon.com. I've seen some other brands of GF oats on there as well but I don't remember what brands they where. You could do a search on the site and find them easily under the grocery section.
