Guest guest
The recent discussion about dietary restrictions helping RA has me wondering if any of you have tips or experience related to neurological disorders? I'm not sure what I've got, but since May I've had trouble with my balance and my legs just give out under me. I've got painful tingles in my hands and feet, sometimes going up my arms and legs, a dreadful headache that comes and goes and visual issues. I see a different color out my left eye than out my right, but nobody knows why. Nobody can explain any of this and I'm really getting sick of tests and people implying that I'm just crazy or something. If any of you know of things I should or shouldn't be eating I'd be more than willing to give it a try and report on my results. Guest guest
Err, that should be " checked " . Maybe I should have my own neurological issues " cheques " . Guest guest
I've had some similar issues and the neurologist I saw determined I have a mitochondrial issue. There's not much I can do about it because I have chronic pancreatitis and that affect nutrient absorption, which leads to neurological issues as well. Also artificial sweeteners can cause severe neurological symptoms! I have a friend that started using splenda because she believed it was healthier for her and I looked up info on it and found that it's just as bad as aspartame and can cause a lot of the same problems. So if your using artificial sweeteners, try cutting them out of your diet and see if your symptoms improve. Agave nectar is a good sugar substitute and a low glycemic index food. MSG is another questionable substance. There's controversy over whether or not it's gluten free, but regardless, it has caused a lot of neurological and physical symptoms in otherwise healthy people. Double check herbs and spices and any canned or processed foods you eat and avoid anything with MSG as that could be a trigger. Also make sure you don't have any other food allergies or intolerance's if you haven't already done so. Intolerance's don't always show up in allergy testing so you should do an elimination/challenge diet. Also check out any medication you take, OTC or prescription, as well as herbs and supplements. There are a lot of chemicals and sometimes gluten in a lot of products! If anybody prepares food for you, have them stop and make your own food for a while too because not to wrongly accuse anybody, but some people think they are helping by sneaking things into your food. My grandmother did that when I was a kid and it cause a lot of damage in my health and my relationship with my family. Some people just can't accept that you can't have certain foods and try to prove themselves right, so be cautious of that! You can also do a colon cleanse if you haven't already. There could be stuff stuck in your colon from years ago still causing symptoms even though your gluten free. Drink lots of apple juice to help flush your system and keep you hydrated. Think about your bowel movements because they are a good indicator of your health. If they are not fairly consistent or if you don't have one for every meal you eat, then your not eliminating properly, and that can affect your health and how you feel profoundly! Lastly, make sure your getting plenty of vitamins. If your eating low/no fat then your not getting enough fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K). Vitamin A helps eyesight, as will B vitamins. All the vitamins are needed to help the body function properly. If your colon isn't working properly then you can bet your not absorbing nutrients properly. Eating small meals throughout the day (that you know for sure are safe) and getting plenty of vitamins and water can help. Definitely make sure you keep yourself hydrated because that can cause problems too! Hope this helps you or gives you some ideas to consider to help figure out what's going on. Good luck and I hope you feel better! Guest guest
Rhonda have you had your vitamin B12 levels checked? A serum B12 is useless, your doc has to do a urinary MMA. If you have taken any B12 supplements then that test won't help you either. I highly suggest you read a book called, " Vitamin B12: An Epidemic of Misdiagnoses " . I had very painful neuropathies that no one could work out the reason for. I found the book, read it and realized I was dealing with a serious B12 deficiency. The author talks a lot about the symptoms and the treatment. the most important thing I took away is that you need shots if you are deficient. you also need a form of B12 that most docs do not carry. they normally give you cyanocobalamin where you need hydroxycobalamin. they give monthly shots, where you need 6-12 weeks of daily shots, then 6 weeks of weekly shots then you start spacing them out. I discovered that I can never go longer than a week between shots before the neuropathies return. I don't have the constant pain and tingling, but I do have irreversible nerve damage in my feet because of the long term B12 deficiency. I urge you to check on your B12. it is one of hte leading causes of falls in the elderly, is responsible for huge amounts of dementia and the fix is easy. As a vegan, you are at severe risk of a b12 deficiency Shez On Jul 18, 2008, at 4:13 PM, dotcisneros wrote: > The recent discussion about dietary restrictions helping RA has me > wondering if any of you have tips or experience related to > neurological > disorders? Guest guest
Rhonda--That sounds really scary. Of course no one in the group can diagnose you, but I would second the suggestion that you get tested for food allergies, particularly latent food allergies (IgG-mediated, not instant ones) that require a blood test to detect. Some of my symptoms were the same as yours; I was scared I was going to turn out to have a brain tumor---I even fell down the stairs of my apartment building in a bout of something similar to what you are describing. Fortunately, when I gave up gluten (for celiac) and my other allergens, the symptoms went away. Email me privately if you'd like to talk further about it. When I was 22 years old circumstances landed me in a teaching hospital in Chicago, IL. I was asked about all the things you have mentioned. My right side was completely lost. That lasted for around three days. It has never happened since except the tingling in my arms and legs happened occasionally in my twenties. Yes I know what you mean about visual issues. My daughters have had them too. The one in Chicago heads a Whole Foods store. She has recently had surgery to mend the problems. She sent the other daughter here for me to care fore. This daughter seems to be having all the problems I refused to have in my childhood. I wear glasses since I came to Hawaii, This girl needs them but her sight is still reasonable. She has a son who is as bright as an almost three year old can be, walking, talking, and handling bodily functions. I have discovered throughout life having lived across the country and tried almost every new option (including colonics). What a waste! Laugh at that. I have always followed my own ideas and believe meditation no matter the kind, to be the only thing that will help you. It is your body. Doctors believe in what the AMA tells them. Find a doctor who is willing to listen to you and work with you. I have a Naturopath now along with an ND. My dentists even listen to me since I have turned vegan. It seems that all the newfangled foods have destroyed our bodies ability to correct itself. We have to return to the place where this group is. It's your own ability that can do this. Guest guest
I was thinking the same thing, Sierra. I looked around last night for a good link on neurological Lyme symptoms, and couldn't find anything that wasn't too long and complex, or too short and misinformed. A list of some of the symptoms is a start: http://adam.about.com/encyclopedia/infectiousdiseases/Lyme-disease-early-dissemi\ nated.htm Symptoms Lyme disease can affect the central nervous system and cardiac system. Symptoms can come and go and may disappear after days, weeks, or months. Symptoms include: Blurred vision Fainting Fatigue General discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling (malaise) Headache Heart palpitations Joint inflammation in the knees and other large joints Lethargy Muscle pains Stiff neck Other symptoms that can occur with this disease: Abnormal sensitivity to light Confusion Decreased consciousness Drooping eyelids Dysfunctional movement Facial paralysis (also called Bell's Palsy) Hallucinations Loss of muscle function and feeling Nausea and vomiting Numbness and tingling Speech impairment ***** When a Lyme infection isn't treated soon enough, it spreads to your nervous system. I got the most horrendous headaches when it did that. Double vision, vertigo, and some other symptoms. Very scary. About half of people don't get a bulls eye rash, so how the heck would you have any idea whatsoever what was wrong with you, or that all these problems were related? I didn't even know what Lyme Disease was for many, many years. Lyme becomes resistant to all antibiotics, so I've found alternative treatments to be the best. The Lymestrategies has much in- depth discussion on all the treatment options. Because of the multitude of symptoms Lyme has been mistaken for many other illnesses, like RA, MS, Parkinson's and ALS. Most commonly, it seems, fibromyalgia because of the fatigue. Yes, Rhonda. The doctors treat you like you're crazy. But they're the ones who are incompetent and underinformed. You can go through decades of this horrible treatment, by dozens of doctors, unfortunately. Many people have. Guest guest
Some of those things could be explained by severe migranes. I get them and my vision is altered in a throbbing disturbing way, I lose balance, but little actual pain, I also get tingles in arms & legs & face and in unusual places when tired (and sometimes I think it's related to migranes also) I have mild epilepsy which I believe is worsened by consumption of dairy Get ye to a neurologist it will relieve your worries, as will a hideous mri of the brain, I had one but now knowing that I don't have tumors or anything is a great comfort --- On Sun, 20/7/08, Sally Parrott Ashbrook <sally.parrott wrote: Sally Parrott Ashbrook <sally.parrott Re: Any experience with neurological issues?
