Guest guest
Hi All, I was told that the only place one can get Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids in their natural form is from fish. The problem I have with supplements is that the oil has been extracted from it's natural state, making it a free fat, with all the associated health hazards of free fats. My question - where do vegans get their essential fatty acids from? In their natural state, that is. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Marlene

Guest guest
Omega 3 fatty acids tend to be high in nuts and seeds, particularly flax, hemp, chia, and walnuts. They are also fairly high (on a per calorie basis) in greens, which is where grazing animals and fish get them. Omega 6 fatty acids are high in sunflower, safflower, corn, soy, and peanut. Also in primrose and borage. In the Standard American Diet we tend to get too much omega 6 and not enough omega 3. The omega 3 fatty acid known as DHA is (generally speaking) only available in animal sources such as fish and krill. Although there are some blue-green algae supplements as well. The other foods containing omega 3 mentioned above have the form ALA. Your liver needs to process ALA to produce DHA. In the fish, the fish's liver has already done the work, that's why it is already in DHA form. Guest guest
Hi Marlene; Whoever told you that was mistaken. Here's a good vegetarian-friendly web article on this topic. http://www.vegetarian-dha-epa.co.uk/ As you may see in that article, it's easy to get too much Omega 6, and requires selectivity to get enough omega 3. Certain plant foods contain more omega 3 than 6: flax seed and walnuts (very concentrated), casaba and honeydew melons, berries (raspberries, blueberries, etc), leafy green veggies (lettuce, kale, spinach, etc), Brassica family (cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage), green beans and Mungo beans (sold in many Indian groceries under the name " urid. " ), turnip (root and greens), all squashes (pumpkin, fruit and seeds; summer and winter types). Eating more of these foods in our diet helps our bodies produce DHA and EPA. We've been eating a vegan diet for over 20 years, are in excellent health, and we do eat a lot of the above foods. A vegetarian DHA supplement is an option, as you may see on the web article.
