Guest guest
well, the title pretty much explains it all. all i know is vegan means not eating any animal products/byproducts. being 14 and living in an omnivourous family and having an omnivorous diet of my own, i have no idea where to start. what will i eat, and how do i get it when there is meat, fish and diary all over the kitchen? i know my parents won't be willing to spend heaps of money on this, so what are some good, cheap vegan foods? if anyone knows of a LIST of something like that, that woud be excellent so i could make choices. thank you, and if you have AIM and want to help, my SN is barbieisanemokid. Guest guest
Congratulations! How to go about it--well, that depends on your comfort level. Some people go vegan " cold tofu, " while others gradually give up red meat, chicken, fish, etc., weaning themselves toward veganism. Since you are a teenager, you clearly can't afford a lot of specialty stuff, but most grocery stores carry veg stuff in the frozen section, soy milk near the cows' milk, veggie cold cuts, tempeh patties, etc. Do you have the ability to help pay for your vegan goods? Something I've also heard for kids trying to go veg*an is to present a lot of facts to their parents about how much healthier the lifestyle is for everyone--the person, the animals, the earth. Hey, they may even save money by not buying big hunks of dead critters. Guest guest
Hi - welcome. I'm sure you will get some answers soon. Even if you cannot go vegan yet, you will be able to eventually, and you will be able to do some research in the meantime. I always find lentils, beans, nuts and rice very handy, along with plenty of fruit and veggies. Good luck. Guest guest
lol, I have to say that I *hate* rice with a passion, and I don't like nuts... don't eat lentils... only eat baked beans. My diet consists of crisps, chips, bean burgers, vegan pizza (occasionally... when I can be bothered to make it), biscuits, vegan sausage rolls and generally any junk food you can eat that's not got animal by-products in. I'm a very fussy eater and hate most things! I'm guessing you're in the States so can't tell you where to get the food as I'm in the UK. Actually I just got back from a long weekend in New York and my friend took me to a vegan diner so that was cool. I felt bad because he likes all sorts of food and asked me what I wanted to eat and... well, I don't like any foreign food other than pizza and the noodles in Pot Noodle! I guess you should use a search engine and search for US vegan stores or vegan sites. The sites I can think of at present - www.vegansociety.com and www.veganvillage.co.uk are both UK based. Guest guest
Hi Jo, H & B's vegan sausage roll is called SOS roll. You can get small or jumbo. They're actually quite delicious and filling but I have avoided H & B as much as possible since I heard about the sh/butcher connection. They also claim (on a sign in their entrance) that they do not sell products tested on animals but my local H & B continues to sell Ribena after I have mentioned to them on many occasions that GlaxoSmithKline contract all product testing to none other than Huntingdon Life Sciences (for more info, see http://www.shac.net). At one point the manager took all GSK items off the shelf but the next time I went in they were all back. I think lots of places have their (animal) skeletons in the closet but H & B really do pretend they're something that they are not. Best wishes Heartwork <Heartwork wrote: Hi Saoirse I didn't know H & B did that! Luckily I haven't bought much there. In the UK H & B don't sell much in the way of ready/frozen meals. Guest guest
Yeah, we do usually get the vegan sausage rolls from Holland & Barrett, although the One Earth Shop in Birmingham (Allison Street) also sells a vegan sausage roll. H & B's the best shop for vegan food in my crappy small town, unfortunately. If I had the money to go to B'ham more and cut out H & B, I'd just buy everything from the One Earth Shop. I did try to stock up last time I was there. I think I still have 3 blocks of their Scheese, cause I knew I wouldn't be up there again for a while and do like my cheese! <3 Shari Black Velvet - Saoirse Soya Wednesday, February 19, 2003 8:49 PM Re: i want to go vegan, just need info. I've never seen vegan sausage rolls in any of the health food shops I visit. Jo - Saoirse Soya Wednesday, February 19, 2003 3:20 PM Re: i want to go vegan, just need info. Guest guest
> well, here's hopin ya get better.... > fraggle Thanks. I'm not too bad now. It was awful on Sat and I was out for the day, which was not good. I wanted to stay in bed but had to sneeze and cough and splutter on everyone, and show off my red nose. But it's going, slowly. <3 Shari Black Velvet
Guest guest
It's biscuits with me at present. I found out a couple of years ago that I am wheat intolerant. I never could eat normal biscuits without getting near-terminal indigestion, but I found Trufree biscuits, which I can eat without the slightest hint of heartburn - although I don't know that that's a good thing! Guest guest
Get well soon, Shari! Please have some fruit and veg once in a while! (Shut up mom!) I felt concerned when I read your e-mail about what you eat. I think good wholesome vegan food is the best medicine. (Ok lecture over, sorry but I care!) Speedy recovery! I'm actually healthy other than the junk food - never drank, smoked or taken drugs. Oh, I don't do any exercise... and rarely get enough sleep, lol, but apart from that... I do eat lots of oranges when I get colds (despite not being a bit fruit fan) and make sure I have loads of Vitamin C. And I always drink a lot of water. <3 Shari Black Velvet

Guest guest
I'm a huge fan of the Naked juices, which mix fruit and veg juices and sometimes herbs. I also love Vruit--veggie-fruit juice. I bet Naked's Tangerine Screamer would kill any cold quickly.
