Guest guest
Hi, I'm new to being a vegan (I switched from being a vegetarian just over a week ago), and also new to his group. So I thought I'd post to say hi, and also to ask a couple of - probably obvious - questions... Firstly, I've been feeling very tired for the last few days, lacking energy. Now this could just be coincidence, but any advice would be gratefully received. Diet-wise I haven't really needed to change that much - just cutting out milk in my coffee and binning a few recipies, but I guess I might be missing out on something my body thinks it needs. Secondly, I've been scouring the web for brown vegan boots, but without luck. I found a few sites selling shoes, but nothing larger than ankle-high for men. Can anyone help? Oh, and lastly, hi! Guest guest
Hi John, Welcome to the group and congratulations on choosing a cruelty free lifestyle!! It is such a joy for me and for other vegans I'm sure when another comes along! I had a problem with tiredness but it kicked in some time after I became a vegan. I coped with it by taking B12 and iron supplements. I also ate more protein through tofu and "cheatin' meats". Fruit is a great energy booster. Eating as wide a variety of food as possible should ensure you get all the nutrients you need. There's a really excellent cook book called The Everyday Vegan which is full of simple, nourishing recipes and information about nutrients. I also recommend Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating but you might have discovererd these books already. If you are in the UK Ethical Wares do a pretty good range of boots. I got my hiking boots mail order from there. I imagine you could mail order them from anywhere. Peta's US website has a virtual shopping mall so maybe you could check there as well. Best wishes! PS Don't 'bin' those old recipes, "veganise" them! John Davis <mcxg46 wrote: Hi,I'm new to being a vegan (I switched from being a vegetarian just over aweek ago), and also new to his group. Guest guest
Hi John - and welcome. I think there is something in the air - as everyone I know has been tired the last few days. Make sure you eat plenty of lentils for B vitamins, and dried unsulphured apricots are very good for iron and potassium. Also eat plenty of green leafy veg and broccoli. I don't know much about the boots. Are you in UK or US? Jo --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
Greetings and salutations, John. I don't know why you feel tired; it could be you're adjusting to the change. Are you taking supplements? As for vegan boots, try: www.veganessentials.com www.veganstore.com (Pangea) www.mooshoes.com One of them is sure to have vegan boots for guys. Guest guest
Hi, Thanks for all your replies, not to mention boot links! I've ordered the Everyday Vegan book, but am still waiting for it to arrive. My diet...well, probably not particularly balanced I guess...black coffee for breakfast, a banana for lunch, then some sort of pasta or ready-meal for dinner. But that is pretty much the same as my diet before becoming vegan really. I do have some horrific-looking vegan vitamin supplements though, which seem to be crammed full of more vitamins and minerals than you can shake a pill pot at. I also found some 'energy bar' thingies, which seem to help give me energy(!). But at £1.50 each I'm not sure I can afford that much energy! Hopefully, as someone said, it is just a case of my body getting used to the new diet. John

Guest guest
Hi John I love pasta, but I have read that it is a 'calming' food, which may mean that it doesn't give you much energy. I think you need lentils, and fresh fruit and veg which provide potassium which should help to give you more energy. Also do you drink enough water - apparently if you drink your full 1 1/2 litres per day you will have about 20% more energy. Really? Can you provide a link to a study that establishes this " fact " ? It sounds dubious to me. What would water have to do with energy? Most humans get plenty of water in the foods they eat. Also, the recommended amount of water is 2 litres, at least in the US (around 64 ounces) -- Jason M. Abels " The world is coming down around our ears and you're sticking at a few vampires! Guest guest
it has to do with yer body gettin enough water so you can process food and get rid of wastes correctly..its not that water gives you energy, it allows the body to function correctly while we get a lot of water in the food we eat, here in the west, we tend to eat a lot of processed foods, and foods with salt added to em, which take more water to utilize and flush from the body.... cheers fraggle " Jason M. Guest guest
I cannot, and I certainly don't have time to research again. I was just trying to be helpful not offering to research the subject for you. My naturopathic nutritionist recommended it, and you can read it regularly in health magazines, Here's Health, Alternative Health etc. - probably helps the liver to release glycogen - but it's up to you whether you try it or not. Guest guest
Hi John, All liquids count in the 2 litre rda but some liquids which contain alcohol and caffeine are actually dehydrating. Water is best as it makes the least work for the kidneys. Hope it's going really well for you anyway. By the way, do you have a Shoe Fayre or Primark in your area? I don't really like either of these shops but you can get non-leather shoes in casual and work style as well as trainers. They're very affordable which makes me think they're thrown together in sweatshops but most stuff is these days. At least you could get yourself sorted into vegan footwear quickly and then concentrate on these seemingly elusive brown boots! I felt so much better when I gave all my leather stuff away and concentrated on a vegan lifestyle barring the 70 or so insects and 10 spiders we unintentionlly swallow in a lifetime. Guest guest
Really, it's best to drink water, not juice. I'm one to talk; I'm a major caffeine junkie (although I try to drink less soda and more water). Some juice is OK, so long as it doesn't have too many additives, but don't depend on it solely for liquid.
