Guest guest
Hey guys, My name is 'Chelle, and I have been a veggie for nearly 1 year now (yeahy! - seriously, have I saved a cow yet? Lots of chickies I hope!). I decided to go veg after reading some articles for my uni philosophy course, and decided that I could, as I have heard others say, remain so hypercritical. Had a little resistance to it all, but my beautiful boy Ben has stood behind me 100%. Since then I have found out that I am lactose 'sensitive' - read intollerent, it causes migraines! So out goes the dairy.... Now the last step is eggs. I have been reading on the internet again, and discovered an article on the horrors of egg farming. I already knew about this, but had reconciled myself to only eat RSPCA free range eggs. But, although ludicrisly bias and inflamitory, this article made me think, and I have come across a question that I cannot answer. After the eggs are hatched, and the female chicks are sent to the nice RSPCA farms, what happens to all the boys? You would think they would be 50% of the hatchings, right? Also, How long does a chook lay for, year wize? What then? Thus..... I am seriously considering becoming 100% vegan. YEAHY!! So, does anyone have any great sites they might like to share? I am in particular wanting to look into a calcium supplement (not too happy with soy milk, at least not in that quantity), and general multivit (makes mum & nan happy - they think I get sick from not eating, No, you saw me grow up. I just get sick! :*) Anyway, more about me. I am 20, in 3rd year uni in Wagga, Aust studying Literature, Psychology, and philosophy. I live with my BF, and our brother in law stays during the week. We have a JRTx Missy, A german shep, Griff, 8 ratties (Hamish, Bailey, Minky, Diesel, Darcy, Princess, Arfner and Pea *takes a breath!*) and our gorgeous g.fish, Dumble.D. One more question... Is it possible to get a vego fish food? 'cos seriously, I don't think he would have been eating ground up cows in the wild! :*) Thanks for listening to my ramble, and thanks in advance for any help you can give! 'Chelle et al P.s.- Ben is a meat eater, but very rarely in the house. Guest guest
Hi Chelle - welcome to the list. I don't know about saving a whole cow yet - depends how much you used to eat. You certainly must have saved lots of birds though - and every little helps. I think you get calcium in sesame seeds, nuts, broccoli etc. It's best ot eat a varied diet with lots of nuts, lentils, beans, rice, and different veg and fruit. You should be okay. What's a JRT? Guest guest
Every year millions of beautiful male chicks become trash. And there's no such thing as a free range animal. Going vegan would be such a wonderful move and I hope you go for it. You'll find lots of support here. Best wishes Chelle Whitaker <thefroggiestone wrote: Hey guys, My name is 'Chelle, and I have been a veggie for nearly 1 year now (yeahy! - seriously, have I saved a cow yet? Guest guest
Chelle, The male layer chicks are killed at birth, usually by being tossed into garbage cans, but some are thrown into grinders. Hens last for maybe two years before their battered bodies are yanked from the cages and sent to slaughter. Soy milk can be an acquired taste, but keep experimenting, and you'll find one you like. You can also use rice milks or nut milks. I usually use soy milk for my cereal, but I do drink chocolate Silk at night. A multivit does anyone good; look around for a vegan supplement. You might be able to find a fortified juice if you can't bring yourself to drink soy milk. As for information about layer hens and the inherent cruelty of the egg industry, Compassion Over Killing (www.cok.net) might have information. They're based in Takoma Park, Maryland, just outside Washington, DC. Danielle ----Original Message Follows---- " Chelle Whitaker " <thefroggiestone This is me!
