clothing

well..the obvious answer would be"nuthin leather er wool"..but..its all a matter of where you want to go and how you feel....like i said, certain people feel different

pet food...a difficult crux..some folks feel we shouldn't have pets, as we are demeanin the critters and its hard if nigh impossible to make something thta is not veg er vegan, vegan..

yes, most pet foods(dog and cat) and horrid conglomertaes of waste and cast offs from the meat industry

there are vegan choices on the market, but..but..while it is quite easy to turn a dog onto a vegan diet, cats are much harder...cats need taurine and the like..cats are natural carnivores with other needs..dogs are more omniverous......tho, still with a carni. bent...

its all in how YOU feel and where you are willing to go

I'm new to vegan so i'm trying to figure out the pet food thing. I think I am confused. Don't vegans not use any animal products? If so, even pet food your buying for your pet would be using an animal product? I know when I was just vegetarian I would buy free range free flying eggs from a local farm to assure some measure of humanity. Couldn't the animals made for pet food be terribly abused as well?

I hope no one takes my questions personally, I do not know so I am asking.

Also, what clothing is ok and not ok for vegan? I didn't wear leather anyway so that won't be much of a switch but I do own cotton and wool, both of which come form animals. I don't have to give up cotten? Say no,. hee hee.

Cotton is okay as it comes from plants not animals. If you can afford it it is best ot use organic cotton as a lot of pesticides are involved with cotton production, and also can involve exploitation of people picking the cotton.

Obviously just my own personal views, as vegans have a variety of differning views on this... I would attempt not to purchase any animal based products for myself or for anyone else (including pets). I can't comment on the "necessity" of meat based products for certain animals, as I've only ever had pet budgies who thrive easily on a vegan diet anyway :-). Since the oldest living dog is vegan, I guess it doesn't do dogs too much harm!

Again, this is all personal opinion. The vegan society divides vegans into "dietary" and "lifestyle" - although I've yet to meet a vegan who is purely dietary (i.e. they wear animal based goods). Many of us use animal clothing which we had before going vegan - personally I feel it would be worse to throw it away than to continue to use it. For instance, I recently discovered that my suit, which I had 5 years before I went vegan, is 40% wool. Although all my old leather shoes and belts have reached the end of their useful lives, and I've obviously replaced them with non-animal equivalents.

What to avoid... well, obviously leather and fur, along with Silk and wool. Cotton is OK from the animal point of view.

Cotton is definitely vegan. It's a plant! The clothing you want to avoid

is silk, wool, leather and fur (duh!).

As for feeding animals to my pet--she's a cat, a carnivore. Forcing an

unnatural diet--a vegan diet to which she is ill-suited--would be horribly

cruel to her. I do what I can to reduce suffering, and I don't sweat

(terribly) what I have little control over.

Cotton's vegan but the dye used might not be. Read somewhere that red dye can involve cochineal - so it's not such a stupid question.

The bloke living down stairs from me says he had a cat which happily ate

what he ate. He says although he and the cat ate fish about once a month the

cat would eat anything carrots, cabbage, broccoli, olive oil etc.He says he

had the cat as a very young kitten, also the cat lived to the age of 23 and

did't die of old age but was put down from an accident. The vet saying it

was the oldest cat he had seen.

And can you say that wild city cats only eat animal foods while scavenging?

Cotton does not come from animals, it is grown on plantations and farms. Cotton plant are really neat looking.

the only problem in cotton is u have to find organic sources, since cotton is one of the heaviest users of pesticides and fertilizers. And, GMO cotton is making inroads as well......

never an easy answer is there??

I'd rather have GMO dreck in my clothes than my food, ya know. OK, I'd

rather not have it at all, but if these nuts are determined to put their

crap--I mean crop--on the earth, better it be in non-food related items.

well..i'd rather have neither, ya know..and my point was that the GMO cotton would use more herbicides and the like to kill off an "competing weeds" which would wash into the soil, into the river and streams, etc.....

far from using less, most of the current GMO line of crops use more herbicides, because they are built in to resist the chemicals, of course, if you built a nuclear radiation proof suit and then proceeded to dump radioactive slusge in yer backyard, while you might be safe, yer neighbors are going to be none to pleased
