Guest guest
I'm sure we've all been invited to one---potlucks. Usually there's list that says people with the last names A-H bring a main dish; I-O bring a side dish; P-S bring dessert; T-Z bring drinks and utensils, etc. Well, as we all know, for most meat-eaters a main dish means meat, while a side dish is rice or veggies. So, what do you do if you're supposed to bring a main dish?---Do you just bring an extra large side dish, or would you go so far as to, (brace yourselves), go ahead and bring meat,....... just to prove to other meat-eaters that while you are vegan, you realize that everybody else is not, and thereby bring what they would eat, as I proof that you don't want to force veganism on anyone?---Which could actually give meat-eaters a good impression of vegans. (You know, that they're not a bunch of rabbit food eating weirdos, who insist on bringing veggie burgers, when they know people won't eat them.) *This message was brought to you by: Amy STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE*
Guest guest
I've never heard of such an arrangement; most non-veg potlucks I've heard of have a sign-up sheet to ensure that we don't have everybody bringing desserts. I say bring a veggie main dish; you'll need something you are certain you can eat. After all, the veggie side dishes may have dairy, eggs, or dead animal flesh in them. Guest guest
really, main dish simply means 'Hearty'. Any warm tummy-filling dish will do. Think stew, lasagne, caserole. ~shahara (whose kids are chowing down my lentil stew as we speak!)
Guest guest
I've never been to a potluck but no way would I take dead animal. No-one would respect your veganism if you were to turn up with that in tow. There are plenty of main meal vegan choices without burgers - can't you take a veggie/bean/grain stew/risotto or something of that ilk? Tho why people wouldn't eat veggie burgers I don't know. Guest guest
I would not take meat. I would take a vegan meal - anything at all - something very tasty would be best. I would take at least twice as much as anyone else, so that I got some too. Jo I'm sure we've all been invited to one---potlucks. Guest guest
Recently I attended a good old Aussie barbecue at the house of one of my wife's mother's group friends. We brought some vegan salad (not difficult!) and some veggie sausages (or snags, as we call them). We microwaved the snags, so they wouldn't get fried in with the meat crap. Also, most of the other salads made by the women there were made purposely vegan, as they knew we were coming. One mum even made a vegan cake, which, as the cook of the house, I was most impressed with. Shows you can socialise with meat eaters in a friendly fashion without any compromise, or being seen as freaks of nature, and sometimes they are more than accommodating.
