Guest guest
Hi, Thanks for your replies...Sounds like in order to put on weight, I basically need to eat more. Doh! That said, I'm not sure I'm sure what all of the following groups are, so if anyone could fill me in that would be great... Fruits: well, all right, I know that one. Grains: rice, tempeh, right? Vegetables: reckon I know that one too! Protiens: no clue Fats: aside from the gunky stuff on meat, no clue here either Carbs: um, is that what comes in potatoes? Guest guest
Again better to reply to me directly but here goes you want fats eat nuts (best source of fat & protein in a an easy snack). Avacados are a good source of calories for people who want to put on weight. I don't remember if you you posted on the meat alternative thread but Yves makes veggie deli slices in a turkey/ bologna/ salami type styles. You may try making a sandwich for lunch 2 slices of bread, soy cheese and 2 deli slices. You can mix them up and not have the same thing everyday. The deli slices are fat-free but it will be more calories that what you are eating now. Also have some fruit with you sandwich because you want to make sure you get enough fruit. Suplement with some peanuts and cashews as a snack throughout the day; I know I said that before. For dinners I fry a lot of veggies in a little olive oil. You might try something like veat, a pasta salad (pasta with veggies and oil-based dressing) and 4 ounces of broccoli. (that includes a good source of protein, carbs and veggies). I left out breakfast, how about a luna bar with your coffee. Luna bars are 180 calories and a good source of protein. My personal diet may not be the best for you to follow but I'm trying to loose weight. Then again my 1500-1600 calories is probably a great improvement on what you are eating now. Guest guest
"Any advice gratefully received. Thanks,John" John, eat more oil, olive oil, canola oil, sesame oil. I buy unrefined organic ect. at the health food store. Find a good vegan bread and dunk it in some olive oil, yum. Also, try hummus, pita and hummus, bread and hummus, tabouli and hummus. A great fattening vegan meal is to make or buy some good hummus, make some good tabouli, then pour some olive oil on top of the hummus, then slurp it all up with a pita bread. You could also make smoothies and add some soy dream (Soy ice cream) and some protein powder. Eat avocados if you like them, just cut a nice big avocado in half, pour a bit of olive oil on top, squeeze some lemon on it, and salt it, and eat. There are many brands of vegan spaghetti sauce so make yourself a nice big plate of spaghetti! Then some vegan banana bread or scones for dessert. Yum, am I making everyone hungry? I know i'm making myself hungry. Guest guest
I have some advice - eat MORE! No, seriously though, I'm not being sarcastic. I don't think it's veganism that's the problem, it's the quantity of food you're eating. Is there a reason you don't eat breakfast and only have toast and a banana for lunch? That's what I have for breakfast. For lunch I usually have a veggie sandwhich of some sort (usually with quacamole on it) and a side of something like chips or fruit or both. I aslo usually have some sort of snack between lunch and dinner like a couple of vegan cookies. For dinner I'll often have some sort of pasta with veggies and oil and vinager or, as you said, a veggie burger or something of the sort. I also have salad with oil dressing and usually some bread and margerine. THEN, I have dessert. Mmmmm... Soy Dream Chocolate Brownie... Mmmm... Guest guest
OK, here's what you need to know, in a nutshell (ha!) Protein=4 calories a gram Carbohydrates=4 calories a gram Fat=9 calories a gram Do the math the next time you read a food label, and you will be amazed. Most fruits and veggies are low in fat, save for avocadoes and bananas (toss one in your cereal at breakfast). Soy and other beans are great souces of protein. Don't worry about food combining to make a complete protein. Eat enough throughout the day, and you will get your protein. Oils are fats, as is margarine (there are several vegan margarines to toss on your baked potato or toast). Nuts and seeds are good sources of protein, but they can be fatty. It really sounds as if you are not eating enough--so EAT! Enjoy life, enjoy food. Guest guest
John It could be that you have low blood sugar - that would make you feel queasy at times, and as you eat nothing in the morning this could well be the case. Also you may be intolerant of some foodstuff. I suffered from heartburn and indigestion and queasyiness (???) all my life until three years ago, when I went to a naturopathic nutritionist who said I was allergic to normal wheat. Since giving it up my digestion is fine and I've never felt better. Jo - John Davis Wednesday, July 09, 2003 10:46 AM Re: Re: Weight Hi,> it's the quantity of food you're eating. Guest guest
It could be that you feel slightly ill in general because you're not getting the nutrients/nutrition you need. Generally very healthy people have a very healthy appetite. Chances are, after you've eaten better for a while, especially good for you foods, fruits & veggies, some grains, little bit of protein & fatty foods thrown in...the better you'll feel in general, and the more appetite you'll have. Just curious...do you have a lot of energy? I would think not as it sounds like you're not really giving your body the fuel it needs to run well. Guest guest
Hello again. A lot of people on here are trying to fatten you up quick, recommending fatty foods. I completely understand where they're coming from. Mothering/Fathering instinct kicking in...want to fatten you up and make you healthy. I don't think you really need to concentrate too much on adding so many fatty foods to your diet though. With the amount you eat all you need to do to see/feel a great improvement in your health/energy is eat more, lots more, and please make sure there's lots of variety. Here's a very basic guideline... Have a few pieces of fruit a day. A few cups of veggies. A cup or two of grains (rice, pasta, barley, quinoa, etc) Protein (1 cup or so of beans and/or a serving or 2 of fake meat or tofu, maybe munch on some nuts). Just make sure you get all this a day, split up throughout the day and you'll get LOTS more of everything (calories, carbs, vitamins, minerals, fat, etc) than you're getting now. Again, I don't think you'll need to worry about adding fat (by itself) to your diet, if you eat the protein stuff (with the exception of beans) it will probably give you all the fat you need. The only exception being some fake meats are either low-fat or fat free. Again, just make sure you get lots and lots of variety. I am not a nutritionist but I have read/learned lots over the years about nutrition from sources I trust (Richard Simmons & Dr Weil mainly). Of course, if there is anyone out there who is a nutritionist and sees anything wrong with my suggestions I'd welcome some enlightening myself. Guest guest
Ah, a nutritional guideline even I can understand! I've tried to look atadvice in the past, but always got lost amidst the proteins, vitamins andvariables, so that is great. Glad to be of service :)Ps: In order to give my dog a balanced diet, I buy a large bag of food thatprovides everything they need. Why can't someone do that for humans?! Well....you could always chow down with the dog. Take care, Tammy
Guest guest
Hi, > Well....you could always chow down with the dog. Tempting...I did actually try a couple of their biscuits (well, they are vegan), and they were actually quite nice! Kind of a cross between a digestive biscuit and weetabix, if I recall. Hmm. Bet that's put you all of your lunch... John - " Tammy " <kittytooo Friday, July 11, 2003 8:12 AM Re: Weight Ah, a nutritional guideline even I can understand! Guest guest
Nah, it's just cereal....real dense, dry, gritty and bland cereal, but cereal nonetheless. Now I suppose I put everyone off their lunch more by going into details Take care, Tammy - John Davis Friday, July 11, 2003 4:38 AM Re: Weight Hi,> Well....you could always chow down with the dog. ;)Tempting...I did actually try a couple of their biscuits (well, they arevegan), and they were actually quite nice!
