Guest guest
Hello! I just had to share this with all of you! If you are very health conscious and won't eat anything with partially hydrogenated oil....stop reading now. If, on the other hand, you are willing to overlook that, from time to time, in order to have a true ice cream (non-dairy) experience, read on. I have never been all that crazy about any of the plain chocolate or vanilla non-dairy ice creams. I tried every major brand I could find(Soy Dream, Soy Delicious, Tofutti, etc.) with chocolate and vanilla and none of them had the right texture or taste, they all had an odd flavor. Understand, I love Tofutti Wildberry Supreme and the Soy Delicious Purely Decadent Chocolate Brownie Almond is pretty good too. It's just the plain chocolate and vanilla I had a problem with. That is, until now! I went to Pick N Save (major grocery store near me) last week and spotted a new brand of Non-dairy ice cream. It's brand new to Pick N Save (I know, I check the dinky frozen health food section every time I go there). It is made by Mocha Mix. It comes in a 1.875 pint container. It's a round container with a lift off cover similar to the Tofutti Pint size ice creams but it's a little shorter and a good amount wider around and is made from paper instead of plastic. It says Mocha Mix Non-Dairy Desert, Lactose Free, Vanilla. When I first saw it I didn't think it would be Vegan because it looked so different from the rest, but it is. We had it in the freezer for a couple days before trying it. I usually try new ice creams the same day I get them, but have so often been disappointed, that I wasn't over eager to try it. Well, I tried it. It's just like ice cream, I swear! It is a bit more like a slightly lighter ice cream, a bit softer than traditional, but it's creamy, and tastes like vanilla ice cream, no funny taste, it even looks like ice cream, even when melted. Of all the other ice creams I've tried I wouldn't say any of them could fool a non-Vegan but I truly believe this one could. I even had my Mother try it and she agreed that it tasted just like ice cream. If you knew her and saw all the funny faces she's made when trying things like chocolate almond milk and other things I thought tasted just fine you'd understand what a feat that is. Only one problem, the only flavor that was available was Vanilla. I'm EAGERLY awaiting chocolate! If they can do the same for chocolate, I'm set! As I said, this is a very new product, so it may or may not be available in your area. I hope it is. I served it with warm Marie Callender Apple Crumb Cobbler and it worked great. Oh man! I just had to do that, didn't I? I just happen to have some chocolate chip cookies made from the Ghiradelli boxed chocolate chip cookie mix... My husband made them last night...his idea...yes, they're that good! (And yes, they're vegan. We make them with Earth Balance margarine in place of the butter and whizzed tofu in place of the eggs...go here for info on whizzed tofu, http://home.teleport.com/~noelvn/vegan/egg_replacers.html ) Anyway, I took a chocolate chip cookie and proceeded to dip it into this new ice cream and it's just NIRVANA. Why'd I have to do that?! It's sooooooo good. Now I'll never lose weight :} By the way, even though it's made with partially hydrogenated soybean oil it's surprisingly low in fat....here's a comparison. Tofutti Wildberry Supreme...1/2 c serving, 9 g total fat, 2 g saturated fat. Mocha Mix...1/2 c serving, 4 g total fat, 1 g saturated fat. Of couse, mixed with chocolate chip cookies I'm sure the numbers won't be anywhere near that low :} Anyway, enjoy Take care,Tammy

Guest guest
Hehe. WI, Milwaukee area. We just bought another container of it yesterday. It was the last one left, guess they're selling well. We've never gone through any of the -dairy-free pints in less than 2-3 weeks before...this was about a week...and we paced ourselves. Sure, come on over, if we run out we'll just take a ride over to the store, if they don't have any we'll just have to hold the manager hostage with spoons till they get more. Guest guest
Guess what I found at a Jewish market the other day? Mocha Mix: Mocha Almond Fudge! The same brand I mentioned before, that I recently discovered, which has the same creaminess and taste as dairy ice cream. The Mocha Almond Fudge is even better than the Vanilla (unless you're a real Vanilla nut). It has bits of almonds and a mild mocha flavor...not overly strong but plenty of flavor to become quite addicting...I know...I had to ask my husband to take it away before I ate half (or all) the container, and it's 1.875 pints! It's about the price of a Tofutti 1 pint container too, so I'm in trouble. Take care, Tammy - nikki_mackovitch Tuesday, July 22, 2003 6:31 AM Re: New non-dairy Vanilla ice cream discovered! Guest guest
I wanted to try that brand of ice cream. I love ice cream and I wanted to compare it. I couldn't find it in my town. I tried the nutrition center and our community co-op. I might look for it the next time I travel into the big city (two hours away) or maybe I gotta go out to Wisconsin. Guest guest
maybe I gotta go out to Wisconsin. Well, if you do, let me know, maybe we can get together and we'll go to one of the few restaurants around here that have Vegan options.
