Yes, MorningStar Farms breakfast strips are very much like I remember bacon to be without the grissly, gross texture and bad fats. I took some to work for a BLT sandwich the other day and gave a strip to my lunch buddy [she eats an omnivorous diet] and she was amazed how good they were; she told me they were perfectly bacon-like. Guest guest
QOTW: April 27th- May 3rd, 2009 1. What foods or flavors have you missed since becoming a vegetarian? After being meat-free for nearly a decade, I can honestly say I don't really miss flavor of real meat anymore. When I was a kid I loved bacon, but now the thought of it actually makes my stomach turn. I've also been vegan for the past 8 years and I do miss eating cheese sometimes (especially mozzarella). 2. What are some ways you curb your cravings for foods you have chosen never to eat again for ethical reasons? When I'm in the mood for a pizza, lasagna, enchiladas, etc. I get " Follow Your Heart " Soy Cheese- it's the only vegan cheese I'd recommend. Soymage Vegan Parmesan (shaker) and nutritional yeast are also great ways to give something a cheesy flavor. 3. Have you found some delicious meat substitutes that you enjoy and would like to tell the group about? When I want something " meaty " I get Gardenburger BBQ Riblets (or Morningstar, which are suspiciously similar). I also just tried a Tuscan " Chicken " Fillet from " It's all Good " which is probably one of the best vegan meat substitutes I ever had: http://www.itsallgoodfoods.com/ Peace, Dave http://nodavesclub.blogspot.com

[For example: perhaps you are vegan and miss cheddar cheese, or maybe lacto-ovo and miss bacon?] I am vegan. I did miss cheddar cheese for a while. Barbecue is also a favorite of mine. 2. What are some ways you curb your cravings for foods you have chosen never to eat again for either health or ethical reasons? It helps me to sit and think where those " foods " really come from and the suffering inherent in their production. I find that eating more greens lessons the cravings too. I have also managed to collect a wide variety of inventive vegan cookbooks in order to create great recipes. " Wheatmeat " BBQ ribs are the best! 3. Have you found some delicious meat substitutes that you enjoy and would like to tell the group about? I found this great vegan cheese(yes, it does exist) called Dr Cow Treenut cheese. It's made from cashews and macademia nuts and aged the same way that dairy cheese is. Quite expensive though. We purchased our first little chunk a couple of weeks ago online. Very tasty. Good for eating with crackers or as a snack, very rich. http://www.dr-cow.com/products/aged-cashew-nut-cheese.html Another product that's not available retail yet is Daiya Vegan Cheese. I've only read about it online. I think it's made from some kind of root vegetable. It's getting good reviews, though. http://daiyafoods.com/index.html As far as meat substitutes, I've started making more of my own, since the prepared ones can be so expensive. I use tvp, gluten, and tofu when I want a " meaty " texture. I stumbled on a great book at a library sale recently called " Make all the meat you eat out of wheat. " It was from 1980! My husband, who's not vegan except at home with me, loves the recipes that I've made from that book. You might be able to find a used copy on Amazon. Sorry for rambling. I hope that was helpful. -Valerie :-) --- On Tue, 4/28/09, Kathleen Fryback <i><kathef17 wrote: Kathleen Fryback <kathef17 Re: QOTW: What are some flavors you miss? Guest guest
I'm not vegan so don't miss a darn thing. I was vegan a long time ago but couldn't live without my cheese. In those days, there were no decent cheese alternatives. I might try it again some day. I'm getting old so it had better be soon. I've bought a lot of vegan cookbooks over the years and follow a lot of vegan blogs as well but that cheese just calls my name. I have to admit that I like eggs as well if I know that they are free range. Audrey
Guest guest
Regrettfully, when I ate meat my favorite was chicken and I still remember the taste of it and why I liked it. Although I TOTALLY detest KFC now, before I knew where they got their chicken, that's one of the places I grew up on, and even now as a vegan, when I see a KFC sign I can feel the taste in my mouth and wish it sickened me, but instead it reminds me of how used to like it. When I really have a craving for the taste or texture of chicken, I love the Morning Star " chik-n-strips " , which taste JUST like white meat chicken. It's great on rice with veggies or on salad. They have the " steak " strips, too, which taste like beef. I get that sometimes when I feel a craving for fajitas, and of course you can make those with the " chicken " strips, too. --- On Tue, 4/28/09, Kathleen Fryback <kathef17 wrote: Kathleen Fryback <kathef17 Re: QOTW: What are some flavors you miss? Guest guest
Free range aren't any better if you're carefull about buying them for ethical reasons. Just throwing that out there so you know. There is a book I want to get called " The Uncheese Cookbook " that has recipes in it on how to make vegan cheeses. Also I think Galaxy has some pretty good vegan cheddar cheese that tastes just like the " real " thing; the only thing is is that it doesn't melt too well, unfortunately. I DO know what you mean about your cheese though. That was about the HARDEST thing of all for me to give up, I think. --- On Tue, 4/28/09, Audrey Z Burrows <quiltbug wrote: Audrey Z Burrows <quiltbug Re: QOTW: What are some flavors you miss? Guest guest
Hey Lisa! Yes, I use gluten flour, too. So much easier. I just get if from the bulk bin at our local health food store. Guest guest
I miss bacon. *sigh* I have to admit that the bacon flavored TVP doesn't quite make the grade as there is a soy aftertaste in the TVP, but beats the alternative. Has anyone tried Baconaise? (bacon flavored mayo) It is said to be vegetarian and kosher friendly and test eaters on Oprah liked it. I don't think I'd like the bacon flavored lip balm, though. ugh. I don't think I'll try the bacon flavored popcorn sprinkle because popcorn (not that horrid air pop stuff) is one of my huge downfalls.
