Guest guest
I don't know really. I use tomatoes quite a bit - bolognese, cacciatore and in stew and crumble type recipes. I just wondered what people's 'favourites' are, in case there's any I like. As you know, my crop did not do well this year, but my neighbour has been giving me boxes of hers :-) Jo - " fraggle " <EBbrewpunx Tuesday, September 19, 2006 5:10 PM Re: Tomatoes > depends > what are you planning on doing? what sort of tomato recipe? > i prolly eat tomatoes everyday...especially now that my garden is spitting them out faster then we can give em away

Guest guest
Hi Peter It is nice to have fresh tomatoes. The organic tomatoes from Tesco are fairly nice though. I prefer to grow some for myself, but this year it just didn't work. I guess my neighbour uses slug pellets, otherwise she would have had the same problems as me. In the Bob Flowerdew book on organic gardening he suggests that to deter slugs from your seedlings it is a good idea to put down some 'sacrificial' lettuce leaves for the slugs to feed on. I might try that next year. Guest guest
I love the different smells in the garden - tomatoes when you water them or brush against the leaves, and all the different herbs - lavender, rosemary, mint, and lemon balm being my favourites. I also love the scented flowers and we have a steady stream of different ones throughout spring, summer and autumn - my favourites are honeysuckle, wistaria, broom, mock orange, rugosa rose (Turkish delight), phlox, and lavender. However, I dislike the smell of our willow tree when the leaves are preparing to fall. Jo
Guest guest
Hi My husband didn't like tomatoes either, for most of his life so far. He does now like them in cooking, and occasionally eats them in salad - so maybe you will get to enjoy them more eventually. Guest guest
I love the smell of jasmine - isn't it at its most powerful in the evening? I don't think it would grow outside here. Our trees are turning colour now - strangely enough the oaks are going first, and they usually wait to be last with their leaves. The ashes, which are usually first, still think its summer :-) Jo - " fraggle " <EBbrewpunx Wednesday, September 20, 2006 4:54 PM Re: Re: Tomatoes > we have lotsa jasmine around our place > so..for half the year the place is almost suffocating under the scent of jasmine > > yesterday saw first sign of fall in our yard... > leaves on the grapes are turning brown > don't really get " autumn " here..not in the normal sense > september and october are generally some of our hotter months.... > > fraggle

Guest guest
Hi Donna, If you have the chance, try them, especially the fire roasted. I use them to make pretty good salsa during the majority of the year when fresh, local, truly ripe tomatoes are not available. FWIW, Muir Glen is owned by Small Planet Foods along with Cascadian Farms, which also has nice products. I thought SPF was purchased by General Mills at some point, but I am not 100% sure.
