I love my Vegetarian Times magazines! Great stuff, you will enjoy them. Sad

about the dog, though. Very painful time for them, I'm sure.

I suscribed to it for a while back in the late 80's....in fact, I have a copy

with Dennis Weaver on the cover and he signed it for me in 1989...and

I have a copy with John Denver on the cover and he signed it for me

in 1988. I have not seen a copy in years so don't know how it compares

to the older ones. I enjoyed it....some of them had good recipes...some

were not as interesting to me. If you have a Barnes & Nobles near you,

why not go in and take a look at the latest copy and see what you think.

Or try buying back issues on ebay....here is one auction going off in about

8 hours for 16 back issues:

Here is a listing for a subscription with no shipping with a Buy It Now for

I am not really sure why I stopped subscribing to it....kids were getting

older and costing

more, I think. Anyway.....I sill have my old issues.

I get this, but don't really do a whole lot with the recipes. I like the

articles, especially one section where they talk about how certain companies

are doing concerning environmental issues. They also will have articles on

one type of food...say " mangoes " ... and talk about their health benefits,

how to use them, and give recipes. That can be helpful. I occasionally stop

buying it like Donna mentioned, but I always end up resubscribing

eventually.

VT has too many recipes that I can't use and the rest of the content

isn't too great either. I absolutely LOVE,LOVE,LOVE VegNews though!

Most (I think maybe all) the recipes are vegan! My favorite by far!

though. Just to be sure I want to continue getting it.

I d to VT for years and rarely if ever made any of the recipes. I

d because of all the health and vegetarian articles that kept me

informed. I no longer .

Years ago I d to a magazine called Vegetarian Gourmet and loved that

one., I found the recipes were less 'gourmet' than the ones in VT. Alas, it

folded and I have missed it. I still use recipes from that one.

i still really like Veg Times, it used to have more articles, now it

seems to be all recipes. I actually tend to make the recipes

frequently, though they are good for someone who is vegan or has been

veg for a while rather than transitional. My husband still eats meat

on occasion and does not appreciate my veg times recipes very much, he

likes things with faux meat and texture vegetable protein, etc. more.

The other veg magazines are fun on occasion but I still

to veg times, health, and prevention are my favorites.

Yes it sure would be wonderful to see a brief survey. It's become so popular

now and I believe with the internet, more alternative products to select from

and all the available cookbooks around people are finding it much easier.

Donna, you just explained my thoughts totally. I know that some people are

not aware of the different " trade names " for being vegetarian. It would be

nice if they included a short " definition " for what most of us know as the

definition and then they can more accurately choose what fits them mostly.

But even with that, there will be a margin of error. So, I am back to your

response, just to see the numbers for those living a vegetarian lifestyle

would be nice. I would like to see what the numbers are. It has to at

least have made it to be more than 1% of the population.

I think I will drop them a line and see if they will incorporate a survey

some time in the future. I will keep my fingers crossed.

I can't wait to peel back the pages and see what I uncover. Thanks for

letting me know that it has gotten better and the recipes are really holding

true! I also like it so that I can stay abreast of what is going on in the

world of vegetarianism and the latest information.

I would love for them to do another survey and see how much of the US

population is vegetarian and vegan since they last did it in the 90's. It

would be interesting to see how the numbers have grown. And hopefully they

clear up what it means to be vegetarians and vegans, so we get rid of any

gray areas and truer numbers.

I think just having a survery finding out the number of vegetarians would be

good enough. I don't think there really is a gray area.

There are so many labels people give themselves these days. I know people who

call themselves vegans and yet eat fish and have never heard the word

pescatarian, I know others who follow a vegan diet unless they eat out or they

suck Altoid breath mints or candy with gelatin, there are several I know who

follow a vegetarian diet for months and yet go off the wagon a few times a year

and have never heard the word flexitarian and is that really an accurate word

for them. I eat 99% vegan but I won't call myself vegan, if I eat bread and an

egg is in the mix or I feel like a teaspoon of parmesan on top of my spaghetti

or a pat or butter on my toast then I have it so I wouldn't be telling the truth

if I called myself vegan yet my diet leans more towards vegan than vegetarian.

It would be a milestone to see figures for vegetarian in general. Maybe we

should write and ask them to start a survey.

I hate to see people HAVE to label themselves. I feel like if someone just

eats healthy vegetarian meals several times a week that is great even if they

are not strick vegetarian. To me it is kinda like when you breastfeed a baby.

Doctors recommend to breastfeed exclusively for at least the first 6

months.....and to breastfeed for at least the first year. Now I breastfed all

of my daughters much longer than that recommended one year time and I hear women

say that they could not breastfeed for longer than 2 weeks or 6 weeks. I

usually tell them that they did a great job and got their babies off to a

fantastic start whether they were able to nurse their babies for the recommended

length of time or not. That is the way I look at doing anything that is good

for me or for any of my 7 children or 12 grandchildren. And there are a lot of

people who, I am sure, have no idea about the gelatin in an Altoid mint. For

me....it is not what someone eats so much as how they treat animals and their

attitude toward all of Gods creatures.......all of them, including fish or

insects, spiders or snakes....none of which are my favorites in the animal

kingdom. (I would just rather they live somewhere besides my yard.) But, you

work hard.....you do the best you can.....and just try to remember that you are

only human, as we all are whether we are vegetarian (whatever degree), vegan,

pescatarian, flexitarian or occasional meat eaters or meat eaters all of the

time. I think if we are all tolerant of one another's food choices, no matter

what they are choosing, we will all be happier.

I know that you have seen an increase to the group, so it HAS to be on the

grow. That is wonderful. I remember I was seeing a vegetarian at one time

and I had no desire of going veg, because I saw it as scarcity instead of

abundance. He NEVER talked about it more than I asked and NEVER tried to

convert me or anything. That was 8 years ago and I wish I had asked more

questions or that he would have spoken of it a bit more. I am sure I would

have been a veg for a number of years now instead of just beginning a month

ago. And he could have been a wonderful resource too. I remember asking

him what he did for BBQ’s and such. He said that he would BBQ some tofu and

other veggies. I thought that was a bit too weird for my tastes and likings

(oh how naïve and judgmental I was!). After that I never asked and he

didn’t say much else that really sticks out. He just ate his food and I ate

mine when we went out.

I brought my whole family to veg*nism at one time. So, a lot of us are

coming in droves hopefully. And I am sure the internet has helped in that

area hugely. I am using groups, forums, recipes sites, veggie info sites,

and the library for information. Back to 8 years ago, I was not big on the

internet either. So, the questions I was afraid to ask went unanswered and

didn’t come up again after my friend moved back to Michigan. By that time I

had lost interest. (sad face) So, it would be nice to see.

I'm a little confused too because I went to their website and they

are still accepting subscriptions for a full year?!

If they did go out of business it's too bad because I used to make

some of their recepies.

They might have an identity problem with their target audience.

When I used to about a year ago. They would have an article

about vegan thanksgiving recipies.. then the next page they would

marvel at the wonders of goat cheese.

They would have an article about animal cruelty.. and next page they

they have an article about the different varieties of honey.

I mainly just ignored this, but I could see how some vegans might get

annoyed with the magazine.
