5-Year Old Body Odor

A neighbor told me yesterday that her 5-year old girl started developing

underarm odor that soap and water won't keep away! She said that she was going

to start using deordorant on her daughter. Does anyone have any clues as to

what might be going on? I suspect that it may be a diet-related matter because

this family eats meat and dairy.

At age 5, underarm odor could be a sign of premature puberty --

something that is more and more common because of all the junk in the

environment that acts like estrogen, or blocks androgens. If this

little girl is developing little breasts, or beginning to have some

fine hair growth in her underarms or pubic area, or having headaches,

or having a big growth spurt in height, they should push for a visit

to a pediatric endocrinologist.

I would suggest more of a bacterial issue. As a family who enjoy veggie

food but eat meat and dairy, I've never had this issue (despite four sons

LOLs).

I would suggest she try one of the salt block deodorants instead of harsh

chemicals on her very young daughter. The salt blocks inhibit bacterial

growth by drying them out. I'll never use a spray or roll on again since I

found these.

It could be zinc deficiency. I once knew someone who had a terrible body odor

problem and no matter what they used it didn't work until they tried zinc.

Hi,

No nice way to mention this to your neighbor, but it could be that the

excess hormones in non-organic meat and dairy are increasing her hormone

levels and causing early signs of puberty. It's fairly common that kids

are starting periods earlier, developing physically earlier, etc. due to

non-organic foods. I know a girl who developed everything early like

this and started wearing deodorant when she was about 8 years old. Best

of luck to the little girl!

Hey!  A friend of mine had this same problem with her 7 year old son.  His

pediatrician ran several tests to rule out serious medical problems (don't

remember specifically what underlying illnesses they were but I can find out).

All the tests were fine and his doctor had him eliminate dairy and drink lots of

water, which helped but didn't totally eliminate the odor.  The pediatrician

finally concluded that he just had overactive sweat glands and living in the hot

Florida heat just made it worse.  She didn't put deodorant on him because they

are usually too harsh for kids - she just wiped his arm pits often with baby

wipes and rubbed in diluted essential oils (not sure which ones she used but I

guess you could use sage, lemon or whatever you have).

Hope this helps.  I would first bring it up to his pediatrician to rule out any

underlying problems.  Good luck!!

As I'm sure we're all aware, puberty has started earlier and earlier in children

over the past 30-40 years- especially so in girls. Some of this is blamed on

meat/dairy consumption and there's a good bit of scientific research to back

that up. It's also not a good thing- especially for girls. It puts them at a

higher risk for breast cancer and some reproductive cancers, off the top of my

head. It was pretty common when I taught second grade (7 year olds) for some to

have body odor, so I'm not surprised to hear of it in a five year old. I don't

know if anything can be done to 'reverse' it; but cutting out the meat and dairy

may slow it down a bit (it's worth a try, isn't it??!!??).

My husband and I use a crystal. Our 13 year old uses a hemp-based stick

deoderant.

My niece is going through the same issues. They started off by testing her

thyroid. But it ended up being early puberty. Her doctors are convinced it is

because of all the processed foods and meats she eats. I suggest that she get

checked out by a pediatrition for thyroid function. If it is not that the only

way i see to solve my nieces problem is to cut out ALL of the junk and as soon

as possible. If left untreated it can cause so so many more problems. Best of

luck to your neighbor and her daughter.
