My dear friends,

thank you so much for all the advice and knowledge that you share in this

group. I feel blessed belonging to this group.

I am kind of new in this tendency that we all share.

For now I have a situation that I do not know how to deal with it, in the

best natural way. My 21/2 years son has a congested nose and cough, He

started coughing this morning and yesterday He presented stuffy nose until

now He is with the stuffy nose. His pediatrician recommended drops for his

nose and honey any time that He coughs. If He presents fiver I can give

Tylenol to Him every four hour, according to the ped. I have the tendency to

avoid medicine and try natural remedies as much as possible. How do you deal

with stuffy nose and cough? What kind of natural remedies do you use? what

kind of things do you avoid?

Please help

thank you in advance

Hi Rebeca,

Oh, there's just nothing worse than seeing a baby suffer with a stuffy

nose! We use all homeopathic stuff and herbs, and have never even

bought Tylenol or any chemical medication like that for our

4-1/2-year-old son. (not to say those things don't have a place in

emergencies, but we haven't had a situation like that.) Anyway, we use

Hyland's homeopathic C-Plus Cold Tablets, or their Sniffles 'n Sneezes

tablets depending on symptoms. If it's just a runny nose and nothing

else, we use Allium Cepa by itself, but if there's other symptoms, we

choose which of the others works better. They dissolve immediately in

the mouth, and our son names them -- " Stuffy Nose Tabs, " " George Monkey

Tabs " (for the Sniffles and Sneezes that have Curious George on the

bottle), and he also has a name for Nux Vomica (a homeopathic for

stomach upset): " Monster Tabs " (I think he thought a monster might scare

away his stomach flu a couple months ago). :) All these tabs are

available in health food stores, but our local drug stores and grocery

stores have many of them lately in their natural/health food sections

(here in southern CA). And our family doc has told us that we can take

homeopathics once every 15 minutes for an hour, than once an hour (or as

directed) after that. It really boosts the system to get it that often

at first.

Then, for a cough, we use Boericke & Tafel's Children's Cough and

Bronchial Syrup, though it does have honey in it -- not sure if that's

okay for you all or if you're vegan. We also use Thayers' Slippery Elm

lozenges for sore throats, and Hyland's Vitamin C Tablets, antioxidant

foods (dark fruits and bright orange veggies mostly -- blueberries,

pomegranate, yams, pumpkin, etc.) and Echinacea tincture in juice for

immune system boosts. We also prop up the mattress with pillows so he's

sleeping on an incline and run a humidifier in whatever room he's in

24-hours-a-day. Then, we take him in the bathroom when each of us

showers, to breathe the steam and clear him up a bit.

About fevers, a fever fights off the illness, so to whatever level you

feel comfortable, letting a fever do it's work is wonderfully helpful.

We have a debate here as I'll let a fever go longer than my

partner/husband will -- at 101 degrees F for our 4-1/2-year-old son, he

wants to go to the doctor . . . I'm still fine with monitoring it at

home up to a bit higher before I do anything. And then, we've never

done anything other than wipe his brow with a room temp damp washcloth

-- or his body one time, when that didn't do enough. His temp

immediately dropped a bit -- and kept dropping each time we did it, so I

knew the temp was controllable, so I was okay with waiting it out.

Within a half hour, he was back to normal, and got better really

quickly.

Best of luck and hope your baby is better very soon!

Just be careful with the fevers- a friend of ours' son had a fever,

nothing unusually high or anything, and he's had a few before, of

course...but he started having seizures this last time! (it was maybe

around 101-102 when they started - he had been in a hot bath, which

the paramedics said was excellent for fevers because the body doesn't

have to work so hard to fight and actually probably kept his

temperature down lower - same principle as the room temp washcloth).

They had to call the Ambulance and everything ended up being fine with

the child, the paramedics said it was fairly common (and is more

common in younger kids, our friends son just turned 5 in January and

had never had this happen before then), it really freaked them out,

and us as well.

I may be fairly 'crunchy' on most things, but fevers are something I

won't mess around with. YMMV. :) Just a word of caution, i don't want

to scare you into anything, but it is something to keep in mind, since

this happened out of nowhere for our friends.

Fever are a good point. My general rule of thumb is I let the fever work its

'magic' (since it IS the body's natural way of fighting off germs etc.) until my

kids start to act like they're in pain or 'weird'- teary, whiny, whatever

symptoms they each display that lets me know they need some relief (for my kids,

it's usually about 100-101 degrees. Missie's right- fever-related seizures in

small children are VERY common and really not that big of a deal, not like they

would be for adults. Kids can also tolerate much higher fevers than adults can.

I'm still paranoid about them a bit, I think, but I try to remind myself. I also

give them cool drinks, etc., and that seesm to help- both with the irritability

and the fever.

Thanks my friends for sharing with me your experiences and knowledge.

Thanks God, my son does not have fiver anymore, since the last two days, but

the stuffy nose and cough persist.

I am using the humidifier and also giving to him the " Cough and Bronchial

Syrup " and " Sambucus " , and also doing what you do Lorraine about the

showers. Thank you all for your comments.

I thought that for his congested nose could be enough to use the homeopathic

Sniffles's Sneezes tablets. The pediatrician suggested also, that for his

stuffy nose I should use the saltwater nose drops. Is it OK to you saltwater

(saline ) nose drops? Do you use it? I do not really know,

I am trying to increase the amount of liquids for him. Water and juice. Here

I have another question: What kind of juice do you give to your little ones,

in this kind of situations? Do you make your own?

Any other suggestion or comments that you could have, please let me know

thanks in advance

Personally, I think saline nose drops are about as benign as it gets. I prefer

the saline nose 'mist' as it seems less offensive to me- and to the kids- than

the nose drops. Of course, they don't like anything in their noses, period.

Don't blame them. I only really use it when they're desperate.

Personally as far as juice, I buy a locally grown and pressed unfiltered apple

juice. I read that 75% of all apple juice sold in the U.S. is from China (go

figure!), and since then I only buy the local stuff- even though it's close to

$7 a gallon. That's okay- the expense causes us to drink less juice!

Glad to hear your little one is feeling better!

Re: stuffy nose and cough for child 2 ½ years

Hi Rebeca,

We don’t use a lot of juice here, but when our son is sick, we give him

whatever fluids he’ll drink – pineapple juice, apple juice, soy milk,

and my fav for anyone who’s sick: chamomile tea with fruit in it. I

make sun tea with a few slices of orange or apple steeped in with it.

It makes it delicious, and the calming effect of the chamomile is

priceless – then a dose of Echinacea tincture in the tea for an immune

boost. Very helpful!

Best of luck!

I use saline spray for my 19 month old when she has a stuffed nose. We've been

using them for a while. I use it in combination with a suction bulb (which we

call the booger bulb). She actually likes the saline and asks for it. She tries

to put it in her doll's nose, too. Anyway... it helps to moisturize the inside

of the nose which is really helpful after all the tissues and bulbs stuck up

there.

As far as juice... I like to give her young coconut water because it's loaded

with electrolites. It's sweet so most kids will like it. I give it to her right

from the coconut with a straw. When she's really under the weather I give her

liquids using a dropper. For some reason she likes taking them that way and I'm

able to get more into her than if I left it up to her to drink on her own.

Good luck!
