Guest guest
Hello Ladies, Yesterday officially ended years of me unable to make a proper pan of homemade refried beans.Gone now are all the extra dollars spent on premade canned beans from the grocery store. I found instructions on how to make them in the crockpot. After 15 yrs of marriage my husband could not believe that i made them, did not burn them, over clump them, poisin them , etc. Just put them in the pot, added desired seasoning, water, a drop of olive oil, boat motored them a little and by dinner perfect refried beans. I used my own canned pinto beans from my canning closet. My husband ate a whole bowl just as a snack. and tonight the leftovers went into an enchilada casserole.YUMMM! Guest guest
I totally need to learn how to can this summer! Sounds fantastic! We go through so many refried beans - especially the re-fried black beans! This will be fantastic for the summer - I'll cook up a double batch of black beans one day, half will go to black beans and rice and the other half can go into the crockpot for making re-fried black beans. YAY! Thanks for the recipe (I love my crockpot in the summer! Doesn't heat up the whole kitchen. ) What exactly is boat motoring them? stirring? LOL. Guest guest
I've posted this before but since you've brought up the refried beans again, I thought I would share a recipe that we love. I always keep a bowl of these in the fridge for burrito makings. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Refried-Beans-Without-the-Refry/Detail.aspx I use 1/2 tsp. pepper, no jalapenos, 7 cups water, 3 tsp. salt. These are great! > Hello Ladies, > Yesterday officially ended years of me unable to make a proper pan of homemade refried beans
Guest guest
Its the long thin thing that emeril lagasse calls a boat motor. it has 3 small blades and you can puree soup and other stuff quickly with it. i've call it a boat motor for so long, i can't remember what its really called. Canning beans is so easy. I will send the instructions later. you can do 6 months worth in one afternoon even if you do not have a pressure cooker. my hubby is waiting for me outside in the garden, so i will send it later. Guest guest
I don't understand why one needs a crockpot if the beans are already cooked? Dice some onion, saute it, add spices, beans, and water or stock, then mash it all with a potato masher. It takes about 5 minutes. I think of crockpots as being for stews and soups...things that benefit from having the flavors meld over many hours. What am I missing? Guest guest
For some of us its like the gourmet chef that can't make a pot of simple white rice. i can make really grand complicated things, but this one thing never works out to my satisfaction. call it being human.... as crockpots i love the fact that i can get about my day....i can make lasagna, enchiladas, chilis, cakes and breads.....its simple ..its gives me more time for my garden, kids, unshcooling, excercise...reading..etc. to each his own. Guest guest
I call it my personal chef. LOL. Just toss everything in, and by dinner you have 'home cooked' meal - kind of like a night off from cooking. Guest guest
> I don't understand why one needs a crockpot if the beans are already cooked? The recipe I posted is made with dried beans so does require more time than using beans that are already cooked. In this case, it is convenient to start them in the morning and come home in the evening to cooked beans. The device that Missie uses is called an immersion blender. I sometimes use that or scoop out the beans and use a potato masher to mash the beans. Connie

Guest guest
I never heard it called a boat motor before. I have an immersion blender, so this will be a snap. Cool. Guest guest
I tried the recipe (well, one I got online. They're all fairly similar, I suppose) and used my good old fashioned potato masher/applesauce masher. Worked like a charm! I considered the immersion blender, but decided a more...rustic texture. They came out great! j. ________________________________ Connie <conniemm Thursday, May 21, 2009 9:12:52 AM Re: crockpot refried beans > I don't understand why one needs a crockpot if the beans are already cooked?
