Guest guest
Ah! I am going through a major infestation of fruit flies in my kitchen!! This is the third week that they are just lingering everywhere. I started storing all my fruit in the fridge and have become a clean freak, however they are still hanging around and it's driving me insane!!!! This all started when I went to a farmer's market and bought way too much fruit and left it out on the counter - the fruits spoiled very quickly and the flies appeared. Please, does anyone have any tips for getting rid of these pesky fruit flies?! I have tried fly traps and it's caught quite a few - but it hasn't caught them all. Thank you so much!!!!!!! Guest guest
Hi Denise, If I remember correctly from biology 101 lab (150 years ago – haha), fruit flies only live a day or two, so they should be gone soon! Oh, do you have a garbage disposal? I’ve heard they love those. ☺ Run a couple cups of ice through it and then some lemon or other citrus wedges, if it can take that kind of grinding, or some baking soda and vinegar, to clean it all out. Good luck! I have to go get more ants out of my kitchen – I’ll trade you flies for ants!!!! Lorraine On Behalf Of Denise Turner Friday, May 29, 2009 10:25 AM HELP!!! How do I get rid of FRUIT FLIES?! Guest guest
A vacuum? Genius! That should be fun! Lakshmi, thanks for that article! I saw that earlier but it had so many tips that I didn't know which one to try first so I wanted to see what personally worked for someone. Thanks again! --- On Fri, 5/29/09, VAP79 <VAP79 wrote: VAP79 <VAP79 Re: HELP!!! How do I get rid of FRUIT FLIES?! Friday, May 29, 2009, 2:39 PM I used a vaccum. Guest guest
Surely nokill is the best way. Humans do quite enough killing as it is! It is easy to put a few bits of fruit (peel, pips etc) in an open container. Leave it for an hour or so, put the lid on quick smart and take them outside to release. I have had this problem and have set up a couple of traps at once, and can catch a whole bunch of flies at a time. You can quickly reduce the population to virtually nill, and if no scraps are laying about, will soon have no flies left - and a clean conscience too! Karen -- Bite Global Warming - Live Vegan! Guest guest
Bleach worked for me. Even after I cleaned everything, they were coming from down the drain so I poured just a drop of bleach and all were gone.
Guest guest
I use a jar trap. Get an old baby food jar or something like that. Put apple cider vinegar in the bottom and add some liquid soap/dish detergent. Put saran wrap over the top of the jar, rubber band it to the top. Poke a few holes in the saran wrap. The gnats will be attracted to the smell of the vinegar, go in the holes, get their legs weighted down by the soap, and not be able to get out. If you don't catch any the first couple of days, add more vinegar. The smell needs to be strong enough to attract them. , Denise Turner <deniseamay wrote: > > Ah! Guest guest
The best method I found was to put a small amount of sweet wine or something similar in an old wine bottle. Worked great. It makes me sad to think about them getting trapped in there, but those things can definitely get out of control. They will fly down to the wine and then can't get back out. In addition to your fruit bowl, sometimes they will breed in the garbage disposal or even just the sink drain. , lakshmi rao <laks_class12 wrote: > > http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Fruit-Flies > > > > > ________________________________ > Denise Turner <deniseamay > > Friday, May 29, 2009 12:24:49 PM > HELP!!! At first I was skeptical, but IT REALLY WORKS! Take a big piece of cut fruit (bananas are choice, but we used a mango pit since we didn't have any) and put it in a bowl. Then you put a teaspoon of balsamic vinegar on the fruit. Cover it with saran wrap or plastic bag with a rubber band around the edge. Take a pencil and put a VERY SMALL hole in the middle of the plastic. Small enough only for the fruit flies to get into. Then put it on the counter and check it every couple of hours. We caught like 30 in the first 2 hours and put them outside! My daughter loved checking to see how many we had caught. BTW, bananas usually have fruit fly eggs on them when you get them from the store! Hope this helps... Alice > > > > >
Guest guest
Thanks everyone! This weekend was very successful in getting rid of the fruit flies as we only have a few still buzzing around now (compared to 20+ at a time!). I put red wine and a piece of smashed banana in a big mug and covered it in plastic wrap and poked two small holes in the wrap. I left it over night and the next morning there were probably about 15-20 in there!!!! Some of them drowned but I let the rest go outside. I did this again during the day and caught a few more. I also had to swat a few with my hand out of frustration (sorry!). Thanks again for all your help!! I will definitely be more careful about leaving fruit out on the counters.....so gross to think those flies were laying eggs on the fruit!!!! Guest guest
Thanks Alice for showing some compassion! I must say that I am disappointed that so many members of a vegetarian group seem to take so much pleasure in killing insects. Obviously there is a bit of speciesm going on here!! Surely it is easier to explain to your children that you never intentionally harm another living creature, rather than saying it is OK to kill flies/ants/spiders, but it is not OK to kill cows/chickens/pigs? Children need a consistent message - I know that mine will pick up on any inconsistencies, yet adults seem to be full of them. Now that racism is slowly being stamped out, it is time to get started on speciesm! Karen -- Bite Global Warming - Live Vegan!
