Guest guest
My children are extremely allergic to chlorine. I first discovered this when our water company added heavy dosages of chlorine to our water supply and my children couldn't take baths for weeks because the chlorine made them break out in itchy rashes all over their bodies. What healthier alternatives are there to the chlorine pools? I feel my children are missing out on the summer fun by not being able to go to a pool and we don't have the option of having our own pool. Also, I would like them to learn how to swim. Guest guest
take them to the lake, find out if friends of yours use the alternatives to Chlorine, my brothers has an above ground pool and they use the saline type stuff for theirs it does just as good but isn't as harsh on you as the chlorine. I think that is what it is made of. You can always take them to the beach at Yargo and teach them to swim yourself. On Wednesday the park admission is free during the summer and you don't have to pay to get in the gates. You can teach them little things yourself each week and it gives you a day out with your kids and you can sit and have fun and enjoy the sun. Take a cooler with drinks and snacks. Have fun. ·´`·.(*·.¸(`·.¸ ¸.·´)¸.·*).·´`· «·´¨*·.¸¸. Guest guest
do you have an american family fitness near you? ours use a mostly salt solution in the water. i do not know the complete compostition though. after we joined i asked my friend why i did not smell the chlorine that usually makes me sick and gives me a migraine and thats when she told me they use mostly salt. call your local pools and see if any of them use alternative chemcials, you might be surprised to find one in your area. good luck. Guest guest
It's my understanding that the salt water version of pool sanitation (can't think of a better word!) still uses chlorine, but in far, far smaller amounts. I looked into that type of system when we were replacing our old pool equipment and less of ALL the common pool chemicals are used- but are still necessary. If you can find someone you know who has that type of system, you might do a test run to see if it bothers your kids. Lots of newer public pools, water parks, etc. do use that type of system, so it might be worth calling around. As to whether the amount of chlorine is smaller than in the public water supply, can't say; but I do notice that sometimes I can smell the chlorine in our public water so I'm guessing a salt system would be less- I NEVER smell chlorine around them (my brother in law has one of those systems, too). j. ________________________________ kathy bolen <kathy_bolen Friday, June 5, 2009 1:42:24 PM Re: Alternatives to Chlorine Pools take them to the lake, find out if friends of yours use the alternatives to Chlorine, my brothers has an above ground pool and they use the saline type stuff for theirs it does just as good but isn't as harsh on you as the chlorine. Guest guest
I know a couple of people who have installed salt water pools -- more expensive up front but big savings on chemicals. I'm sure a google search would turn up lots of info. Heather 2009/6/5 <admartin5 > > > My children are extremely allergic to chlorine. Guest guest
a long time ago I heard about an ozone pool system that kept pools clean by adding ozone (O3) to the water. I did a quick Google search for " ozone pool system " and this was one of the first articles to come up: http://swimming.about.com/od/allergyandasthma/a/cl_pool_problem_3.htm , unita walburn <uwalburn wrote: > > do you have an american family fitness near you? ours use a mostly salt solution in the water. i do not know the complete compostition though. after we joined i asked my friend why i did not smell the chlorine that usually makes me sick and gives me a migraine and thats when she told me they use mostly salt. call your local pools and see if any of them use alternative chemcials, you might be surprised to find one in your area. good luck. > Unita Walburn > Mulberry Island Station Homestead > Berefoot Books Stall Holder > visit my site @ www.mybarefootbooks.com/UnitaWalburn > > > > > ________________________________ > " admartin5 " <admartin5 > > Friday, June 5, 2009 3:55:51 PM > Alternatives to Chlorine Pools > > > > > > My children are extremely allergic to chlorine. Guest guest
In Europe a growing trend is for " swimming ponds " which don't need any chemicals. The basic idea is a pool which is half planted and the other half clear to swim in. The plants keep the whole pond clean. I haven't experienced one myself but they sound fab - if you have the money. Here is one of the many sites that have more info: http://www.pond-doctor-dave.com/swimming-ponds.html , <admartin5 wrote: > > My children are extremely allergic to chlorine. Guest guest
There was an article on ponds in this month's issue of Organic Gardening. It is a very cool concept. ________________________________ ecokiwi <fionariches Monday, June 8, 2009 1:24:30 PM Re: Alternatives to Chlorine Pools In Europe a growing trend is for " swimming ponds " which don't need any chemicals. Guest guest
We saw one in action a few years ago when we were looking at houses. It is really cool. You have to be careful about not wearing sunscreen and other things on your skin ( can harm the plants).
