Guest guest
Hi. I have a question that may seem fairly frivolous, and I've posted it to another veg group but I wanted to get as many suggestions as possible. My sister is in town next week and wants to go to Disneyland. I haven't been there in years, and the last time I went I was vegetarian but not vegan. I know they don't allow guests to bring their own food inside the park and that they have a place outside the park to picnic (they used to years ago), but my five year old wants to eat every hour (sometimes more often than that) and if we're there all day it's rather impractical to leave the park every hour to eat. My question is for the vegans out there. Have you been to Disneyland as a vegan, and if so, is there any relatively healthy food for a vegan to chose from at any of the Disneyland restaurants? I saw on their web site a number to call, and I may do that as well. Even if we don't go to Disneyland next week, I'm sure this issue will come up again, living in So Cal and all. Plus, most local amusement parks and other venues (Staples, etc.) don't allow guests to bring their own food inside the property. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Guest guest
Hiya I'm vegetarian, not vegan, but yeah, it's pretty tough to eat at Disneyland. I admit I didn't try that hard- we ate a lot of " junk " food like cheese pizza and stuff like that. There were salads at a couple of places as I recall, but they had meat on them! There is a mexican restaurant that I believe has veg black beans and stuff, I can't remember where it was but it might have been called a Cantina. Also, in adventureland they have grilled veggie kebobs. Everything is expensive there. . . On the bright side, we had NO PROBLEMS bringing food in with us. We didn't lug in a picnic basket but we had bottled water, pb & j's and tons of trail mix types of things, power bars in our backpacks/diaper bags. I think " the happiest place on earth " doesn't get too crazy about people wanting to feed their kids! Also, these kinds of things are great to nosh on in line for rides, keeps the kids busy and makes it go faster. So you can plan on a meal somewhere (and they're all expensive but you should check out the menu at the Orleans restaurant where you can watch the pirates of the carribean rides go by while you eat, this place is super expensive but such a nice break from the craziness outside) and then snacking most of the rest of the day. As I recall there are always at least some options - they sell fresh fruit and warm (but not very good!) pretzels next to the princess faire, etc. They do check your bags on your way in but I think they are looking more for weapons or alcohol. I won't swear to your being able to get the bottled water in with you but the other stuff they didn't trouble us about at all. Oh and make sure you have plenty of handi-wipes if you're going to be snacking as you go, the kids put their hands everywhere. . . Have fun! I hope you get some more informed responses than mine, I'd like to know too if there's a great place in there I haven't noticed! Dee On Jun 13, 2009, at 12:27 AM, library.momma wrote: > > > Hi. Guest guest
Hi Andrea, We just went to Disneyland last week, and we’re getting annual passes, we had so much fun. We’re lacto-ovos, but here’s what I know that can help you – you can bring in your own food, I think the limitation is as long as it’s not a cooler larger than a 6-pack (check their website for exact details, but that’s what I remember). We brought organic stuff -- snap peas, grapes, blueberries, two kinds of crackers, cereal bars, soy milks and water – knowing we’d need snacks and “surprises†while we waited in lines. ☺ Then, we got some pretty reasonable vegetarian food, but not necessarily vegan, so not sure I can help there. But, I’d for sure use their special diets phone # and get their guidance – I hear they are really helpful and give you menu items that fit your specific needs. We also used these websites for info on veg foods there: www.ultimateorlando.com/archive/rest/veg.html (which doesn’t note vegan from vegetarian, but is a good alphabetical guide for food types and where to find them) and www.wisegeek.com/where-can-i-find-vegetarian-food-at-disneyland.htm (which also seems mostly vegetarian vs. vegan tips, and with some obvious things like juice listed as a vegetarian option, but still gives and idea of where healthier food is offered, so you can get an idea of where they might be more friendly to vegan options/alterations, too). I also got a menu from some other website that lists vegetarian foods by lands, and then by restaurants, so it’s easier to just say “okay, where can we eat in Tomorrowland†or “what can we eat at this place.†I’m sure you can find something similar for vegans. Anyway, we’re in love with Disneyland right now. ☺ Let me know if you want to chat about logistics about the trip with kids, etc. – we’re sort of making mental notes since we just went and learned a bit about what we’d do the same/differently next time. Oh, and not to bogart this thread, but has anyone else used RideMax software for the Disney parks? We’re thinking of buying it, but haven’t decided yet. Have a great time, Andrea! Guest guest
We went last year. There were a few options (there is a vegan veggie burger, I don't think the bun is vegan, but it could have changed since we were there). They will also let you look at all of the ingredients if you ask them. There are also vegan options for bean burritos and tacos at one of the restaurant places, too. Of course fries and they have some vegan options in some of the little carts - fresh fruit, and a frozen lemonaid cup for a treat if it's hot while you're there). I know before we left I googled vegan options and found a bunch of the resaturants in the park (I don't recall if it was the disney site or not, but it probalby was, as you could click on the restaurant to see what they had, and then check for vegan and vegetarian options). We went to Disneyworld, in Florida, but I would guess that Disneyland would probably also have similar options. I wish I still had the site info I found - but I think I did a search for something like " vegan disneyworld restaurant options " - it was close to that anyway. Oh, we also brought in some vegan wraps for us and our son (he was 5 at the time, too - and also very into eating every hour when we were there LOL). We brought hummus wraps we made and I think some veggie sticks. For 3 of us. We did have to go through a security check, but they didn't say anything about it. I think we may even have also had water with us. My son does have a dairy allergy, so we were going to let them know if they asked us anything about the food, but they they didn't seem to even notice or whatever. I know you can call and make reservations at one of the sit-down restaurants, and if you call well in advance (probably I would say it was like 30 days advance) they will have their chef work out a dinner for you, but we didn't go that route. We did fine with the veggie burgers and burritos, and it wasn't as crazily expensive as we thought it was going to be, either, but we did have some of our own snacks along the way, too - so perhaps that evened it out for us or made it not seem to crazy expensive. It is possible - and if we went again, I wouldn't bring in our own food, since it did seem readily available. They were also very good about letting us see the book of ingredients they had for each of the different menus for the different places. I would say try to offset time you go - like don't go at noon for lunch, as that will be when it seems everyone will be there. They were really nice to us and we had no problems when we went. I'd say it might also be trickier if you go off-season as not all of the restaurants are open, but we went in April last year, and had no problems. Guest guest
Hi! I went to Disney World in Orlando in May and we were able to bring in our own food. They didn't even inspect our food or anything. Are you sure you can't bring your own food into Disneyland? It seems like they would atleast make a special exception being that you are vegan. I think it might be worth a call to their customer service? However, they do have veggie burgers, garden salads and other veggie dishes when I was there. Good luck!! --- On Sun, 6/14/09, VAP79 <VAP79 wrote: VAP79 <VAP79 Re: Re: Disneyland and Vegans Sunday, June 14, 2009, 6:51 PM I suggest you contact my friend Donna @ Green Earth Travel. Guest guest
We haven't been to Disneyland but DisneyWorld but I imagine these same suggestions will apply. First off, see if your local library has a copy of a book called something like " Veg Dining in Disney " . I think I bought one from Amazon a couple of years ago. The better, sit down restaurants will accommodate you, but it is better to map out where you think you will be and make reservations ahead of time. The customer service number is a good start to call and ask which restaurants will be best suited to your needs. The " quick stop " places are all supposed to have vegan veggie burgers and the french fries are fine (which is the most important to my gang!). There are usually free standing carts that sell fruit. We also pack in " snacks " which they allowed. But, where we've had reservations we've had unbelievable meals- - the chefs come out to our table to meet us and discuss what they are planning on making. At one restaurant the chef made us fried Ores (OK not the healthiest thing in the world) but they were awesome. That was 4 years ago and my kids still talk about it. Our omnivore friends who were traveling with us said they were going to claim to be vegans just to get the same royal treatment we got! Good luck! (A commitment was made by the organization several years back to improve offerings when the then CEO, Michael Eider, was a vegetarian!) __________ Get your dream car or truck. http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL2141/fc/BLSrjpTLa8rviO6qyTUFDEgDiO2SN17xEcIy\ gRQzGDlDOWKnkpy7bKB8Jbi/
Guest guest
I'm a vegan as well, I haven't been to Disneyland in years either, but did just go to Disneyworld. I don't know if there are any similarities, but there was a special diet line to contact if we were arranging meals there so they could give the chef a heads up about our needs. I also ordered the book " Vegetarian Walt Disney World & the Greater Orlando Area " . We were allowed to bring food and drink into the parks. That didn't used to be the case there either, so I'm thinking maybe that has changed in Disneyland as well? In WDW there were also a number of fruit stands. I would suggest going to some of the Disney forums to find further information. Those forums helped me immensely in preparing. Now, I'm curious, so I may take a look too. Good luck =) -Nancy , " library.momma " <library.momma wrote: > > Hi. Guest guest
I would take a small cooler with some staples in it (nuts, trail mix, fruit, etc.). I have been to both Disneyland and Disney World and neither are all that vegan friendly. Plus, I had done research before we went. There were sites that listed the vegetarian/vegan food at restaurants at Disney World. Well, we went there this past January and low and behold, most of those restaurants were not open that day. Go figure! So my mapped out plan of where to eat didn't work and left us scrambling for things to eat. The food for veggies is sorely lacking. Be forewarned about such info in books and on the Internet... it doesn't mean it is accurate. It wasn't in my case. I researched everything, wrote down places where we could eat, and the places were closed or didn't have the food it said they had. So all the research I ended up doing turned out to be a waste of time. Luckily, we had a diaper bag filled with good snacks, bought fruit, etc. Jacqueline
Guest guest
Hi Andrea, I also forgot to mention that I read in a couple different places online that in many Disney restaurants, you can ask for things to be made vegetarian/vegan, by asking them to alter something -- like, can you make one of these salads with no meat and cheese, and they'll make it right there while you wait. (Much of their " pre-packaged " stuff is made right there in that kitchen, packaged, and put on the sales counter 4 feet from the makers.) It may take a while longer, but way worth it to get food you can eat! There were also lots of places where you can get fruit, juice, fresh veggie sticks and stuff like that for snacks. It was nice to see kids walking around with apples in their hands -- I surely don't remember that even from going a few years ago. Have fun! Guest guest
Maybe call them and tell them your son has special dietary needs and ask what can you do about it. If I remember correctly, it has been about 8 years since I have been, they have lockers at the front where you can put your things and you can leave a small cooler with some food and take a little in at a time with you, so you only have to make a few trips. I don't think they have tell you no, especially if you make a big deal about it. If you get a confirmation from someone at Disney telling you that it is OK, have them email the info to you and print it out so you have proof if there are problems when you arrive. good luck! , " library.momma " <library.momma wrote: > > Hi. Guest guest
I want to thank everyone who responded to my question about finding vegan food at Disneyland. I guess my main worry was that I wouldn't be able to get inside the park with any snacks at all, even a few backup sandwiches and fruit for my son. Plus, my husband and I are on a very low fat diet, so even if we could find a vegan option at the park, it probably wouldn't be vegan AND low fat. So, again, thanks for the overwhelming number of helpful replies.
