I always hear about costco, and the good deals they have, and I've been thinking

about getting a membership there.

But now that I'm on a mostly vegan diet I'm wondering if it makes sense...

So for you vegan families out there...do you shop at costco??

I'm thinking it would be a good place to buy nuts and soy milks etc, but don't

know it it's worth the membership fee.

Anyone?

We are a vegan family and have a Costco membership -- it's nearly a half

hour drive away so we only go about once every 2 months. But we buy big bags

of nuts there that are always high quality and fresh, pure vanilla for a

fraction of the grocery store cost, soy milk, dried fruit, they carry

awesome fresh salsa and guacamole for close to half what the grocery store

charges for the same thing... I've found they're carrying lots of healthier

options these days. You can even buy a case of LaraBars for WAY cheaper than

other stores, and they have lots of other bars and snack foods that are

vegan, as well as of course coffee, tea, juice etc including some organic

and fair trade options. What we've found is that if you make one large

purchase in a year it can more than cover the cost of your membership in one

shot -- for example one year we bought a computer, and didn't find anything

comparable to it for anywhere near the price for more than a year after that

(you know how quickly computers plummet in value). Another year we bought a

large backyard play set for our kids, great quality and excellent price.

So, we've certainly found our membership worthwhile. We are in Canada, but

as far as I know they are all basically the same.

Hi Kim,

If costco is close, it may be worthwhile. I bought a 12 pound bag of organic

brown rice for about $8, 4 pounds of organic strawberries for $5. I love their

avocados. Their organic, fair trade house brand coffee beans are a great bargain

and really tasty. The frozen wild blueberries are the best I have ever had. They

always have a great assortment of frozen organic veggies.

I suggest that you ask for a pass to walk through the store and decide if it is

right for your family.

Kim,

We are in Los Angeles and just got a Costco membership last year. We have saved

a lot of money in that time. The organic soymilk by the case is approx. $1.00 a

quart which is way cheaper than the grocery store. Plus we do a lot of juicing

in our house and buy large quantities of spinach, bell peppers, and fruit for a

fraction of the price of the grocery store. My only advice for a fellow Angelino

is to avoid Costco on the weekends as I call it " bumper carts " on the weekends

it's so packed.

Hope that helps,

Natalie

In the past few trips, I've gotten: cases of various organic tomato products

(diced, sauce, paste); 10 lb. bag of Lundberg's organic brown rice; falafels,

hummus, chickpea salad; guacamole, salsa, organic tortilla chips; organic fair

trade vegan sugar; organic agave syrup; organic soy milk (they also have Rice

Dream); as well as many fruits & vegetables (some organic, most not). There are

many other vegan products there that don't happen to be on our grocery list.

In addition, their employment strategy is excellent for all levels of workers.

It's a good company. Definitely worth getting a membership.

We love Costco as well. We purchase everything from food to larger items

there. Interestingly a world famous surgeon by the name of Ben Carson

whom I believe is a vegetarian is on the Board of Directors.

We buy ALOT at Costco for our vegan family of 6. We actually have a

costco AMEX card which gives us 2 or 3% back on purchases including gas

(which is WAY cheaper there). We get two rebate checks a year for over

$150 which more then pays for our executive membership even without

considering what we save on what we buy (salad, peppers, pine nuts, olive

oil, Boca Burgers, guacamole, tabouli, olives, coffee, sugar, . . . all

the things people have mentioned (batteries and printer ink, holiday

photo cards). Definitely worth it!
