Baby food ideas

Hey everyone,

Was just wondering if I could ask some advice about baby food. I have a 7 month

old little girl and up to this point I have been using baby food from a jar.

They have some good ones out here at the moment with suitable for vegetarian

signs on them and I have been using mostly the organic ones. However, now she is

a little older and I really want to start making up my own food for her,

preferably that I can freeze as well. But so far I've only made boring meals for

her like potato, carrots and a few mashed fruits. I was just wondering if anyone

had any inspiration they could send my way lol. Any recipe ideas that I can

incorporate into family meals as well? Or some web sites maybe? You girls always

give such great advice, so i would really appreciate the help!

I really liked Super Baby Foods by Ruth Yaron. There's even recipes

for the kiddos (and family recipes too). It helped me through the

'what do I feed/make for him now?' stage. She has suggestions what to

try and when. What freezes well, how to freeze it (in ice cube trays,

and then pop out and store in zip top bags or other containers -

that's what worked for us).

They had it at our library, I checked it out and then ended up buying

it because I really loved it. I still use some of the recipes for us,

and my son is 6 now. :)

Until a year, solids are for the experience of eating them, not nutrition.

I used a mini food processor and a hand food mill (for travel). avocado, baked

sweet potato, cooked beans, etc. are all good early foods.

Be sure to avoid the allergy trigger foods. This is not a complete list: before

age 1, no soy, dairy, wheat, citrus, egg white, strawberries; before age 2 no

honey, chocolate, nuts.

The best book on feeding babies, toddlers and their families is called Super

Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. You should be able to find it at your local library.

There is some great information on the website: www.superbabyfood.com

I also liked Super Baby Foods. There is also a great chart of

introducing foods in one of Dreena Burton's book....Vive le Vegan I

think. Our first foods were avocado, banana, and sweet potatoes. All

of our food I just cooked at home and mashed up. Boring is good for

now! It's just about flavor and texture. Your little one thinks the

flavor of a plain veggie or fruit is amazing - she hasn't been trained

yet to think it needs salt or anything. We bought a manual baby food

grinder at Babies R Us for around $10. You just put whatever veggies

you have cooked in there and crank away so that two-bit is eating

essentially what everyone else is. We didn't start using that until

around 10 months or so because it doesn't get things really smooth.

You've got to get " Super Baby Food " by Ruth Yaron.  This book was such a

blessing to me when I was trying to figure out what to feed my babies.  My kids

are 3 and 21 months now and I still go back to this book for ideas.  She does

not condone feeding kids meat which I like (but she does briefly touch on it for

those that want to feed their kids meat).  The book is also nice because she

tells you what grain or veggie/fruit to try each month of their age.  Couldn't

recommend it enough.

http://www.amazon.com/Super-Baby-Food-Ruth-Yaron/dp/0965260313/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF\

8 & s=books & qid=1250790277 & sr=8-1

I fed my kids grains for breakfast (usually brown rice or oatmeal) with mashed

fruits (banana, pears, apples, etc), for lunch I'd give them mashed veggies

(peas, carrots, green beans, avocado, sweet potato, etc) then I'd give them

yogurt and more veggie and fruits for dinner.

Good luck!

Hey Everyone,

Thanks to everyone for the advice on baby food :) You guys really helped me out!

Unfortunately the library here doesn't stock Ruth Yarons " Super Baby Food " , but

it is available from Amazon on import, so I think I'll buy it ASAP, as all the

reviews you all gave it seem fab. Also I checked out the website some of you

recommended " wholesome baby food site " and found it really informative and

healthy. I am glad to say I have so many great ideas for my little one now.

Thanks again Ladies :)
