Hi. I was wondering if any vegetarian or vegan parents have taken their kids to

see the new movie " Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs " ? I read some reviews and

it centers around meat and other junk food. I'm wondering if it's appropriate

for a vegan child.

Thanks.

it's funny, i had the same initial thought. and both my kids asked if they were

allowed to see it. it struck me by surprise that they had the same idea. we

haven't seen it yet. but they are 6 and 8, and might check it out, and then

discuss it. glad someone brought it up too!

I have took my kids already to see it and it wasn't centered around how the food

got there or the killing of anything. The food is made from water so it is a

more effecient way of making food and no harm comes to any animals in the movie.

Also if you are concerned about your kids seeing meat in the movie use the vegan

hotdogs, veggie burgers in place of what is shown. They do show chicken that

look like you buy in stores in it but you could say that those are tofurkeys not

chickens. I have two kids one is a vegan and the other two of us are vegetarian.

We saw no harm in letting our kids see this my kids are 12 and 21. It in fact

was very very funny and lots of fun for the whole group to see.

I¹m pretty sure my 6y.o. will just think these are alternative meat

products. We¹ll be watching it by her side and will reinforce that notion if

it comes up. We eat soy meatballs (Trader¹s Joes are so good.), tofurkey,

tofu pups, etc. She is aware otherwise that other people eat animal versions

:(, but no need to dwell on that and ruin the movie for her. IMHO.

I wanted to thank everyone who responded to my question about the movie " Cloudy

with a Chance of Meatballs. " It's good to know other vegan and vegetarian

familis are going to the movie and how they are dealing with its premise.

I sort of had the same thought about the food coming from water, too. Thanks for

articulating it better than I could.

It is a very good movie to deal with gluttony and excess.  I did see it with my

kids this week and I thought it was really cute

I took my kids to see it last weekend and really enjoyed it. Yes, there is a

ton of meat and junk food, but the over all lesson about excess is fabulous.

Just look at what all that ice cream and drum sticks got them! I took it as an

opportunity to reinforce why we eat the way we do. I also think it teaches a

great environmental message about waste and excess and used it to talk about our

recycling and compost bin. There is also a good message about being yourself.

There are tons of learning and talking points from this movie for all age

ranges. I loved it and can't wait for the DVD!

My oldest and I have been fans of the book for years. From what I have seen in

the previews, it is not totally based on the book. That disappoints me quite a

bit because it seems that many of the movies they are basing on books now days

are so far from the pages that we have loved to read. I am sure the message is

great (don't over do it, watch what you eat), but when it comes to basing

something on something that exists, I am a purist. And don't even get me started

on how they have RUINED the Harry Potter books with the movies!!

Thanks for the insight...I was thinking about going to see this (we've loved the

books, too) but was a bit turned off by the style of animation. I couldn't wrap

my head around how it could possibly mirror the books. Ahh, guess we'll have to

wait for Ramona- hopefully that'll be close to the book!

Yes! I'm guardedly excited- read about it somewhere (online? can't remember). I

think it's supposed to be sort of a mix of Ramona stories vs. following one

specific book. My 6 year old is totally addicted to Ramona (as I was), so we're

waiting for this one...

I'm looking forward to that one as well. My son only recently saw an ad for

it and he was excited about it when he saw one of the wild things in the

woods (we don't watch much television). :)

He had an interest in the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs - but when I

asked him if he wanted to see it, he kind of shrugged and said not really -

I think probably because he may not remember what it was about, since I

think last time he heard about it was last month when we went to Muvico (in

IL - out in Rosemont, this theater has a child care room, with folks who

have a background in child psych or elementary education - they're really

great, and my son begs to go there, not to see movies, but to go in the play

room! I think it's for 3-11yr olds, the little ones have to be potty trained

and not in a pull-up/equivalent. It's $7, basically the price of a ticket.

We love it, as we get to see new releases, but for us it's kind of expensive

as we ALSO have to rent an IGO car to get there, hence the once every other

month or so, unless we also go with friends/family to see something

together).

A play room at the theatre! What a great idea. They are popping up in more and

more places which is nice but I've never heard of one in a movie theatre.

It's a fantastic idea, and we pass up about 5+ theaters just to go to that

one. I'm surprised that more theaters don't offer it, honestly. They're also

great about food allergies/restrictions (and it's even on the form you fill

out, they always ask us before hand if they're going to have popcorn -we

have packed our own snacks for hour son and they're fine with it).

I was surprised that not all of the Muvico's have it either - my mom is in

Florida, and there is one less than 5min's from her house, but they don't

have the child care room. She sometimes gets us gift cards for b'days and

Christmas, because she knows how much we like going and that we don't always

have money for a sitter and going out/getting a car for a few hours, etc. :)

It's like being able to have a condensed 'night out' (they do have a

restaurant/lounge/bar area upstairs but tix to get up there are about 2x a

regular tix - they have swanky love seats and tables you can also order food

and alcoholic drinks as you watch the show, if you were into that).

I think for the upstairs VIP lounge thing you can also drop your kids off

earlier to the playroom so you can have dinner and a movie (but I honestly

don't know if there's anything vegan/vegetarian that the serve up there -

maybe fries and salads...if you're lucky I guess). We tried it out once,

just the movie part as we had dinner before going and while posh, it wasn't

anything we'd be likely do again, but if we won the loveseat giveaway, that

would be ok. hee hee.

It's a fantastic idea, and I would love if more places offered it (ie if we

didn't have to drive about half an hour to get there). Maybe they're testing

out the idea here and maybe going to incorporate it in any new ones they

build? I tell all my friends who are moms/dads about it. It can't be beat,

and it is cheaper than a sitter, and apparently more fun than watching

movies (according to my son's requests). :)
