Anyone experience newborn acid reflux? Need advice!

Hi everyone!

My sister has a 5 week old who was diagnosed with acid reflux.

The doctor said there is no RX for it and didn't give much advice on

how to deal with it other than " he'll outgrow it " .  It's really

bad....he cries almost all day and night from it.

Anyone have or

had a newborn or infant with acid reflux?  Any advice?  She tried Gripe

Water and Mylicon and neither worked well.  She breastfeeds but also

supplements with formula - trying to get her to go 100% breastfeeding!

Any advice is GREATLY APPRECIATED as she is desperate!  :)

Thanks so much!

Denise

In one word: Zantac. It made a day and night difference in less than 24

hours with our young son. He suffered needlessly for nearly eight months

and in less than a day it was better. He would cry, fuss, not gain, etc.

Poor guy, in such pain. Zantac made a huge difference and I definitely

recommend another visit to the doctor for it.

Hi Denise,

I knew a family whose baby had the same kind of problem and a

chiropractor helped the baby very quickly. There's some massage she did

on the baby's stomach and taught the parents so they could do it at

home, too.

Best of luck!

Hmmm. Is he by chance a first born son? I have a friend whose son was

just like this for almost his whole first year. He also threw up/spit

up a lot. She kept after the drs because her mother's intuition told

her that acid reflux wasn't the problem. Finally at about a year, they

diagnosed him with pyloric stenosis. He had a relatively simple

procedure and fixed the problem immediately. He was like a different

kid after that. Evidently it mainly affects first born males. Just a

thought,

Hi-

This sounds TERRIBLE! I have two suggestions off the top of my head:

chiropractic and/or acupuncture (I think on kids this small, they usually do

acupressure instead of acupuncture). I also looked it up on webmd, and there

were some interesting resurces, albeit in the paid advert section at the top.

One of them was for something called 'colic calm'- the very first homeopathic

colic/heartburn/reflux remedy for babies.  At any rate, it might be worth

looking into, as they had a money-back guarantee and advertised that their

product is free of sugar, animal products, all kinds of other stuff commonly

found in gripe waters. I think it was www.coliccalm.com .

Hope someone else has some good first-hand remedies for you!

I've heard that smaller, more frequent feedings, as well as keeping the baby in

a upright position after feeding helps with acid reflux.

Also, using a wedge or something similar in the crib to elevate the baby's head.

Good luck,

Did you mention to her how the formula may be a trigger for it? May

convince her that breast is best...

Feeding while the baby is more upright and then staying upright may

keep it at bay. Also, does she have a pilates/yoga ball? Bouning on

that was my nephew's favorite thing and he had some major stomach

issues.

If she is stuck on supplementing with formula, she may want to switch

to see if it helps, too. Though I am sure you/she has tried many

things.

Best of luck

My daughter had pretty bad colic. I eliminated EVERYTHING from my diet; I wasn't

eating much more than brown rice and apples for a couple of days. The only thing

(besides time) that seemed to help was an ounce of chamomile teas.

My daughter was diagnosed with acid reflux at 2.5 months.  My doctor asked me

how she was and I said 'oh she's fine, she just seems to cry all the time'.  I

never wanted to be that paranoid mother and thought she was just fussy and I had

to deal with it.  He immediately knew what was wrong (she was also 3+ weeks

early) and said it was common in preemies.  She was prescribed novoranidine for

about a month.  We were lucky, she was fine after that.  There are many

nightmare stories about this.  The reason we thought something was wrong was

because she would wake, feed and then basically cry until she fell asleep again

and this happened all day.  If I carried her around she was fine.  It was

obviously because if I laid her down, the acid would be painful for her.

There's many things that my doctor and research suggests, like giving rice

cereal and propping up the crib at one end.  I pumped and added a very tiny

amount of rice cereal to a

bottle.  It unfortunately didn't work for her because she became constipated.

There is a that deals with this matter.  I'm afraid I can't remember

the name....I'd try typing in acid reflux babies, but not positive.  I'd be

happy to help your friend if she has any questions at all.  It is a difficult

time....especially when you're a new mom (as I was) and don't know exactly what

to expect.

Hope this helps,

Emma

No, Gretchen, she has a pretty bad diet which I am confident is contributing to

the reflux.   I have told her to clean up her diet but she is hesitant.  She is

cutting out dairy for a while to see if that helps.  I absolutely agree with a

whole foods diet - I will have to continue to promote it to her.  Thanks for the

suggestion!

Oh really, Chamomile Tea...that is a great idea.  I always drink Chamomile when

I feel indigestion and it works wonderfully.  I will suggest it to her - think

it's okay to give to a 5 wk old?  Thank you!!

5 weeks was about when we started it; only an ounce a day - you don't want the

baby to fill her tummy with tea.

My older son has reflux. We realized it around day 10 or so...(100% BF till he

turned 1)

so the doc asked us to try few things:

- put him in a slightly elevated position (so we used the bouncer a lot and we

kept his crib slightly upwards on onside)

- feed little at onetime (instead of feeding both sides every 2hrs, i fed him 1

side every 1 hr)

- he would be always hungry (as a result of reflux.. when you throw up your

esophagus burns and you feel like eating more) but the doc asked us not to feed

often as it wil lonly increase the reflux.

- ofcourse changed my diet big time... to less gassy, easy to digest food. i

even changed my prenatal med to a different one

- as he got a bit older (1 month or up i think) we started giving him gripe

water and mylacon drops

- and around 3 month the doc suggested that i mix my BM with little bit of rice

cereal so it will get a bit thinker and will not come out easily ( i did that

once a day)

I could not say for sure if any of these things helped or not. but i did it for

quite sometime.

then when he started sitting up his reflux got better and later around 1 yr he

was much better.

He still had some reflux which went away overtime.

Hope his helps

Shree

Yeah, If she eats fried food, dairy, animal protein and lots of processed foods,

that can create acid in the milk which would trigger reflux.  I'm trying to

think of a good book you could get her or that she could check out from the

library if she's willing to clean up her diet but one that isn't promoting

vegetarian or veganism, or weightloss. The best one that comes to mind is " What

to Eat " by Marion Nestle.

Best of luck.  You are a wonderful sister for trying to help her out :)

Thanks for the

suggestion!

Hi-

This sounds TERRIBLE! I have two suggestions off the top of my head:

chiropractic and/or acupuncture (I think on kids this small, they usually do

acupressure instead of acupuncture) . I also looked it up on webmd, and there

were some interesting resurces, albeit in the paid advert section at the top.

One of them was for something called 'colic calm'- the very first homeopathic

colic/heartburn/ reflux remedy for babies.  At any rate, it might be worth

looking into, as they had a money-back guarantee and advertised that their

product is free of sugar, animal products, all kinds of other stuff commonly

found in gripe waters. I think it was www.coliccalm. com .

Hope someone else has some good first-hand remedies for you!

Denise

Hi. My son is five and when he was about a month old, the doctors told us he

probably had acid reflux. I am a vegan but I had a hard time nursing, so he got

some of my milk and some soy formula. He had a lot of the same symptoms your

sister's baby has, crying all the time, sleeping very little, and so on. We kept

taking him to the doctor and they kept saying " Babies cry. " It was very

frustrating.

Finally, when we took him to his four month visit, his regular doctor listened

to us and referred us to a pediatric gastroenterologist. She ordered some tests

and we found out he had something called duodenal stenosis, which means his

duodenum was being obstructed by scar tissue. He had surgery at six months and

this corrected the problem.

I know it's pretty rare, but it is worth it to have it checked out. Good luck.

My son had this when he was born. It is very important that you prop up the head

of his mattress. By putting it on an incline it will help prevent the acid from

coming back up into his throat and burning him. You can do this by putting

something under the mattress. Since you are putting it under the mattress you

can pretty much use anything that will give it a boost. But only put it under

the head of the mattress. This way when he goes to bed his head is propped up

and it will do wonders for keeping the acid out of his throat. You don't want to

prop it up a lot, but probably about 6 inches will work well. Trust me, she is

going through hell with him like that. This helps a lot! Another thing is during

the day do not lay him down flat to nap or play. My son spent months on end

during the day sitting up in a bouncy seat. This always prevented him from

laying flat and having the acid burn him.

Really great tips, Jacqueline!  Thank you so much.  I  agree that it will be

important to keep him upright as much possible.

Thanks again!!
