We eat the side and skip the turkey; I have never had a faux turkey that I

liked. There are great Thanksgiving recipes here: www.vegetariantimes.com and

????Thanksgiving Help????

Hi everyone my son an I will be vegetarian for a year in January. This is our

first Thanksgiving being veg and I am looking for a faux turkey product that

tastes good. I have heard you guys talk about trader joe's and whole foods but

the closest ones of these are about an hour away from us. I dont mind the drive

if I know for sure i will find what im looking for. So what do you guys use

and/or will i find a faux turkey product at either of these places. We dont

usually eat the faux meat except veggie burgers but for this occasion I think it

will help my son feel included in the family gatherings. Thanks everyone :)

I can tell you which one not to get...Tofurky!  Really disgusting, and I've

tried it more than once so I'm sure I didn't just get a bad one.

I'm lucky my parents and my brother and SIL (who is also vegan) have all been

okay with not having Turkey or any animal foods on Thanksgiving for the past

three years.  We do a mushroom and bean loaf and that is the only thing that

resembles meat.  We also adopt a turkey through the Farm Sanctuary, so that

makes us feel good that we are in fact saving a turkey every year.

Just asked a long-time vegetarian friend and she said the Gardein Stuffed Veggie

Turkey from Whole Foods is the best she's ever had.  She believes it's made hot

by Whole Foods (not frozen).  :)

There is a recipe (I don't have the link off hand) from Bryanna Clark Grogan

that is a faux turkey (I think it's roughly tofu and gluten flour - so it's

a seitan turkey, you make a broth to bake it in, and it's simply amazing.

You can stuff it, or not (I make 2, and stuff only one).

I found it -

http://www.bryannaclarkgrogan.com/page/page/1435893.htm

Scroll down to where you see *BRYANNA'S SEITAN

(WITH STUFFED " TURKEY " , ROLLED " TURKEY " , STUFFING RECIPE, AND FAT-FREE

GRAVY) *(Revised Nov. 1, 2008)

I have a really good vegan 'no chicken' boullion I use for this instead of

her mix, but I've done similar spices and it comes out very well.

Congrats on 1year in January! :) That's fantastic.

Hi,

Oh, how fun to plan you first vegetarian Thanksgiving! We usually get a

Tofurkey, for the tradition of it . but I don't really love it. :-)

Last year we got presliced (like sandwich slices) Tofurkey - same

flavor, but moister and easier (and cheaper) than getting the whole

$25-30 Tofurkey roast. We laid them out on a plate and everyone enjoyed

them much more than the roast. We're doing the presliced again this

year. But, I have to say - in years before the Tofurkey, we were fine

and enjoyed the holiday just as much! :-) And there are lots of

recipes for " fake-turkey " roasts that are pretty good - we have friends

who make a sage flavored one and others who have been testing recipes in

the last couple weeks and have come up with the one they'll make this

year - a cashew roast.

(If you want the pre-made fake turkey products and can't find them, you

could try calling around to your local health food stores or even other

stores that carry vegetarian products, and see if anyone can order one

for you. Or contact the company directly and see who sells it in your

area.)

Have a great holiday!

Hi all,

Our family is ovo-veg and our fav faux meat for the holidays

is the Quorn roast. It is made with egg whites so is not

vegan. Quorn products are some of the top veggy selling

items in the UK.

If you're interested in the gardein roast you can go to wholefoodsmarket.com and

find your nearest store. Then order on-line for the holidays and they'll have it

ready for you to pick up. It's $3.99 per serving.

I think the best Thanksgiving Dinner ever is the recipe for the Turkey Roll with

Stuffing from the cookbook " Cooking with Gluten and Seitan " by Dorothy R. Bates

and Colby Wingate. My family has made this " turkey " for many years every year

for Thanksgiving. Geez, I would say we've been making it for the past 17 years!

My hubby's family, who is not veg, even likes it. It is by far the best faux

turkey recipe, in my opinion, out there! The downside of it is that it is a bit

of work and when I make it, I make the roll part the day before and let it

marinade in the broth it cooked in and then the next day (Thanksgiving Day),

stuff and bake it. Then with the broth that you cooked it in the day before,

you make your brown gravy out of that. I don't use the stuffing recipe in the

book though. I make my mother's stuffing. Hope this helps! You can order the

book from Amazon. I have a picture of what it looks like when I made it last

year if you want to see how it turns out. Let me know! You can email me at

drummrgrl1179 and I'll email you the picture from that address.

Have fun!

last year I think we got that... whole foods has a loaf that is covered in a

crust. the loaf is actually made by a company called fields roast I think. It

is vegan and yummy! they also sell the fields roast without the crust and

slightly different stuffing in the fridge section (my boyfriend loves this all

year round!). elisa

Hi!  I have made some really good dishes for the holidays.  One was a seitan

roast.  I used seitan brushed with vegan brown gravy for the base layer.  I

covered that with stuffing and put puff pastry over the top.  I made 10-12

servings using 2 pounds of seitan, and 2 1-lb loaves of bread for the

stuffing.  One package of pastry was enough to cover it.  I baked it at 400

degrees for 1-1 1/4 hours.  It was delicious!  We've also had tofu stuffed

with stuffing and a Three Sisters (corn, squash and beans) Casserole.  There

are so many really tasty options. You might want to make enough for everyone.

I'll bet that the non-veg diners will love it, too!  Good luck and have a

wonderful Thanksgiving!!

I know this isn't exactly the question you asked, and I haven't had time to read

the other answers, so I don't know what everyone else said, but I thought this

might be helpful.  Someone just sent me this page with 25 vegetarian recipes for

Thanksgiving:

http://www.recipe4living.com/articles/25_thanksgiving_recipes_for_a_vegetarian.h\

tm

and many of them look delicious!  I did made a stuffed pumpkin a few years back,

and it was really fun, both to make and to eat!

Other than that, I've never had a turkey alternative (although we eat Tofurkey

deli slices on sandwiches and they are quite yummy!)  We just eat the side

dishes.  I don't know how old your son is, but I definitely remember how much I

missed turkey, gravy, etc on my first Thanksgiving as a vegetarian, when I was

16.  Even though I had, like you, been veg for almost a year, and I completely

believed in what I was doing, it was hard not to look back that one day.  Well,

it will be my 15th Thanksgiving as a veg this year, and now I really don't look

back!  Kudo's to you and your son for becoming vegetarian!

Good luck,

Sarah

Hi Gretchen,

We adopt Farm Sanctuary turkeys each year, too! It's so fun! We have

about a decade of those turkey pictures they send -- we use them as

Thanksgiving decorations -- on the piano in the dining room, right next

to the table we eat our vegetarian meal on! :) We're adopting Bubbles

this year -- which one are you helping?

As an aside, at our son's preschool this morning, the teacher was

teaching them a song about Thanksgiving, while she held up a huge

picture of a turkey ... I paid close attention, so I could mitigate any

message relayed in the song. Happily, the song was about a pet turkey

who requested to not be a main course, so instead got a bed to sleep in

and became a house pet -- and the family ate no turkey, but other foods

instead for Thanksgiving. Our son turned and looked at me and laughed!

nice.

Have a good holiday!

Hello!

I'm in the UK and while we don't celebrate Thanksgiving, our Christmas menu

sounds very similar! I like these resources from the Vegetarian Society which

include lots of useful advise as well as loads of exciting recipes!

http://www.vegsoc.org/cordonvert/recipes/christmas.html

Good luck with it all and happy thanksgiving!

I second the Tofurky or field roasts. I think they're great. Just cook them with

some flavors. We put onions and some dried fruit in the pan and wrap them up in

tinfoil to bake. It was really good! Hope you have a wonderful 1st veg

Thanksgiving. :)

Yeah my daughter has been vegetarian for 3 years and vegan for 1 1/2. We always

try to do the Tofurky and you can order online and have them ship to you if you

don't live close to some place that sells them. We also try to incorporate all

the trimmings stuff as stuffing, cransberry stuff, vegan pumpkin pies, some

kinda sweet potatoes and we have never had a holiday that we didn't enjoy all of

it. There are recipe in the vegan lunch box book that also show holiday recipes

and you can always come up with something to fix from recipes if you want to go

that way. I came from a long line of meat eaters and I love the tofurkeys and

both my kids do also.

Like others, we always have a wonderful vegan Thanksgiving. We have a

Tofurky (we love them), mashed potatoes/gravy, cranberries, green beans,

rolls, corn, pumpkin pie, stuffed celery, etc. Yum!
