I almost enjoy reading them as much as making the recipes.

I'm not sure if this has been asked before. . . .I'm considering transitioning

from being vegetarian to being vegan. It appeals to me on many levels.

I'm looking for vegan cookbook recommendations. Because I'm trying to focus on

simpler/healthier foods, I'm not wanting to remove dairy and eggs and replace

them by " overloading " on soy products or on dairy/egg substitutes that have

ingredients I can't recognize or pronounce.

Any tips? Any favorites you can recommend? I'm not a bit dairy/egg person, but

the concept of going vegan always seems a bit daunting to me. Any guidance you

can offer would be great!

Kim.

I love the cookbook called

Quick-fix Vegetarian.

I can't think of who it's by - I've gotten it from the library - and I think

it's all vegan.  Very healthy, easy and quick!

Hey Kim,

We share the same name, and I'm also in the process of veganising my diet =)

I basically just one day stopped buying eggs and most dairy products, (I have

little girl who still wants cow milk, but thats about it) and don't miss it.

Vegweb.com is great. I'll go on there and print a ton of recipes and for a week

or two we'll have something new every day (DH comes home from work saying whats

for dinner today? hehe) Some recipes are keepers others not so much, but at

least I don't have a cookbook laying around that I don't use, just a folder

where I have the good ones.

I found that being vegan at home is easy, but it gets tricky when even things

like bread will have whey or milk in them. I'm not there yet where I'll ask a

friend who offers a peanut butter sandwich for my kids if I can read the label

on the bread....ah, why can't everyone just be vegan!?!

And oh, earth balance butter is super, and the cookbook vegan with a vengeance

has tasty treats without the egg replacer stuff.

Good luck,

Kim

My very faves are Veganomicon by Isa Moskowitz Romero (her Vegan Cupcakes Take

Over the World is amazing too - all of her books are really, really great) and

Dreena Burton's Eat, Drink and Be Vegan (her books are all good too, and she has

young children, so info on that is included).

I can't recommend highly enough all of the books by Isa Moskowitz and Terry

Romano. If you get Veganomicon, you really don't need anything else, and you

will not only be eating delicious healthful vegan food, but you'll learn a ton

about how to make YUMMY vegan things, not just pale substitutes of meaty dishes.

(Amaze your omnivorous friends with your awesome kitchen skillz!)

Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World will teach you everything you need to know

about egg replacing in baking, although the new brunch book will give you even

more tips and even has a vegan omelette that's totally delish. I just got the

cookie book and haven't made anything yet, but I'm not much of a cookie person,

I really just got it for reference. (The Washington Post featured one of the

recipes in its annual Christmas cookie guide last week, so you know it's gotta

be pretty darn good, though.)

The website is a great resource, too: http://www.theppk.com/ - try out some of

the recipes and you will see why I rave so much about these cookbooks.

I love Donna Klein's " Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen " - no faux meats or cheeses,

very little (if any) soy. Plus, the recipes are so simple that you make them

once and they stick with you.

why are many vegetarians opposed to soy? if i buy organic non gmo, is soy an

issue for a 4 yo girl? please educate me on cons of soy if i am only buying non

gmo and organic...we eat beans and nuts and pasta as well and not soy everyday

rather 3-4 times a week as my daughter won't eat beans!!

thanks kate

Well, personally, I think that a lot of the anti-soy propaganda is put out

by people pushing a meat and dairy agenda, like the Weston A. Price

Foundation and the meat and dairy industries. If you follow Dr. Campbell and

other famous vegans, they have study upon study to rebut what the others are

saying. So I think it's fine to feed your daughter organic non-gmo soy.

When we made the switch I used vegweb.com a LOT.

I have Veganomicon and it's really my main go-to book, but I do like the

Vegan with Vengence as well (I also have the cupcake book).

I picked up The Joy of Vegan Baking by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, and am

always amazed at what's in it (pudding, breads, muffins, and even beverages

and just a TON of stuff).

I also have Fresh From The Vegetarian Slow Cooker, not many thing have dairy

in it, or can easily be converted to vegan - but there is a slow cooker

seitan roast recipe I really like (when I'm not steaming several batches at

once), sloppy lentils etc.

We don't avoid soy, as I've not seen anything that convinces me (or my

husband who is skeptical about most things), but we also don't eat it for

every meal nor every day (though some days we have more than other days, as

we use soymilk and get soyogurt - but they're organic and non-GMO), but we

do vary what proteins we eat every day, and actually eat a lot of beans and

I make a lot of seitan from scratch, so I know it's not processed, it's

organic and I know exactly what is in it, etc. I can make it to our own

tastes/preferences and spice it certain/different ways depending on my plans

for it. In general I make it either 'not-beefy' (tomato based or with

no-beef boullion or both) or chixeny (poultry seasoning/ no-chicken

boullion) or I use Mojo Criollo marinade (watered down or using some of the

boullion for depth of flavor again, depending on what I'm going for with

it).

My favorites are the ones that teach you how to eat low fat/high nutrient.  I

like Eat for Health by Joel Furhman and McDougall's Quick and Easy.  I also use

a lot of recipes from www.fatfreevegan.com and www.fatfree.com

One of my favorites is Eat, Drink and Be Vegan (Dreena Burton) she has kids,

so I really feel like her recipes are kid-friendly, quick, healthy and whole

foods based. I also love Vegan with a Vengeance and Veganomicon...I rarely

have a recipe come out bad from her books! (her new cookie book has a

chapter on wholesome cookies that are very tasty!) I also really like Vegan

Dad's blog (I think he has an ebook cookbook, but I haven't purchased it).
