Wendy here again (with the 1 year old son -- original subject of the the

" lacto-ovo or vegan " thread). I'm interested in what others feed/fed their

vegan or near vegan infants. Here are the staples of what I have been feeding

my son. I'm interested in feedback and ideas - particularly in nutritious

fingerfoods or anything obvious you think we are missing. We have not yet begun

introducing nuts but I anticipate introducing nut butters soon. My plan is to

breast feed for the foreseeable future. Thanks for any suggestions or ideas you

have!

vitamin D drops daily

breast milk on demand and soy formula when I'm not available

rice rusks

dry cereal: cheerios, special K (iron)

finger food beans/soy: garbanzos, black beans, edamame

lentils

tofu

quinoa

fruit/berries: pears, apples, banana, blueberries, etc

avocado

sunshine burgers (brown rice, sunflower seeds, veggies)

dr praegers brocolli pancakes (contain egg whites so not vegan)

tofurkey (too salty I know)

pumpkin seeds

baby food: in particular brown rice/peas, summer veggies, rice/lentil dinner,

sweet potatoes (often mixed with a little olive oil)

oat, spelt and barley warm cereal (iron)

whole wh bread, whole wh tortillas

Can I ask you why you give the D drops if you are breastfeeding? my

understanding is that babies get all they need from the breastmilk. Also, if

you have vegan D2 drops I would love to know the brand?

so for your question (mine is 13 mo)... we do a lot of oat/mixed grain/wheat

germ cereal cooked with apple, hummus sometimes with sprouted grain bread,

cooked veggies, sweet potatoe fries, quinoa, beans and rice, fruit/veggie

smoothies, a little raw almond butter

best, elisa

Hi Elisa

Thanks for the suggestions! I need to get him eating hummus more

frequently. He does seem to like it (and garlic in most forms - truly

his mother's son!).

I am supplementing D because we live in Seattle (grey!), it was

recommended by my doc and nutritionist, and by Vesanto Melina (author of

Becoming Vegan). Here are a couple of links that also recommend it:

Unfortunately the D is D3 (as is the D in the soy formula he eats).

I have not been supplementing B-12 (though Vesanto Melina recommends it)

as I had a couple of nutritionists reassure me that as long as I am

supplementing adequately he should be fine.

Happy New Year!

Yeah, peppermint is not such a good flavor for babies!

Here is the kind Wyatt is taking (I can't vouch for vitacost as I got it

at Whole Foods).... The nutritionist recommended 800 IU (2 drops rather

than the 1 suggested on the bottle).
