Guest guest
Hi! I have a 6 month old breastfed baby who seems to be having some tummy issues as a result of my diet. Whenever I eat beans he wakes up half way through the night with gas and pain. As a vegan who is sensitive to soy, beans are an essential part of my diet. All the research that I've done either says that it is a myth that foods that the mother eats can cause problems for the breastfed baby or to eliminate the offending foods all together. Well, I am positive that it's not a myth, but really hate to have to cut beans out of my diet. I love them and feel that we both need the extra boost of protein while breastfeeding - which I plan to continue for at least one more year. Any advice or suggestions on how to get around this issue would be much appreciated! Thanks, maggie
Guest guest
Have you noticed a difference when the beans are cooked different ways? i.e. canned vs. cooked at home? (I know I have a different intestinal response to canned beans) Or maybe you could eliminate beans for a few weeks (maybe increase your nut/oil intake) and slowly add back in one type of bean at a time? I'm not sure...just throwing out some ideas of what I might do.... Sent from my iPhone On Jan 10, 2010, at 11:16 AM, " MaggieT " <maggieharris325 wrote: > Hi! Guest guest
Hi Maggie, I don't think that sensitivities from breastmilk are a myth either. My friend has babies who are allergic to many things and she has to eliminate them from her diet whilst breastfeeding. My only suggestion would be to try focusing on legumes as protein source, such as brown and red lentils. I find red lentils really easy and fast to cook with. Best of luck with it. I hope you can find a solution. Ange On Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 3:16 AM, MaggieT <maggieharris325 wrote: > > > Hi! Guest guest
It's not a myth, my first daughter had major food sensitivities when I was breastfeeding. Back then I was a not so healthy vegetarian and it took awhile for me to figure out it was all the dairy I was consuming. Are you using canned beans or are you buying bags of beans and soaking them overnight? Soaking the beans overnight is supposed to remove the indigestible complex sugars (oligosaccharides) from the outer coating of the beans and make them more digestible. And if you are going to buy canned beans, EdenSoy Organic brand has Kombu Seaweed in them that is supposed to make them more digestible. Here's a good article about beans and gas: http://www.savvyvegetarian.com/svreports/beans_without_gas.pdf Hope that helps! Best of luck, Gretchen ________________________________ MaggieT <maggieharris325 Sun, January 10, 2010 11:16:27 AM Breastfeeding diet question  Hi! Guest guest
I also believe that certain foods we eat can effect our breastfed baby. I swear my son was extra fussy after I drank coffee!?! And definitely after broccoli, which I just avoided while nursing. I wonder if taking an anti-gas supplement before eating the beans would help? Like Beano or gas-x? I think there are anti-gas supplements for kids too but not sure about for infants. Also, do you take digestive enzymes? I take one by Rainbow Light and that may help. Or how about cutting your usual bean portion in a meal in half? I would try those two things and if it didn't help then unfortunately, I would cut out the beans for a while. As her digestive system develops, she may eventually be able to handle the beans. I know cutting beans is hard since it's such an essential vegetarian food so I feel for you!! Good luck....let us know how it works out for you. - denise --- On Sun, 1/10/10, MaggieT <maggieharris325 wrote: MaggieT <maggieharris325 Breastfeeding diet question Sunday, January 10, 2010, 11:16 AM  Hi! Guest guest
Maggie, You could try using kombu( a type of seaweed) when you cook the beans. It removes the gas. Also, you might want to look into digestive enzymes. There are plenty vegan varieties. The other thought is to drink a cup of fennel tea before bed to calm the gas. Hope these suggestions help. Guest guest
I you decide to take an anti-gas supplement remember to check the ingredient list. Some are not vegetarian. The last time I looked at Beano it had either gelatin or a fish extract (I can't remember which). I didn't notice any of my boys having a sensitivity from the food I ate (still nursing #3). Someone else said this I think...you might try eliminating what you think is the offending food. See what happens and then introduce it again. Good luck. Guest guest
You might want to test out which beans cause the problem, maybe it is only a certain kind. Go one week without then add them back in one at a time. Also you may be better off making them at home and soaking like mentioned already and rinse a lot before and after soaking. If you do have to cut out beans there are so many other ways to get protein without soy I wouldn't worry about it. best of luck! elisa
