Guest guest
Hi everyone...I'm a new Vegan mom with a 7 month old daughter. Everyone is questioning how I'm going to raise her. I want her to be vegan. I have read a lot on this topic but still find that I'm not that confident in my decision. It would really help if I get in touch with Vegan parents and if they could tell me their success stories. This will ensure me that I'm not alone and that my daughter is going to grow up to be healthy and strong. One topic that really worries me in particular is vit. B12. Many people say that your body won't absorb it the same way when it's not from an animal product. Is this true??? How do I make sure my daughter gets enough. I really don't want to do anything wrong. Thanks for your support.
Guest guest
Hi Sherry, I'm mom to a vegan toddler (3 years old), who has been vegan since birth. I understand your worries so well. I found so much reassurance in Colleen Patrick Goodreau's podcasts. And you can so easily listen to them while your baby is nursing or sleeping. The first two I'd recommend listening to are The Essential Vitamin: B12 and Skipping the Middle Man. Both are near the end of this page: http://feeds.feedburner.com/VegetarianFoodForThought Also, I highly recommend nursing for at least two years. And starting a multivitamin at one year. I know it's hard to feel confident, but you are giving your child the best start with veganism. She's a lucky little girl! Guest guest
I wouldn't worry about what others will, or do say. She is your daughter and you can raise her how you see fit. A vegan diet is way way better than the SAD that the majority of parents give their children. As long as you keep her food as varied as possible(THINK EATING THE RAINBOW) she should have no problem getting the nutrients she needs. When she is old enough you could always give her a suppliment. As for B12 being absorbed differently, I don't think our bodies have the ability to discriminate against what food source any nutrients come from. I do, however feel that our digestive system is designed to be able to break down and use plants so much better than meat or other animal products for that matter. (just look at the fact that 70% of people are lactose intolerant.) I am sorry Ihave no books to suggest. But you came to the right place for support! everyone here is great! Congratulations on your baby girl, I have a 7 month old daughter as well. They are great! By the way, she has never had animal products and is doing great, her ped. said she is functioning on the level of a 9 month old! I think its because her brain gets to use more of the energy that her stomach would be using to break down the tough to digest foods that others give their wee ones. Anyways good luck!
