Hi,

After trying the " accidentally vegan " CVS chewable omega 3s -- previously

discussed on this list -- then never being able to find them again, I submitted

a question to Spawn Better (an awesome veg parenting resource, if you're not

familiar) about how to get omega 3s into my daughter's diet.

Check out the wealth of information the site published in response:

Hope you find this as useful as I do!

Hi,

I asked the site's administrator, Jason, about heating flax and he assures me

that it retains the omega 3s. My impression is that the fiber in the seeds

protects the oil, unlike when you buy flax in oil form.

Jessica,

Do you mean whole flax seeds? I don't think the omega 3's are available for

absorption in those. If you mean simply that the oils in unrefined ground seed

are somehow protected, I find that very hard to believe. Can you get more

specifics about how that supposedly works?

I'm still very skeptical that the oils are that stable.

Again, I'm not an expert. Jason was referring to ground flax; there are several

sites on the internet that discuss this issue if you care to learn more or

debate the science. I was just passing along what I'd heard.

This pdf quotes a lot of articles supporting stability of omega 3's in ground

flax used for baking. I'd prefer to see the articles themselves, but to me this

looks like reliable info.

www.flaxrd.com/Documents/Flax%20Stability.pdf

This message board mentions the same articles.

I haven't seen any other literature mentioned that contradicts this, so...I

guess it's true??
