Hello Vrg Parents Group,

I'm not sure if I am sending the e-mails correctly since I am new to the

group, but I am hoping to find other parents of veggie kids in the New York

area that I can speak to... My son is 4 1/2 and he is starting to ask me

questions like... Mommy, my friends in school go to McDonalds and eat

chicken, can we go to McDonalds and just use the playground and eat -- an

apple pie?

I think that since he is an only child, he gets lonely sometimes and I try

my best to find activities for him but I really rather keep him away from

playdates at McDonalds, that is why I am looking for other parents in the NY

area that may be able to give me information on any good spots to take my

son where he can play and have some fun with other children without having

to smell the fast food stuff.

In peace for all beings,

Margarita

Hi Margarita,

We aren't in NY, but have the same McDonalds-envy here in CA sometimes.

Luckily, our son (5 years) has started to understand and now calls

McDonalds " a meat shop " (his term, we didn't teach him that). But he

does say he wishes they'd have just one thing that's vegetarian so we

could go there and he could play on the playground. By the way, the

apple pies are not vegetarian either . I think they have beef fat, but

can't remember what it was. I just know they're not okay for us. (VRG

site has the info, and I'm sure someone here has a better memory than I

about where the info is.) :-) We just make a big effort to find enough

other stuff for him to do like different parks all the time, playgroups,

playdates, museums, a co-op preschool with park days and field trips,

etc. Just what you're seeking to do here! Good idea - it works for us!

Best of luck!!

Hi Margarita,

We aren't in the NYC area, but a few hours North in the

Hudson Valley. I just started a youth group through the Mid Hudson Valley

Vegetarian Society. We meet about once a month and do all sorts of activities.

In March we are making cat toys for the local animal shelters and this summer we

are planning days at two local farm sanctuaries. We also have plans for

picnics, cooking classes, movie nights, craft activities, etc. so the kids can

have fun together. Like you, I wanted my son to meet other veggie kids and I

wanted to meet other veggie parents. I thought creating this group would help

with that. If you're interested, it might be worth a trip up sometime. To

learn more, check out our website at www.mhvs.org. Good luck!

Thank you Lorraine & Dawn for letting me know that there are other parents

who feel and experience the same " alone veggie " feeling with their kids.

I had no idea that a McDonalds apple pie was not a vegetarian item! I have

never been a fan of McDonalds not even their salads but ever since I had my

boy and if you are familiar with the winter season in NYC, you know how

limited you are as far as playgrounds for your child to have fun and run

around. That is why I wanted to meet other parents in the NY area and maybe

be able to have park days or play dates with my son and other children.

Dawn, I went to your website and I love what you did. I already put a

bookmark on my favorites and even though it is quite a few miles away, I

would love to be able to make it to some of your events during the summer.

Your website is incredible, congratulations!

Margarita,

Thanks for the nice compliments on the site! My husband designed it for the

Vegetarian Society, I'll let him know you liked it! I'm glad you might be able

to make it to some events, we'd be glad to have you and your son, and anyone

else in the NY area that would be interested.

Hi Margarita,

Oh yeah, and most of McDonald’s salad dressings aren’t vegetarian

either! We have a couple different friends here who have big living

rooms that either don’t have furniture and only toys, or they push back

the furniture for playdates so the kids have an indoor area to goof

around a bit. We’ve been known to have ride-on toy races in circles in

our kitchen during inclement weather. (granted, in southern CA, our

inclement weather is generally smoke from brush fires and the occasional

rain storm that pales to your NY weather, but nonetheless.) :-)

Best of luck!

Hi Dawn!

I love your website too!

We live in Westchester, maybe we could meet for some of the events! Wow, I'm so

inspired by your ideas, thank you for sharing the page with us!

I am a vegetarian mother of 2, 9 yo boy, and 7 yo girl. They are very proud to

be vegetarian, but would love to be with other like minded children as well.

Thank you!

Janeen
