Guest guest
I've just started making my own granola in order to cut down on the sugar in pre-packaged ones and the unsatisfying commercial cereals. Last time I made it, I used oats, pecans, coconut and a little sweetener. I also cut up a fresh banana in it. Boy, was it boring! Any suggestions to zing it up? Amelia (who knows it is easy to be a vegetarian but hard to be a healthy vegetarian)!
Guest guest
How about cinnamon and ground seeds (flax, chia, sesame, sunflower, pumpkin). I usually keep all of these seeds mixed together in a jar: 1/2 flax seeds and 1/2 a mixture of the rest. It's delicious! Raisins also add a lot of flavor and taste so good with oats, seeds and cinnamon. Guest guest
Hi Amelia, I make more of snack mixes than granola, but I think the taste issues are the same. I always try to add something fruity and sometimes something salty, too - so dried cranberries are popular here, or dried pineapple, carob chips (if you don't mind some sugar), golden raisins, and for salty, I usually add some lightly salted nuts or salted pretzel pieces (if a snack mix kind of texture is okay with you) or salted soy nuts. My approach is just toss in stuff til it tastes good and I don't worry about what it looks like. :-) Good luck! Guest guest
Here is my favorite recipe for granola. I used to make it at our local coop so the portion is rather large. Which works wellf you want to make it into bars (adding melted choc. and something else I forget right now but can find out) or really really love granola. 3 quarts rolled oats (dry) 3 cups dried coconut 3 cups sunflower seeds 1/2 cup hemp seeds(sesame work well too) 1/2 Tbs. Sea salt 1 1/4 cup honey (or another sticky sweetner like agave nectar or brown rice syrup) 1 1/4 cup sunflower oil Mix together oats, coconut, sunflower seeds, and hemp seeds in a large mixing bowl. In another large bowl mix toghether honey, salt, and oil with a wisk. Poor wet mixture over dry ingrediants, mix well. Spread mixture on baking sheets no more than a half inch thick. roast for 20-30 minutes stirring every 10 in 300 degree convection oven (350 regular oven). Store in air tight container! I love this granola esspecialy in the spring in summer. A big bowl with some fresh fruit and soy milk MMMMMMMMM!
