Hi all,

I just got my test results yesterday regarding my thyroid. I have a toxic

thyroid which the doctor believes is because of Graves Disease. Im seeing an

endocronologist soon, but in the meantime im wondering if anyone has any

suggestions on natural/ diet related treatments for over active thyroids?

The doctor said she thought i needed treatment immediately, but im going

through the hospital system, so who knows how long it will take to get an

appointment! So if anyone has any experiance, i would really appreciate it.

Ange--My 15yo developed Hyperthyroidism when she was 8. She has now been off all

meds, and has had normal thyroid levels for several years. To be honest, I

didn't deliberately go out of my way to cure her, since I didn't know it could

be cured! But what I DID do, for a variety of reasons, was clean up her diet. In

doing this, I probably eliminated the toxins she had in her body which caused

her problems.

I have NO idea if my theory is correct, or exactly which foods and substances

caused the problem. But first I eliminated ALL " artificials " --colors, flavors,

sweeteners, as well as preservatives, additives, MSG, and corn syrup. She also

had known hyper responses to high salicylate fruits and veggies, so they went as

well (apples, grapes, tomatoes, peppers, and more). We have since been able to

add all of these back in for her, with no problem. I tried a gluten and casein

free diet for her, but honestly I got no response either way with that, so we

added gluten back in (we have kept most dairy out permanently for other

reasons). At that time, we weren't even thinking of vegetarianism, so we kept

meat in our diets, including for our daughter. Knowing what I know now about

hormones and toxins, I would say that should go as well--but I'm assuming you

are already vegetarian or you wouldn't be here. :)

If you consume dairy, be sure it is raw and organic. If you eat eggs, be sure

they are from organic, pastured hens.

Again, I have no idea if anything I said will help you. I'm not even sure that's

what helped our daughter. But this happens to be what we did, and today her

thyroid is normal. Connection? I sure wouldn't go back to the way we were eating

and risk our health for it.

Just my 2 cents. Marilyn

Hi Angela,

I know that Yoga and Pranayam has helped.  I know there is a yoga for the

thyroid gland but can not recall.  If I can find the link, I will keep you

posted.

I hope this helps and will keep you updated.

thanks

While I was flipping around the channels one morning, Dr. Oz was on one of the

morning shows talking about thyroids. Anyway, he mentioned that raw cruciferous

(sp?) veggies (broccoli, cauliflower) are the best for overactive thyroids, while

lightly steamed ones are better for underactive thyroids. I have an overactive

thyroid with underactive symptoms, so I am at a loss for what is better in that

case!! Hope this helps.

As with anything, a good diet will always help anyway!

Tapazole (methimazole) can be compounded. The drug can be made by a licensed

compounding pharmacist from its base ingredients. Since the nonvegan portion of

Tapazole is lactose, the pharmacist can make this drug for you without the

lactose. It will likely be a liquid. Ask the doc to refer you to a compounding

pharmacy. You may be able to find one in the yellow pages. Be sure to follow all

directions as the drug may not be as stable. I know this is an option because I

prescribed Tapazole in this form (and as a patch) to my cat patients as a vet.

(The pregelatinized starch ingredient is not an animal source.) PTU may be

available as a compounded drug also - not sure.

As the other poster mentioned, there are over 100 goiterogenic foods - foods

that can depress the thyroid if eaten in large quantities and in certain states.

Pears are one. Google for a list. Be careful, you will find info that will make

you think soy will kill you. I will leave that discussion for other posters, but

it won't kill you. You may be able to use it in conjunction with other

goiterogenic foods in your case to help you stabilize your thyroid.

Another treatment option is radiation. Consider all your options before choosing

this. As we age, our thyroid " slows down. " Many people will have a thyroid

" burn-out " as they age. Some people will develop sluggish or under active

thyroids in their elder years, especially after 65 or so, that will require

medication or trteatment. This trend will occur in people with hyperthyroidism

as well. I have two friends who had overactive thyroids in their 20's and 30's.

They were on meds. One had her thyroid normalize in her 50's and the other in

her 60's and neither are on meds now. This is not uncommon.

One friend sought help from alternative health doctors with good results. She

was like another poster - hyperthyroid with hypothyroid (under active) symptoms.

She was overweight but had to take meds which made her gain more weight and made

her tired. The alternative meds (herbs and such) balanced her and she took far

less Tapazole. She was able to maintain this until her thyroid normalized with

age. You may want to research what is available in your area.

Good luck,

Carrol
