Hi everyone!

I've been fighting off a UTI for the past month (been on 2 weeks of antibiotics,

ugh!!). I've been off antibiotics for about 1 week now and can feel the UTI

symptoms returning and have a major cold. I haven't had a chance to get new

probiotics since finishing the anti and was wondering what effect does not

taking probiotics after taking antibiotics have on you?? Anyone know? Just

curious. I'm wondering if not taking the probiotics immediately after the anti

is making the infection return and cold symptoms?? or what?

Thanks so much everyone :)

Hi Denise,

Antibiotics kill all bacteria in your body, including the good ones that

we need for gut health and overall health. Probiotics put more good

bacteria back into your body – you may need the probiotics to catch up

with what the antibiotics have done.

For a UTI, I use D-Mannose (a sugar that attaches itself to the UTI

bacteria and sweeps it out of your body, via some kind of magic – it

really works) which I get at the health food store in capsules that have

concentrated cranberry in them, too – plus I take probiotics, Echinacea,

vitamin C and lots and lots of liquids. I’ve had relief from UTI

symptoms in as little as 20 minutes with this regimen, but sometimes it

takes a couple days. Also, I try to get more sleep that day, as any

immune system threat is an open door for bacteria when you’re already

feeling run down and symptomatic.

I should say, for full disclosure, that I’m not a health care

practitioner of any kind … but this is just what has worked for me,

really well in the past.

Good luck!!!

Thank you so much, Lorraine!!!!  You made me feel better.  I am going to check

out those items you mentioned as I believe this is something my body can

naturally fight off at this point.  I know I haven't taken care of myself well

lately and this is a result of it.  Time for me to take some " me time " !

I really appreciate your reply.  :)

Hi Denise-

I went through a time when I first started teaching when I had constant UTIs for

a few months. I did the antibiotic thing, which worked, but then they would come

back. So, eventually, I did some research and worked out a system that has

worked for me for 15 or so years, without fail. I've never needed a course of

antibiotics since, and have recommended this to others, and it has worked for

them, too.

-I take massive doses of vitamin c, via ester c powder, usually. I'm talking

5,000-10,000mg a day. Excess vitamin c just gets expelled, so I guess that might

help- it's leaving your body via your urinary tract.

-I also take cranberry pills, straight up cranberry extracts. I take as many as

I think I might need- 6-10 a day is not uncommon. NOT juice- it has sugar in it

(If it's the kind that tastes good, haha) which is thought to cause the bacteria

to grow more quickly. I also try to lay extra low on sugar during a UTI for this

reason.

-I drink copious amounts of water.

- If I'm feeling extra bad, and/or have it on hand, I also take grapeseed

extract for its natural anti-bacterial properties.

I'm figuring by now you must have thought about what is causing the infections

in the first place. Some people think it's yeast overgrowth (thus the no sugar).

For me personally, it's not drinking enough water, 'holding it' (that's why I

got them at the beginning of my teaching career). Some of my friends have told

me that they get them if they don't pee after they have sex, since bacteria can

get into your urinary tract that way.

At any rate, I feel for you. Nothing is more miserable than a UTI. Hope you are

feeling well soon!

From Dr. Weil's webiste: http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/id/ART00699

" Nutrition and Supplements -

Cranberry juice and cranberry extract. Cranberries contain a substance that

helps prevent bacteria from adhering to the bladder walls. Drink unsweetened

cranberry juice concentrate diluted with water, or take powdered cranberry

extract in capsules. "

In our pharmacy, we see doctors recommend taking the probiotics during the use

of antibiotics. The probiotics help to keep the good bacteria alive while the

antibiotics are killing off bad and good bacteria. Not using them won't cause

the infection to reoccur, they just speed up the time of getting your body back

to it's normal operating state.

If you can't tolerate drinking the cranberry juice in large amounts, then the

powdered cranberry extract, such as the AZO cranberry sold at pharmacies (I've

seen it on the shelf at walgreens) is the easier way to go.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery :)

Thank you, Jenni!  I really appreciate your thoughts on this.  I am going to

the health store tomorrow and am going to get a good vitamin C, grapeseed

extract and Cranberry Pills.  I drink the cranberry concentrate with no sugar

added.  It tastes fine but I think I'd rather take the pills.  I went through

a super busy period of a few days where I held my pee for hours even when it was

hurting me so bad I still held it (STUPID ME!) and I wasn't drinking much

liquids either.  I think besides the UTI, I may have done some damage to my

bladder and just need to give it time to heal.

I've heard that teachers have a higher rate of UTI's from not being able to use

the restroom when they need to.  It's so encouraging to hear that you concurred

this without further antibiotics.  I am determined to do the same.  Thanks for

your advice!!!
