Hi

Although ie been lurking on this group for a while this is the first time ive

posted :) Im a very new vegan; i was an ovo-lacto vegetarian for three years but

succumbed to parental pressure and began eating meat again. I got married last

August and gave birth to an amazing little boy in February, and after having

contemplated veganism for a long long time, decided to take the step and

finally be a vegan just a few weeks ago, and im feeling great about that :) My

question tho, regards beans and breastfeeding :) I loooooooove any form of bean,

especially in dips with crackers or raw veggies. But i have so far been avoiding

eating lots of beans as im afraid it will give my son bad gas since im

breastfeeding. Is this true? Id love to know what your take is on the subject

and maybe what other mums' experiences were in this regard.

Thanks in advance!

Hey Claire!

Congrats on your son! We just had our second, a little girl, on the 19th of

January. Tons of fun!!! I am breastfeeding as well. Did with my first, too.

In my experience, I have never had a problem with gas and beans except in the

beginning, when they were a newborn. I eat beans often and don't seem to have a

problem anymore. This could be just my body or my baby's, not sure. The way I

look at it is, I need the nutrients...and so does my baby. But if you try the

beans, and you notice a reaction, I guess go easy on them. That's what I

would do. It just seems in talking with my friends who have babies, it's seems

it's different for everyone.

Hope this helps!

Hello Claire, everyone!

I'm new on this list, hello!

I live in Brazil, I'm vegetarian (not vegan, yet at least), I have a 4y

daughter and I'm pregnant of my second baby (due for june).

About beans, I believe you'll have to test and see if you baby reacts with

gas, but I know there are some kinds of beans that lessen that problem.

My pediatrician here used to recommend me a very tiny bean, but I don't know

its name in English neither if you can find it in the US, in Portuguese we

call it " Azouki " , I believe its origin should be Japanese. Do you have it

there? As far as I know, it's the kind of beans that produces less gas and

is more easily digestible, recommended for small children.

Hope to have helped!

I've never noticed a problem with gas and beans either. A friend warned me

off cabbage for the same reason but I didn't stop eating it, and I don't

think that's given my baby wind either

Hi Claire,

I've never noticed a difference with breast feeding/gas whether I ate beans or

not. Four kids here, all breast fed for varying amounts of time, up to two

years old. I also think the idea of babies getting gas is a bit overblown

(sometimes they just get crabby, need to blow off extra energy, whatever.)...so

if you eat beans and baby seems crabby later, I wouldn't necessarily see it as a

cause/effect relationship unless you observe this multiple times- and/or hear

the, um, off-gassing with your own ears. I know others will disagree with me on

this- or perhaps my babies are just crabby and not gaseous- and that's fine! I

just think we mom types like to have something to blame for a case of the

fussies...and what else is there, really, besides gas. Anyway, I would proceed

with your bean habit unless directed otherwise by your 'tiny tyrant', as I like

to call them. Congratulations!

j.

I had a son who was very sensitive to any dairy products that I ate. (not

vegan at the time). When I cut them out he was fine. Never liked milk even as a

child or teenager.

You could try some beans and watch for any reaction. If no problem then try

increasing the beans. Just go easy and be aware.

Good luck!

Three vegan bf kids (eldest is ten). I am still nursing the youngest at 2.5

years so I've been nursing over yen years w/o a break. Sometimes my kids passed

gas, but it was never painful and none of them were fussy babes. I eat a vegan

whole foods diet which includes lots of beans, broccoli, garlic, and spicy foods

and it was never a problem.

Enjoy your babe and the special bfing bonding moments!!!

Hello,

Congratulations on your son! I am breastfeeding my third boy. I never had any

trouble with gas for any of the three. My third was a little gassy in the

beginning but he outgrew it. I think the gassiness of a baby is dependent on a

lot of things including an immature system.

Different foods affect different people in different ways. If the beans seem to

be bothering him then stop eating them for awhile and see if it goes away then

slowly add them back in. You won't know until you try!!

Good luck!

I would get reprimanded for cabbage and broccoli! I hated when my MIL would

constantly tell me " oh, don't eat that because of gas! " It got annoying! I

still ate it and never had a problem with cabbage or broccoli either, for me, so

I ate it anyways, and sure enough, baby was fine, too.

We talked specifically about this at our La leche league meet and NO

beans, cabbage etc do not affect your babe through breastmilk. Cow's

milk protein can cross this barrier and in my opinion is the cause of

colic. Alot of la leche league material refer to the challenges cow's

milk/most formula derived from it can cause discomfort for babies. :)

Hi Claire,

Congratulations on your new baby. I also lurk here mostly but wanted to jump in

on this question. I nursed my son for 2 years (he just had his 2nd birthday a

week ago) and never had any issues with gas no matter what I ate. I think the

most important thing to remember is that every mom and baby are different and if

you think something you're eating is bothering your baby, try cutting back and

see if it helps. I know your intuition will tell you this but I just wanted to

reinforce that you are the one who truly knows what is best for your baby! Good

luck with everything!
