Guest guest
My favorite dish is Quinoa pasta (spaghetti) with the spaghetti sauce I used to eat.? I find that making gluten free pasta taste good is all about the sauce you put on!? The quinoa pasta in my experience has a much more traditional texture than corn or rice pasta... both of which I find mushy and gross.? Then you could toast millet bread and put olive oil, garlic and parsley on it to make gluten free garlic bread and do a big mixed green salad on the side!? Yum! Alina Joy Penelope Schneider <tuba.gypsie Mon, 8 Dec 2008 4:35 pm filling food? Hey all! So I'm allergic to most food on earth (Milk, Eggs, Wheat, Gluten, Fish/Shellfish, Honey, Gelatin, Pears, and Oats) and I don't eat meat. Lately I'm constantly eating, but constantly hungry. What are some filling foods I can eat that will actually fill me up, and preferably that I can get at my local grocery store? I'm also curious about which foods are high in Iron and Protein, because I have a low iron level. Thanks! Pennie
Guest guest
I think the key to gluten-free pasta is to cook it half as long as the package says and then start checking it by taste every minute until it's done. Then, as soon as it is done, wash it with cold water to stop the cooking entirely. The gluten-free pasta packaging tends to suggest cooking times that are wayyyyyy too long. Guest guest
I'd recommend beans, avocado, and potato as more filling foods. Increase your intake of leafy greens to boost iron and help reduce cravings. Green smoothies are great, they also include vitamin c necessary to help with iron absorption. Can I also suggest looking at how much fruit you are eating? I have a fructose intolerance, and if I eat fruits that are too high in fructose (particularly apples, pears, grapes) then I am hungry all the time, eating every hour but constantly starving and getting dizzy and shaky, etc. While glucose can be immediately used by the body, fructose needs to be processed by the liver, and it needs glucose for metabolism and will pull it out of your blood if necessary. If I stick to low-fructose foods - stone fruit, citrus, berries, etc. - then I am fine. I also try to have them with greens and/or nuts when possible, to avoid blood sugar spikes/drops. Hope something in here helps. Guest guest
The best thing I have found to get those iron levels up are lentils, (brown or red) and split peas (yellow or green). Excellent source of iron and protein and very filling. When I first started, I used only red lentils or green split peas. I really prefer the taste of red lentils over brown, but as soon as I got accustomed, I enjoyed brown too. Brown rice is also very good, too. Guest guest
Man, your diet sounds like ours...it's tough isn't it sometimes. We do eat meat so that makes it a bit easier. Can you tolerate corn...on of our favorites is popcorn...with coconut oil! Yummy...you can add whatever other goodies you can tolerate...but that's a fav around here.. Could the reason you are constantly hungry, be that you have a systemic candida infection....that sure causes that effect at my house. I have that issue....and when it gets bad I could eat the fridge!!! And whatever is in it!! That might be some of the reason...or are you craving somethings in particular....sometimes we are low on vitamins or minerals and we crave foods to try and fill in for the need. hth Ronni > > Hey all! > > So I'm allergic to most food on earth (Milk, Eggs, Wheat, Gluten, Fish/Shellfish, Honey, Gelatin, Pears, and Oats) and I don't eat meat. Guest guest
Hi Pennie, I agree with the others about beans being a good source. Laurel's Kitchen (an old favorite cookbook of mine) suggests cooking them in a cast iron pot to get the most iron from them when you eat them. Kind of weirds me out, but it works... Guest guest
Beans and rice would be my recommendation. Guest guest
I would recommend you talk to your doctor and get some testing done to see how well your body is absorbing nutrients. You can try taking digestive enzymes. I take pills called Juice for Life, which has enzymes and probiotics. If your not feeling satisfied after eating, your could be suffering from a malabsorption problem. My doctor was also talking to me about a rare form of celiac in which even on the diet, certain conditions, like anemia, do not improve. It's rare, but it happens! I take 3 times the daily recommended dose of iron, plus I eat lots of spinach witch is high in iron, and I am still extremely anemic. I also have malabsorption because of chronic pancreatitis, and my creatine levels are extremely low as well. I could shove all the food in the house into me and I'll still be hungry, and sick too! I tend to feel the hunger throughout my body, in my muscles. Lots of weakness and fatigue. It feels as if my body is screaming for nourishment even though my stomach is full or can't handle any food. If you can relate to that, then you better go to your doctor and get some test done. If they prescribe digestive enzymes, your not going to want the prescription ones! They contain pig byproducts, and since you have a problem with gelatin, you will get sick from them! I learned the hard way! Good luck! Guest guest
Hi Pennie, You've come to the right place. You won't find any recipes here that contain milk, eggs, wheat, gluten, fish/shellfish or gelatin. There are some recipes that contain honey but that can very easily be substituted with other syrups such as agave nectar. There are also some recipes that have certified GF oats as an ingredient, but plenty more that don't. Foods that will actually fill you up would be beans lentils, wholegrains, nuts and veggies. Low GI foods digest more slowly and will leave you feeling fuller for longer. Avoid starchy (a lot of commercial GF foods are just pure starch) and over processed food. You find a list of high and low GI foods here: http://www.the-gi-diet.org/lowgifoods/ For a good list of iron (along with other nutrients) in foods try this site: http://www.vnv.org.au/site//index.php?option=com_content & task=view & id=55 & Itemid=\ 66#Iron The same site also has a complete page on iron and vegetarian diets. It suggests foods that should be eaten together to enhance absorption (eg. vitamin C containing foods) and those should be avoided being eaten together. http://www.vnv.org.au/site/index.php?option=com_content & task=view & id=189 & Itemid=\ 67 And another page on protein: http://www.vnv.org.au/site/index.php?option=com_content & task=view & id=191 & Itemid=\ 67 In general the highest sources of protein are beans (including soy products such as tofu tempeh and TVP), nuts, seeds, lentils, and some grains such as quinoa. Be sure to eat foods from a range of sources. Take some time to browse through the recipe files here and you will find plenty of yummy things you can eat. If you ever have any questions, just ask. There a many knowledgeable members here willing to help. Hope that helps, Kim, in Australia , Penelope Schneider <tuba.gypsie wrote: > > Hey all! > > So I'm allergic to most food on earth (Milk, Eggs, Wheat, Gluten, Fish/Shellfish, Honey, Gelatin, Pears, and Oats) and I don't eat meat.
