Guest guest
I was on Peta looking at bumper stickers tonight and saw one for not disecting frogs in school. I was reminded of my own experience. I've always said I've been a vegetarian want to be for a few weeks. The reality is that I guess I have been a whole lot longer. In High School when we had to disect frogs I stayed home for 3 days for the start to finish of disecting frogs saying I was sick. I told my mom and she didn't care and let me stay home. Tonight my mom told me to just go eat a piece of meat if your not getting protein and talk to your doctor about your new diet. I told her I didn't ask him when all I ate was a cheeseburger and fries and no veg. why ask now! Tonight my husband told his mom I was a vegan (and explained it to her). Mind you, me and my mother in law aren't great friends. She said she could see it in me since I never liked meat before anyway. Just trying to find my way, MichelleS

Guest guest
Ha ha ha!? When I was in high school, I deliberately petitioned the school to excuse me from grade 10 science altogether because of the dissecting issue.? They actually allowed it, but put me in grade 11 Chemistry instead.? I really didn't have the background for it, and it was too hard for me, but I passed, and then never took science again.? It's too bad, because our children CAN learn anatomy without dissecting.? There are great anatomical teaching tools out there. About the doctor... when my son was diagnosed gluten free, we went to a pediatric gastrointerologist.? Now wouldn't you think that a doctor with that much education would know more about health and nutrition than a mom with no background in this area?? When the doctor heard we are vegan she was sure that was the problem the baby... why he was not gaining weight.? She asked, " What do you give him for protein? " ? I told her beans and nuts.? She told me you can't give a baby nuts.? I explained that I was grinding them up into a very fine powder or making nutmilk and she said, " Well, he might be allergic to it. " ? Ok.? Then I asked, " So what about beans? " ? She actually told me, " There is no protein in beans. " ? Ahh.... I think she missed the day they taught nutrition 101 in medical school.? I looked into it later and doctors really spend very little time studying nutrition.? Doctors know about Disease and Drugs.? They generally aren't taught much about vitamins and protein and stuff.? Our family doctor (who is significantly more knowledgeable in this area than the specialist) even acknowledges this weakness and will refer patients to a dietician or a nutritionist.? But you know, when a patient goes to the doctor with heat disease or high cholesteral, the first thing the doctor says is " cut out red meat. " ? There's a really good book about this called " Proof Positive " by Neil Nedley.? He is a doctor who specializes in a plant-based diet.? It is a textbook, but a very readable textbook.? The studies he cites are amazing! Like you, I also have one of those mothers in law who may never be someone I consider a friend.? She actually said one time that my husband is perfect, except for his taste in women.? LOL!? Another time she said the only nice thing she has ever said about me... " She's not stupid... She knows a good man when she sees one. " ? You just have to have a sense of humour!? Alina Joy Michelle <msteen Mon, 12 Jan 2009 8:09 pm Disecting frogs in School? Guest guest
I was lucky enough to have an option at my school when it came to dissecting. I never had to participate in the brutal ritual! I had always been vegetarian because meat made me sick. My grandmother always tried to hide meat in my food thinking I'd never know the difference. She always wore it and never learned her lesson! Some people will judge you and not understand. The worst is when you get " just pick the meat out and you'll never know the difference! " I always cringe when I hear that! Then once I had a woman arguing with me that I eat chicken, eggs and cheese because her niece claims to be a vegetarian and she eats them! *Well thank you so much for informing me of what I eat since you know so well! * Don't get discouraged because other people don't understand! We are all different and we have to choose what we eat and how we live for ourselves. Other people can think and say whatever they want but at the end of the day all that really matters is that you are happy and content with the choices you made for yourself. Only you can determine what makes you happy and only you have the power to create that choice for yourself! Be proud of yourself for making a conscious choice to improve your health. Follow your heart and keep thinking for yourself and you will be happy with the life your create for yourself, no matter what direction you choose to go in! {hug} **On Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 9:09 PM, Michelle <msteen wrote: > I was on Peta looking at bumper stickers tonight and saw one for not > disecting frogs in school. Guest guest
Good story Michelle. I especially liked the part about how you didn't ask permission from your doctor when you were eating junk food, so you're not going to ask him now that you are eating healthy. :-) That was a very excellent response on your part. :-) Deborah I was on Peta looking at bumper stickers tonight and saw one for not disecting frogs in school. Guest guest
That's a good story Alina. I really like people writing about themselves like this, its nice getting to know a little about the people behind the recipes. I'm glad to hear about Dr. Neil Nedley. I looked up his website and he recommends Dr. Neal Barnard's books, the founder of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Very cool! :-) Deborah Ha ha ha!? Guest guest
Alice, in a nutshell, can it be summed up as fear? Deborah Very good point!! Be patient with the people in your life who aren't thrilled that you've started doing things differently... If you like reading, I highly recommend 'Living Amongst Meat Eaters' (can't remember the author sorry) - lots of insights into why omnis tend to react to vegetarians and vegans the way they do. Best wishes alice .
Guest guest
Yes, I suppose so - fear of change - fear that your relationship with them will change, fear that they'll need to consider a change of lifestyle for themselves!
