Guest guest
Hi Sara We take a multivitamin and mineral supplement that provides B12 at 5000 times the recommended daily allowance (UK). It is necessary to have B12 to avoid heart trouble. Research over the last few years show that vegetarians live longest, vegans next longest and then meat-eaters. This appears to be because vegans are a little low in B12 which affects homocysteine levels. Jo - Sara Sunday, October 26, 2003 2:55 PM Vitamins As I've said before, I'm new to the vegan lifestyle. I am a firm beliver in vitamins. I take a multi, 1000mgs of C and calcium (osteoporosis....however you spell it...runs in my family). A vegan friend of mine said that now that I'm vegan it's imperative that I take a B12 supplement. Anyway, what do ya'll take? The few searches I've done have yielded vitamins with 800% of the RDA and I really avoid this since it's not neccesary (my hubby is a pharmacist so he says to avoid them.) Any help would be appreciated.Sara To send an email to -

Guest guest
Hi, Opinion is very divided on supplements. However it is true that B12 is very important for vegans. I do have vitamin C supplements, which is probably the last thing anyone on a good vegan diet needs, but I have Lupus and I have read vitamin C is helpful in lupus. I dont actually like the thought of taking lots of supplements. You can get most vitamins and minerals from a balanced vegan diet no problem. I get B12 from fortified soya milk, fortified breakfast cereal, fortified vegan margarine and " Natex " yeast extract spread, which contains it naturally in large amounts. Also consider iodine. This is not common in the vegan diet. Some people add seaweed products to their diet to ensure an iodine source. , " Sara " <chrisandsara@c...> wrote: > As I've said before, I'm new to the vegan lifestyle. I think can be downloaded from their website. My own understanding of the B12 defeciency was that it led to neurological problems. Has the current thinking changed on this? Was the research you mentioned one study or a review of a number of studies? Single studies can have flaws. Interesting issue though. Guest guest
A B12 deficiency does lead to neurological problems - pernicious anaemia. But the latest research shows that lack of vitamin B12 allows homocysteine levels to rise, and cause heart troubles. It is based on lots of different research. Guest guest
It's my understanding that people need very very small amounts of B- 12... nothing massive. I get mine from nutritional yeast, which is supposed to be a vegan source of B-12. Not sure if it has the cheesy taste that people say it has, but it's okay sprinkled on stuffed eggplant or pasta. Guest guest
my daughter is 35 and also vegetarian, She takes something called supermom. She says it gives her enough energy to take care of 4 kids, her husband, the house and a job. She tells me I should not take it, though, because it is specifically formulated for younger women. Not knowing how old you are, I don't know whether or not to recommend it. At my age I have to be careful, cause malnutrition problems in women my age become permanent. I take More-than-a Multiple with a B Complex chaser. I also highly recomend a pro-biotic regardless of your age. It will improve a lot of skin and hair problems vegetarians are prone to. I need something that will help with energy big time. I feel like I'm dragging butt all day long. I'm going to bed early and getting enough sleep, but still feeling really tired. Some of you were talking about Spirlena and wondered if that would be a good one to take. I do have a vitamin from One A Day for Women, but I have seen that also have an Energy vitamin. Please any suggestions would be very helpful at this moment. Thank you!! Mindy We won't tell. Get more on shows you hate to love (and love to hate): TV's Guilty Pleasures list. Guest guest
Hi Mindy, I take Green Source, from Puritan Pride (http://www.puritan.com). I like them because they have natural supplements (spirulina, oat bran, wheat grass, barley juice concentrate, chlorella, pectin, chylorophyllin, echinacea, milk thistle, cayenne pepper, ginger, ginkgo, goldenseal, and three lactobacillus probiotics all in one tablet). The price is also good. Also take garlic, flaxseed oil, turmeric, cranberry concentrate and lutein, all from Puritan Pride. Easy to purchase online and always have special deals (buy 1 get 1 free, buy 2 get 2 free, buy 2 get 3 free). No, I'm not an employee of Puritan Pride!!! :>) Bryan , " Mindy-n-Shawn " <hunnybunns4233 wrote: > > Ok, I know that awhile back this topic was talked about, but I have a > question or two. Guest guest
I have been looking into daily multi's myself. Most contain gelatin or fish product of some sort. Be sure to read all the ingredients. I'll let you know when I find some. It's seems like we'll have to go to a health food store and buy ones specifically for vegetarians and of course pay an arm and a leg for them. All of the regular brands seem to have at least one ingredient we avoid. I'm going to check Walgreens and I'll let you know what I find. Good luck! Guest guest
I'd be curious to know what's in " Super Mom? " I'm not a mom but a " nontraditional student " trying to do nursing school and could always use more pep! That said, as far as general vitamins, I like Source of Life-Nature's Plus Vitamins. They are vegan and have some spirulina in some of the blends. Do read labels thought because some products you will have to take more than 1 pill to get eh full % of vitamins and minerals. , Katie M <cozycate wrote: > > my daughter is 35 and also vegetarian, She takes something called supermom. Guest guest
One of my favorite topics that always prompts me to recommend the whole-food, cultured products from New Chapter: http://www.new-chapter.com The founder, Paul Schulick, is the preeminent expert on ginger and its healing properties, which he documents meticulously in his book Ginger: Common Spice And Wonder Drug. http://snipurl.com/1c8vv (Amazon link) The company started out specializing in ginger concotions, and it still plays a starring role in many of their products. Later, as more were added, they consulted with the main man in the field of mushrooms, Paul Stamets who owns his own company selling grow kits etc. http://www.fungi.com So, there is a lot of expertise and research behind their products, and I am a big fan of their philosophy of whole, cultured food-based vitamins. You won't find any preformed vitamin A in their multi-vitamins (and no iron in the men's). -Erin Please read the story of new vegan cookbook: http://www.zenpawn.com/vegblog/2007/06/03/vegan-done-light

Guest guest
I use to take vitamins, yesterday I cleaned out my cabinets in my bathroom, and I found a bottle of vitamins, I am so busy with my kids and stuff I just forget, but I have always read that if you are eating a healthy diet you don't need vitamins.
